Summary

In the neon-soaked, gothic spire-city of Oakhaven, human worth is not earned-it is quantified. The System measures all: Mana capacity, combat affinity, and soul potential. To hold high numbers is to rule; to sit at the bottom is to be discarded. When Shinto, second son of the prestigious Shinzen Clan, was born, the holographic interface glitched. It output no grand class, no celestial mana reserves, and no growth multipliers. RANK: NULL. LEVEL 1. MANA: 0 / 0. In a world dependent on System-assisted auto-aim, magical shields, and numerical superiority, Shinto is a true baseline zero-a defective anomaly unable to receive a single stat buff. Cast aside by his family and left with nothing but his grandfather's brutal, old-world discipline, Shinto learns a truth the world forgot: When you rely on a System to guide your blade, you become predictable. No cheats. No hidden overpowered inheritances. Just blood, leverage, and cold, uncompromising pragmatism. While the prodigies of Oakhaven hone their magic, Shinto trains his flesh to break their barriers, out-think their algorithms, and bleed them dry. Because in a matrix governed by absolute rules, the one thing the System cannot calculate... is a boy with nothing left to lose.

Chapter 1: The Zero in the Matrix

The storm over Oakhaven didn't break; it coiled.

Thick, violet-laced clouds churned over the neon-lit spires of the upper district, swallowing the skyline until only the obsidian glass of Heavenly Gate Hospital stood visible against the gloom. Rain pounded the reinforced windows in heavy, rhythmic sheets, casting long, wavering shadows across the high-tech delivery room.

Inside, the silence was suffocating.

Rentaro Shinzen stood rigid near the foot of the medical bed, his knuckles turning white where his hands gripped the edge of his dark, formal coat. Beside him, Grandmother Koto adjusted her high-collared robes, her eyes pinned on the flickering blue light hovering in the center of the room.

In the far corner, almost invisible within the deep shadows of the alcove, eight-year-old Renji stood with his arms crossed, watching with a cold, unblinking glare.

Only Grandfather Daizan remained still. The old warrior leaned slightly on his heavy cane, the jagged scar running down his right cheek catching the sharp blue glare of the interface.

Above the newborn resting in his mother's arms, the holographic System display flickered violently. Digital static tore across the translucent glass-like window, sparks of suppressed mana popping softly in the quiet air.

EVALUATION:

Defective subject. Lacks elemental or physical system integration. Unsuited for combat operations.

"Null...?" Rentaro's voice cracked, the word heavy with a sudden, suffocating disbelief. "That's impossible. A child born of the main Shinzen line cannot have a blank class!"

"Is the System malfunctioning?" Koto stepped forward, her voice sharp, edge-lined with rising panic. "Look at the static on the screen. The interface is glitching."

"It isn't a glitch," Daizan said softly. His voice didn't rise, but it cut through the room like cold iron.

Rentaro snapped his gaze toward his father. "What are you saying? Look at the evaluation! It's giving him a zero in magic potential! He has no skill slots. No mana conductivity. He can't even receive basic stat modifiers from the System!"

"Then you read it correctly," Daizan replied, his dark eyes never leaving the infant. "The System isn't broken, Rentaro. It is simply stating what he is. He was born without the spark."

A terrible stillness fell over the room.

In a world governed by the System, where a person's rank, class, and mana capacity dictated their worth, their social standing, and their right to lead, a [ NULL ] was worse than a commoner. A commoner had an F-Rank or E-Rank class. They could still level up, gain incremental stat points, and use basic skill scrolls.

Shinto had nothing. He was a zero. A blank gear in a clockwork world.

"A defective," Renji's quiet voice echoed from the corner. The eight-year-old prodigy didn't move from the shadows, but his eyes were sharp, calculating, and devoid of warmth as he stared at his new brother. "He carries the Shinzen name, but he holds no power."

"Renji, quiet," Rentaro snapped, though the lack of conviction in his voice was sickeningly obvious. He turned away from the bed, his face pale, already calculating the political ruin this would bring when the clan elders demanded the newborn's evaluation results.

On the bed, the baby didn't cry. Despite the thunder shaking the heavy windowpanes and the violent humming of the holographic error screen above his head, little Shinto simply lay back in his mother's arms, staring up at the ceiling with calm, unreadable dark eyes.

Daizan stepped forward, the heavy thud of his cane echoing against the polished floor. He reached down with a calloused, scarred hand and gently brushed the side of the infant's head.

"No system buffs. No magic. No safety net," Daizan muttered, a low, dangerous murmur meant only for the boy. "The world will give you nothing, little one. So you will have to take everything with your own hands."

SIXTEEN YEARS LATER

The rain in Oakhaven hadn't changed.

High above the neon-drenched lower alleys, inside the private training grounds of the Shinzen estate, the heavy scent of sweat, wet iron, and ozone hung thick in the cold morning air.

THUD.

A loud, dull impact rattled the reinforced wooden pillar at the center of the courtyard.

Sixteen-year-old Shinto Shinzen pulled his fist back, his breath coming in sharp, white puffs in the cold air. His knuckles were wrapped tightly in worn linen tape, stained faint red where the friction had torn through the skin over hours of repetition.

He didn't check his status screen. He didn't need to. He knew what it looked like without opening it.

While his peers at the high-rank academies spent their mornings running mana-channeling drills, feeling the surge of System-granted strength flowing through their veins, Shinto felt only the dull, aching burn of bruised muscle and tired bone.

When an A-Rank or B-Rank combatant punched a wall, the System calculated their Strength attribute, applied their class multipliers, and crushed the stone with blue energy.

When Shinto punched the pillar, it was just a boy hitting wood.

"Your left hip is dropping on the pivot," a dry, gravelly voice called out from the covered walkway.

Shinto didn't stop. He reset his stance, shifted his weight onto his back foot, and threw a straight right-hip rotating first, power transferring through the core, snapping clean through the shoulder and into the target.

CRACK.

A hairline fracture spiderwebbed across the dense timber.

"Better," Daizan said, stepping out from the shade. He was older now, his hair completely silver, but his posture remained as rigid as a spear. He tossed a thick towel toward Shinto. "If you hit a low-tier mana barrier with that pivot, you'll break your hand before you crack their shield."

Shinto caught the towel, wiping the sweat from his forehead. His face was lean, his features sharp, with dark, unreadable eyes that rarely showed fatigue or frustration.

"I know," Shinto said, his voice flat and steady. "That's why I'm not hitting the barrier. I'm hitting the caster's throat before the chant completes."

Daizan let out a soft, dark chuckle. "Good. You haven't forgotten."

"How could I?" Shinto unbound the worn tape from his hands, revealing hands covered in calluses, small scars, and hardened knuckles. "Every time I step outside these gates, the System reminds everyone around me what I am. Level 1. Rank Null."

"Let them look at the screen," Daizan said, leaning on his cane as he walked up beside his grandson. "The world has become lazy, Shinto. They rely on System auto-aim to guide their blades. They rely on Mana Shields to swallow blows they never learned how to dodge. They think a higher number makes them invincible."

Daizan pointed the iron tip of his cane directly at Shinto's chest.

"You have no numbers. Which means when you stand in front of them... they will never see you coming."

Shinto looked down at his bloodied knuckles, then back up toward the main estate towers where his father and brother resided. In three weeks, the entrance trials for Oakhaven Academy would begin. Every noble house, every prodigy, and every high-ranked combatant in the city would be there.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a fresh roll of linen wrapping, and began binding his hands again.

"Let's go again, Grandfather," Shinto said softly, stepping back up to the wooden pillar. "I'm not finished."
