Chapter 1
THE HEADLESS COWBOY
Prologue — The Rider in the Dust
They say that when the moon is high over Blackwater County, you can hear a horse running across the desert.
Not walking.
Not trotting.
Running.
Four iron-shod hooves pounding against the hard earth as though the devil himself were chasing them.
But there is no rider.
At least, not one with a head.
The old-timers in the town of Dustfall call him The Headless Cowboy.
Nobody knows his real name anymore.
Some say he was an outlaw.
Others swear he was a lawman.
A few claim he was neither.
They say he was a man who loved a woman he could never have—and that when she died, something inside him broke.
But every version of the story ends the same way.
A gunshot.
A rope.
A missing head.
And a rider who never stopped looking for it.
For nearly forty years, the people of Dustfall stayed away from the old trail beyond Raven Ridge.
Until one September night in 1891, a stranger rode into town carrying a silver revolver and a letter addressed to a dead man.
His name was Elias Crowe.
And he had come to find the Headless Cowboy.

Chapter One
Dustfall
The town of Dustfall had three rules.
Don't steal from the sheriff.
Don't ask questions about the old cemetery.
And never ride north after sundown.
Elias Crowe broke all three before breakfast.
He arrived just after sunrise with dust covering his black coat and a battered leather hat pulled low over his eyes.
His horse, a tired chestnut gelding named Marlow, stopped in front of the Dustfall Saloon.
Elias climbed down.
The entire street seemed to stop breathing.
Men sitting on the porch went quiet.
A woman sweeping outside the general store stopped sweeping.
Even the town's stray dog looked at Elias, growled once, and disappeared beneath a wagon.
Elias glanced around.
"Friendly place."
Nobody answered.
He tied Marlow to the hitching post and walked into the saloon.
The bartender looked up.
"Whiskey?"
"Coffee."
The bartender raised an eyebrow.
"You're either brave or stupid."
"Usually both."
That earned a few nervous chuckles from the room.
Elias sat at the bar.
The bartender poured him coffee.
Elias reached inside his coat and placed a folded letter on the counter.
"I need to find a man."
The bartender glanced at the letter.
"What's his name?"
"Samuel Crowe."
The room went silent.
The bartender's face changed.
"Samuel Crowe?"
"Yes."
"He's dead."
"I know."
The bartender slowly pushed the letter back toward him.
"Then you're looking for the wrong man."
Elias unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was old.
Very old.
The ink had faded brown around the edges.
But the message was clear.
ELIAS,
IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THEN I AM DEAD.
THERE IS SOMETHING I SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU YEARS AGO.
THE RIDER IS NOT WHAT THEY SAY.
HE DID NOT DIE THAT NIGHT.
AND HE IS STILL LOOKING FOR HER.
GO TO RAVEN RIDGE.
FIND THE HEADLESS COWBOY.
AND WHATEVER YOU DO...
DO NOT LET HIM FIND YOU FIRST.
Elias folded the letter.
The bartender stared at him.
"Where'd you get that?"
"My uncle."
"Samuel was your uncle?"
Elias nodded.
The bartender swallowed.
"You should leave."
"Why?"
"Because Samuel spent the last twenty years telling anyone who'd listen that the dead man was coming back."
Elias took another sip of coffee.
"Maybe he was right."
A chair scraped against the wooden floor.
An old cowboy sitting alone in the corner stood up.
He wore a gray hat and carried a rifle.
"You want to know about the rider?"
Elias turned.
"Yes."
The old man walked closer.
His name was Silas Boone.
Elias would learn that later.
For now, Silas leaned across the bar.
"Then listen carefully."
His voice dropped to a whisper.
"The Headless Cowboy only rides when someone is about to die."
Elias stared at him.
Silas continued.
"And last night..."
He pointed toward the window.
"I heard hooves."
Elias slowly looked outside.
Across the street, Marlow suddenly jerked against his reins.
The horse whinnied.
Then came the sound.
Clop.
Clop.
Clop.
Everyone in the saloon froze.
The sound was coming from somewhere beyond town.
Then it stopped.
Elias stood.
"Where?"
Silas shook his head.
"Don't."
Elias grabbed his hat.
"Where?"
The old cowboy pointed north.
"Raven Ridge."
Elias walked outside.
Marlow was trembling.
And carved into the dusty ground beneath the horse's hooves was a single word.
RUN.
Elias stared at it.
Then he heard something behind him.
A faint metallic sound.
Like a revolver being cocked.
He turned.
Nobody was there.
Only the empty street.
And far beyond the town...
A black horse stood on the ridge.
Its rider wore a long coat.
A wide-brimmed hat.
And where his head should have been...
There was nothing.
The horse reared.
The rider raised one hand.
And Elias heard a voice carried across the desert wind.
"Crowe..."
Elias froze.
The voice came again.
"You have something that belongs to me."
Then the rider vanished.
Not rode away.
Not disappeared behind the ridge.
One moment he was there.
The next...
Nothing.
Elias slowly reached inside his coat.
His fingers touched the old letter.
For the first time since arriving in Dustfall, he wondered whether coming here had been a mistake.
Then he noticed something written on the back of the letter.
Something he hadn't seen before.
Three words.
SHE IS ALIVE.
