lessons i didn’t ask for

Kayeleigh pov:

"Kay, hurry up," said my best friend Sy of six-seven years. She was forcing me to go to the skate park with her and her friends.

It was a pretty cool day, so I threw on some jorts, a tank top, and my Adidas. I've never been skating before and honestly wasn't interested, but she literally pulled me out of bed.

— moments later —

I'm sitting there watching everyone skate, bored out of my mind, when I feel a finger tap me on the side. I slowly turn because... who are you?

"Sorry, but you look like you could use some fun. Come skate with me," said the mysterious 6'5 dreadhead.

"I don't know how, and you're a whole stranger, boo. I don't think so," I replied, looking at her sideways.

"My apologies. The name's Ray, and no worries—I'll teach you," she said.

"Kayleigh. And I guess I'll take you up on the offer. There's not much to do anyway."

"Great. Now come on so we can start with the basics—balancing first."

She let me hop on her skateboard and held my waist for support. It felt nice. Safe.

I'm not easy though, I swear.

When she said the basics, she was lying. I seriously couldn't keep my balance without her holding me if my life depended on it.

Every time I tried on my own, I fell. It was okay or whatever... until I fell so hard I could barely get back up.

"I'm done. Cut the show."

"You were almost—well, kinda there," she said, reaching for my hand to help me up.

"Now why are we lying? We can do this another time. I'm getting hungry," I replied, dusting my butt off.

"I can take you to this really good place I know. It's around here somewhere."

"Oh, you're getting comfortable," I said, raising an eyebrow.

"That's only if you allow me to," she mocked, lifting her eyebrow too.

"I don't mind, actually. It better be as good as you're preaching," I said, texting my friend that I left with someone so she wouldn't worry.

"It is. I promise," Ray said, grabbing her stuff and walking to her car.

"Don't make promises you can't keep," I said, holding back a smile.

On the ride there, we started singing together. She has such a nice voice that I stopped just to listen. It was a nice moment but don't get it twisted, we're still strangers.

I know her, but I don't KNOW dada

.

As she pulled in, I observed the scenery. The place was kind of secluded, but the parking lot was full.

She walked me inside, and it felt lively and nurturing. We sat in a booth along the side—the corner was too suffocating, and the center was too out there.

While waiting for our food, we talked. About our backgrounds, who we see ourselves becoming, and our hobbies. She told me about her love for cooking, and I told her how much I admire painting and doing anything creative.

I really enjoyed talking to her. She was easy to talk to, nothing felt forced. She seemed genuinely intrigued every time I spoke. Now that's my type of lil shyt.

When the bill came, I offered my card just to be nice, hoping she'd decline.

She did—thankfully.

Outside, I asked for a ride home. My friend was probably still at the park, and I wasn't in the mood for all those people anymore.

"I really enjoyed my time with you. You made it less boring, and thanks for not kidnapping me" I said as we pulled up near my place.

"Anytime. We can definitely do something like this again."

"Not no skating. I can't take that right now, boo," I said with an uncertain face and a hint of humor in my tone knowing i wasn't joking one bit.

"Nah, something chill. I'm already planning."

"Alright, put your number in," I said, handing her my phone.

"Thank you for this experience. Let me know when you get home, please," I added as I stepped out.

"Of course, pretty. Thank you for allowing me in," she said, smiling.

She waited until I got inside. Then waited a little longer before pulling off.

Yeah... she wants me.
