The shore between

Chapter One: The Shore Between

The sea was wrong.

Mira felt it before she saw the red moon.

The currents beneath her tail had changed. They no longer moved with the familiar rhythm of the tides. They twisted around her like restless fingers, pulling her toward the open water and then shoving her back toward the shore.

Something was waking.

She could feel it in the pressure beneath the wavesโ€”a deep, distant pulse that seemed to echo through her bones.

The elders had a name for nights like this.

The Rift Wake.

A night when the boundary between sea and land became dangerously thin.

A night when things that should have remained asleep sometimes remembered how to wake.

Mira had been warned never to surface during one.

Tonight, she had no choice.

She swam harder.

Pain shot through her tail.

She bit back a cry and looked over her shoulder.

Nothing.

Only black water, broken by flashes of crimson from the moon above.

But she could feel something behind her.

Watching.

Following.

Waiting.

Mira pushed herself forward.

Her silver scales scraped against the rocks beneath the water. Several were cracked, and blood shimmered through the dark around her. Every movement sent another wave of pain through her body.

She didn't know how much farther she could go.

She only knew she couldn't stop.

A sound rolled through the water behind her.

Not a growl.

Not quite a roar.

Something deeper.

Something that seemed to vibrate through the ocean itself.

Mira's heart lurched.

She swam toward the surface.

The moment her head broke through the waves, cold air struck her face.

The shore was close.

So close.

She dragged herself through the surf, using her hands against the rocks as the waves crashed behind her.

Her tail struck the stone.

Pain exploded through her.

Mira cried out and collapsed onto the shore.

For a moment, she could only breathe.

Rain struck her face.

Above her, the moon hung enormous and red.

Then she heard it.

A splash.

Mira froze.

Something was coming out of the water.

She tried to crawl away.

Her injured tail refused to move.

The darkness surged toward her.

A flash of claws.

Mira threw up an arm.

A growl thundered across the shore.

Something collided with the creature behind her.

The impact sent both figures rolling across the wet sand.

Mira stared.

A wolf.

No.

Not a wolf.

A boy.

He stood between her and the thing that had followed her from the sea.

He was drenched from the rain, his clothes torn from whatever fight had just begun. For a brief second, his eyes caught the red moonlight.

Gold.

Bright, unnatural gold.

He shifted his weight.

The creature lunged.

He met it head-on.

Mira couldn't follow the movement properly. Everything happened too quicklyโ€”the flash of claws, the sound of snarling, the spray of rain and seawater.

Then the creature stumbled backward.

It looked toward Mira.

For one terrible second, she saw its eyes.

Cold.

Empty.

Hungry.

Then it vanished into the darkness beyond the trees.

The boy remained still, watching the place where it had disappeared.

Mira waited.

Nothing moved.

He slowly turned toward her.

His expression changed when he saw her.

Confusion first.

Then disbelief.

His gaze dropped to her tail.

To the silver blood spreading across the rocks.

He took one cautious step closer.

โ€œYou're not supposed to be here.โ€

Mira tried to answer.

Her throat burned.

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€

The word barely escaped.

She looked down at herself.

Her tail was cracked badly enough that she could no longer move it properly.

โ€œI'm injured,โ€ she whispered.

The boy's eyes narrowed.

โ€œI can see that.โ€

There was no mockery in his voice.

Only uncertainty.

He looked toward the forest, then back at her.

โ€œDid that thing do this?โ€

Mira didn't answer.

She wasn't sure she could trust him.

He was a werewolf.

She knew that much.

And everything she had ever been taught said that werewolves and merfolk were never supposed to cross paths.

Land and sea.

Two worlds.

Two bloodlines.

Never intertwined.

Yet here he was.

Standing over her.

And he had saved her.

The cold was beginning to spread through her body.

Mira tried to push herself upright.

She failed.

The boy immediately moved forward.

โ€œDon't.โ€

His voice softened.

โ€œYou'll make it worse.โ€

โ€œI have to go.โ€

โ€œWhere?โ€

Mira looked toward the sea.

The waves were already swallowing the blood she had left behind.

โ€œI can't stay here.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she didn't know how to explain what was chasing her.

Because if it had followed her this far, then the shore wasn't safe.

And because the stranger standing in front of her might be the first person from the land to see what she really was.

The boy crouched a short distance away.

He didn't touch her.

Not yet.

โ€œWhat's your name?โ€

Mira stared at him.

โ€œMira.โ€

He repeated it quietly, as though testing the unfamiliar sound.

โ€œMira.โ€

She tried to focus on his face.

โ€œAnd you?โ€

For the first time, something almost like amusement flickered in his expression.

โ€œRowan.โ€

The name barely registered.

Her vision was fading.

The edges of the forest blurred.

The red moon became a smear of crimson light.

โ€œMira.โ€

Rowan's voice sounded farther away now.

She felt herself falling.

His arms caught her before she hit the rocks.

Warmth surrounded her.

It was strange.

She had spent her entire life beneath the sea, surrounded by cold currents and endless blue.

But Rowan's warmth felt different.

Not safe.

Not yet.

Just unfamiliar.

He held her carefully, as though he was afraid she might break.

His scent carried the forest after rainโ€”earth, pine, and something wild she couldn't name.

Mira forced her eyes open.

Rowan was looking down at her.

For the first time, the uncertainty in his expression was gone.

There was something else there now.

Concern.

Maybe even fear.

But she couldn't understand why he would be afraid of her.

Her lips parted.

โ€œWhoโ€ฆโ€

The rest of the question disappeared.

Darkness pulled her under.

And somewhere beyond the shore, beneath the red moon and the restless sea, something answered with a distant growl.
