1: The Deepest Sadness
At twelve o’clock sharp on the day he turned forty, Darren received a massive surprise stored inside a mysterious golden box. What he never imagined that night was that, fifteen years later, in a world full of magic and danger, he would have to defy destiny itself to keep that very same surprise from dying in vain.
But the magic did not wait until midnight to make itself known. It began with an anomaly in the sky.
It was eleven-thirty at night when Darren was walking alone through the cold streets of his neighborhood. At thirty-nine years old, just minutes away from reaching forty, he felt his life was a complete failure. Anguish weighed heavily on his chest with every step: he had been unemployed for two long years, accumulated over a hundred rejected applications, and the crushing debt his brother had left him kept him trapped in his parents’ apartment.
Living at his age under his parents’ roof, depending on his family’s unconditional love without being able to contribute anything, tore his soul apart from the inside. But far beyond the money, what truly shattered his heart was an unbearable emptiness.
From a very young age, Darren’s greatest wish had never been wealth or professional success. His deepest dream had always been to become a father: to have a child of his own to pour all his love into, someone to care for, raise, and protect with his life.
A child... Someone to give all the love I have stored inside here, Darren thought bitterly, staring at the wet pavement. But with these debts, without a job and without a future, bringing a child into my disastrous life would be cruel. I don’t even have anything to offer.
That frustrated desire was a thorn stuck in his soul. In need of answers, he looked up at the night sky. That was when the heavens returned something truly extraordinary.
A streak of golden, almost electric light sliced through the dark clouds with a subtle hum that made the hairs on his arms stand on end. The light did not extinguish in the atmosphere; it plummeted toward the apartment complex where he lived, leaving behind a trail of brilliant sparks that floated in the air before dissipating.
Darren stopped dead in his tracks. His heart rate spiked.
In that moment, staring at the trail of light still glowing in the dark, he closed his eyes and desperately released the wish he had been suffocating in his chest for years.
“If you would just give me one chance... I would ask for a child to love, raise, and protect without flinching before any danger. A being to give all my love to. That is all I ask.”
Upon opening his eyes, he let out a bitter laugh. How absurd. Miracles like that only happened in fiction.
He quickened his pace back, feeling a strange pressure in the air. As he crossed the condominium’s main gate and climbed the stone steps, the building’s silence felt oppressive.
When he reached the second-floor landing, the shadow of a figure froze him in place.
Standing right in front of his apartment door was a stranger. He wore a dark robe with cuts alien to any modern fashion, surrounded by a light golden mist that seemed to emanate from his own body. The deep hood hid his face, but Darren noticed something terrifying: the figure’s feet floated a couple of inches off the ground.
Adrenaline surged through Darren’s veins.
“Hey! Who are you?” Darren shouted, clenching his fists, trying to hide the tremor in his voice. “What are you doing in front of my house? I’m calling the police!”
The hooded figure remained unmoved. His head tilted slightly to the side, and a soft laugh, echoing like a metallic chime, filled the hallway.
“The police of this world cannot intervene in matters of fate, Darren,” the stranger said. His voice did not come from his throat; it echoed directly inside Darren’s mind.
“How do you know my name?” He took a step back, feeling a chill run down his spine.
“Because you have been chosen,” the figure answered, raising a hand covered in a gauntlet etched with glowing runes. “Your heart has been tested by bitterness, unemployment, and debt, but it never lost its capacity to love. You asked under the stars for someone to give all your love to... and the universe has answered your call.”
The figure pointed toward the floor. At his feet rested an elegant, heavy box made of golden metal, covered in intricate engravings that blinked with a faint crimson glow. A palpable aura of heat emanated from the artifact.
“It is now twelve o’clock sharp. Happy twentieth-twentieth birthday, Darren,” the enigma pronounced. “This is the gift you requested. Protect it with your life, because they have already begun searching for it.”
“Wait! What are you talking about?” Darren yelled.
Before he could reach him, the hooded figure made an arcane gesture with his hand. A gust of mystical wind swept through the hallway, blinding Darren for an instant. When he opened his eyes again, the figure had completely disappeared, leaving behind only the scent of ozone in the air.
Darren stood alone, breathing heavily. The golden box remained there, vibrating gently against the cold floor.
Suddenly, the crimson engravings on the box began to flash violently. The metallic casing started shaking violently from within, accompanied by a muffled sound that made Darren’s heart skip a beat.
It was not the sound of a mechanism or a threat. It was the fragile cry of a newborn.
Swallowing hard, with trembling hands and a heart pounding a mile a minute, Darren slowly knelt before the box. He reached his fingers out toward the engraved metal lid, which felt warm to the touch, and lifted it cautiously.
The instant the cover opened, a dazzling stream of pure golden light erupted from inside, flooding the hallway and blinding him for a second.
When his vision adjusted, Darren froze completely.
Inside the box lay neither jewels nor artifacts. Resting upon a bed of embroidered silk was a baby. But what caught his breath was that the creature’s skin did not merely reflect light: it emitted a soft, celestial golden glow of its own that pulsed in a steady rhythm with its heartbeat.
The newborn stopped crying. He raised his tiny arms and locked eyes with Darren—eyes that shone like living stars. In the center of his chest, right over his heart, a small runic mark glowed in the shape of a sword.
Darren gazed at the radiant creature. In a single second, two years of unemployment, the crushing weight of debt, and overwhelming loneliness vanished from his mind. His entire being overflowed with an instinctive, fierce love.
I will called you...
