Chapter 1 - The Feelings
I woke up with a strange feeling in my chest.
For a few seconds, I didn't move.
I stared at the ceiling, trying to hold on to the dream that had just slipped away from me. It was strange how dreams worked. Sometimes you woke up remembering every tiny detail—the color of someone's shirt, the sound of their voice, the exact place you had been.
Other times, everything disappeared within seconds.
But this one was different.
I couldn't remember everything.
I couldn't even remember where we were.
Yet I remembered him.
And I remembered the feeling.
The feeling that something was coming.
Something I couldn't stop.
Something that would change everything.
I closed my eyes again, hoping the dream would return.
Instead, I saw flashes.
A boy standing in front of me.
His hand in mine.
His smile.
An airport.
A suitcase.
My own voice saying something I couldn't quite hear.
And then—
Darkness.
I opened my eyes again.
My heart was beating faster.
"Why do I feel like something is going to happen?"
I whispered the words to myself.
I laughed quietly, trying to convince myself that it was nothing.
Just a dream.
Just my imagination.
I got out of bed and walked toward the window.
Outside, everything looked normal.
People were going to work. Cars moved along the road. Birds flew between the rooftops. Somewhere in the distance, I could hear someone laughing.
The world was perfectly fine.
So why did it feel like mine was about to fall apart?
I pushed the thought away.
That was when my phone vibrated.
Adrian.
Just seeing his name made me smile.
I opened the message.
Good morning, sleepyhead.
I smiled at the screen.
Good morning. You woke me up.
His reply came almost immediately.
Then I deserve a thank-you.
I rolled my eyes.
For what?
For being the first person you thought about when you woke up.
I stared at the message for a moment.
He knew me too well.
I typed:
Don't flatter yourself.
Three dots appeared.
Too late.
I laughed.
That was Adrian.
He could make me smile even when I didn't feel like smiling.
We had been together long enough to know each other's moods without asking. He knew when I was pretending to be okay. I knew when his "I'm fine" actually meant the opposite.
Our relationship wasn't perfect.
But it was ours.
And somehow, with him, everything felt easy.
There was just one problem.
Our families.
Neither of them had ever openly told us that they didn't want us together.
At least, not directly.
Instead, there were little things.
Questions.
Warnings.
Awkward silences whenever his name was mentioned.
My mother suddenly finding reasons for me not to visit him.
His family doing the same to him.
Whenever we asked, everyone insisted that everything was fine.
So we believed them.
Or maybe we simply wanted to.
That morning, Adrian called me.
I answered immediately.
"You're finally awake," he said.
"I've been awake for five minutes."
"That's still late."
"It's not."
"It is."
I smiled.
"You're annoying."
"And you love me."
I went quiet.
He laughed softly.
"See?"
"Maybe."
"Maybe?"
"Don't get too excited."
We talked for almost an hour.
About nothing important.
About what we were going to eat.
About something funny that had happened the day before.
About his plans.
Then his voice changed.
There was a pause.
"I need to tell you something."
My smile disappeared.
"What?"
"I'm going abroad."
I didn't answer.
"For how long?"
"I don't know yet."
I looked down at my hands.
"Oh."
"I'll come back."
I forced a smile even though he couldn't see it.
"I know."
"You sound sad."
"I'm not."
"You are."
"I'm just..."
I stopped.
Just what?
Scared?
I didn't know why.
That strange feeling from my dream suddenly returned.
"Nothing," I whispered.
He was silent for a moment.
Then he said gently,
"I'll call you every day."
I smiled.
"You better."
"I promise."
Neither of us knew how much that promise would matter.
That evening, I saw him one last time before his flight.
We stood together, talking like we always did.
I tried to act normal.
I tried not to think about my dream.
I tried not to think about the strange feeling in my chest.
But when the time came for him to leave, I couldn't pretend anymore.
He picked up his suitcase.
"I'll see you soon."
I nodded.
"Yeah."
He smiled at me.
Then he turned and started walking.
Something inside me screamed.
Don't let him go.
I didn't understand why.
I didn't care whether people were watching.
I ran after him.
"Adrian!"
He turned around.
I reached him, breathless.
For a second, I couldn't speak.
He looked at me with concern.
"What happened?"
I stared at him.
There were a thousand things I wanted to say.
Instead, only three words came out.
"I love you."
His expression softened.
He pulled me into his arms.
"I love you too."
I closed my eyes against his chest.
For that moment, everything was perfect.
I didn't know that sometimes the happiest moments in your life are the ones you remember most clearly after everything changes.
I didn't know that the next time I would think about this moment, I would wish I could go back.
Because when Adrian walked through those airport doors, I had no idea that our lives were about to become a secret.
And I had no idea that someone was already making sure we would never find our way back to each other.
