Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Forbidden Night
I was supposed to leave at 10 PM. Everyone had already left after the end-of-year company party. The music, the laughter, the cheap champagne - all of it was over. The 50th floor was completely dark except for one office. His office.
Mr. Kaiden Rice's office.
I had been his secretary for six months, and I still felt nervous every time I walked near his door. He was 32, a self-made billionaire, 6'4 with a body built like an athlete, cold grey eyes that could freeze anyone, and a reputation for destroying anyone who crossed him. He never smiled. He never dated. He just worked and ruled his empire like a king.
And I was just Layla, 24, a poor girl from the wrong side of town trying to pay her mother's medical bills and her tiny apartment rent. I wore cheap office dresses from the thrift store, I took the bus, and I was invisible to him. Or so I thought.
But tonight, I forgot the payroll files on his desk. If I didn't get them tonight, accounting would fire me tomorrow. So I had to go back.
The rain was hammering the glass windows of the skyscraper so hard that I couldn't see the city lights anymore. It was a full storm. My cheap shoes clicked loudly on the empty marble floor as I walked toward his office, my heart beating faster with every step.
The light was on. I could see his shadow through the frosted glass.
I knocked softly. No answer. I knocked again, louder.
"Mr. Rice? Are you there?"
Nothing.
I pushed the door open just an inch. "Sir?"
The smell hit me immediately. Expensive whiskey, rain, and something wild, like forest after a storm. His office was huge, all black and grey and glass, but it was a mess. Papers on the floor, a crystal glass shattered near the window, his expensive tie thrown on the couch.
And there he was, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window with his back to me. His white shirt was completely torn open, his back muscles tense and flexing with every heavy, angry breath. His hands were clenched into fists.
"Mr. Kaiden?" My voice was barely a whisper.
He turned around slowly. And the moment he turned, my entire world stopped.
His eyes. His eyes were not grey anymore. They were glowing golden, bright like a wolf's eyes in the dark, burning with something I couldn't understand. His hair was messy, as if he had been pulling it. His jaw was tight, his lips parted, his whole body looked like he was in pain, fighting a battle inside himself.
"Layla." He said my name, but his voice was different. Deeper, hoarser, like a growl. "What are you doing here? I told everyone to leave. I told security to clear the building."
"I forgot the payroll files, sir. I just need them for tomorrow morning. I'll be one minute, I promise."
He didn't move. He just stared at me, his golden eyes traveling slowly over my body, over my wet hair, my simple black dress that was now sticking to my body from the rain I ran through, my bare legs, my shaking hands.
"The storm is too strong. The roads are closed. The elevators are locked. You're stuck here now." He took one step toward me. Then another. His walk was slow, powerful, predatory, like a wolf circling its prey. "You shouldn't have come back, little secretary."
My back hit the door. I was trapped.
"I... I will wait in the lobby then..."
"No." He was right in front of me now. So close I could feel the heat coming off his body. He smelled incredible, even with the whiskey. He smelled like power and danger. He put one big hand on the door above my head, caging me in. "You look so scared. Are you afraid of me, Layla?"
My heart was beating so loud I was sure he could hear it.
"Yes... No... I don't know..."
"You should be." His free hand suddenly came up and gently, but possessively, wrapped around my waist, pulling me against his hard chest. His thumb brushed over my pulse on my neck. "Do you know how long I've been watching you?"
I couldn't breathe.
"For six months, you've been walking around my office in those little thrift store dresses, biting your little lip when you're nervous, pretending you don't see me looking at you. Do you think I'm blind? Do you think I don't notice how beautiful you are when you think no one is watching?"
"Sir, please, you're drunk..."
"I'm not drunk, Layla. I'm the opposite. I've never been more clear in my life." His forehead almost touched mine, his golden eyes looking deep into mine. "I am a man who gets everything he wants. And for the past six months, I've wanted one thing that I couldn't have. You."
I should have pushed him away. I should have slapped him. I should have screamed for security. But my body betrayed me completely. A strange, hot shiver ran through my whole body from his touch. My knees felt weak. No man had ever looked at me like this, like I was the only thing in the world, like he wanted to devour me.
"When you're on my desk, you don't call me Sir." He whispered, his lips now just a breath away from mine. "You call me Kaiden. And when you beg later... you will call me yours. Do you understand?"
I nodded without thinking. "Yes... Kaiden..."
That one word was his breaking point.
His mouth crashed onto mine, not gently, but with a savage, starving hunger, like a man who had been holding back for too long. He lifted me easily, as if I weighed nothing, and sat me on his cold, expensive mahogany desk. Papers and files fell to the floor. His hands were in my hair, on my waist, pulling me closer, claiming every inch.
"You smell so sweet," he growled against my neck, inhaling me deeply, his golden eyes closed for a second. "So sweet and so innocent. And you have no idea what you do to me."
I moaned softly, and that sound drove him insane.
That night, the storm outside was nothing compared to the storm he unleashed inside his office. He was possessive, demanding, whispering dark promises in my ear, telling me I was his now, that I would never work for anyone else, that I would never leave this building without him.
It was my first time. And he knew it. And instead of stopping, he became even more possessive, even more gentle in his own savage way.
It was terrifying. And it was the most beautiful thing I had ever felt.
That was my first night. And the last night I would ever be just a normal, invisible, poor secretary.
I woke up in the morning alone, sunlight streaming into a huge bedroom I had never seen before. It was his penthouse. It smelled entirely like him. I was on his huge king-size bed, covered in his expensive black sheets, my body aching in a sweet, unfamiliar way. My cheap dress was neatly folded on a chair, clean and dry.
And on the pillow next to me, there was a small black card with his strong, powerful handwriting:
"Game over, little one. You're mine now. Don't come to the office tomorrow. My driver will pick you up at 7 PM. We need to talk about your new position... permanently. - K"
I ran home that morning, confused, ashamed, and feeling something in my chest I had never felt before.
And exactly 30 days later, at 6 AM in my tiny, cold bathroom, I was staring down at a white plastic pregnancy test with two bright pink lines, my hands shaking so hard I dropped it into the sink.
Positive.
I was pregnant. With the savage billionaire's baby. The billionaire who I just found out... might not even be human.
