Forbidden secrets, short story.
The wind tugged at lose papers and fallen leaves, sending them skittering along the deserted pavement. The dull glow of the streetlights cast wavering shadows that seemed to move with a life of their own. Nothing about the scene seemed unusual though, until the sight of a faded photograph caught my eye.
Drawn by curiosity, i inched forward, each step echoed through the quiet street, the sound unnervingly loud against the stillness of the night. My stomach tightened as I took notice of a familiar face staring back at me. It was my father standing amongst complete strangers. Confusion with a mix of unease washed over me as countless questions raced through my mind. Who were they and why had I never heard of them before?
Clutching the photograph tightly i hurried home, my mind racing faster than my feet. The moment I rushed through the front door. I went straight to my room the pale glow of my computer illuminating in the dark room. Frantically I searched through old family records eager to know about my father's hidden past. Before tearing through dusty cupboards, scattering yellowed papers across the floor.
"What on earth are you doing?"
My mother called out her voice laced with confusion and a hint of concern. I muttered a vague excuse and continued searching, with every faded document and forgotten paragraph Was another piece of my father’s hidden past slowly uncovered from within the shadows.
Hours passed, unaware as I sat crossed legged on my bedroom floor, surrounded by a sea of faded photographs and yellowing newspapers. The soft glow of a desk light, casting long shadows that stretched across the walls. At first I was driven by curiosity more than anything I convinced myself there had to be a clear explanation. However, as I continued searching, curiosity slowly transformed into confusion and then confusion growing into a sense of unease. With each discovery more questions emerged than answers. My eyes scanned every detail, the expression on people’s faces, the locations in the background, and even the dates scrawled on the back of each photo. The deeper I dug, the more distant my father seemed. It was as though I was uncovering the life of a complete stranger rather than the Man who raised me. Frustration, fear and disbelief swirling within me. Making it impossible to let this go My heart pounded relentlessly as I reached
for one final bundle of papers.
Tucked between the documents was another photograph. I carefully lifted it in my hand, looking slightly. This image... a wave of shock rushed overme. The colour drained from my face and my breath caught in my throat. Staring back at me was my father, younger but unmistakable, standing beside a person whose arm draped casually around his shoulder. In that moment, every thought in my mind came to an abrupt stop. My hands shook as I stared at the photograph, desperately trying to make sense of what I had uncovered. Without thinking, I grab my jacket and shoved my feet into some shoes before rushing out of the house.
The cold night air burning my face as I ran through the streets. My heart hammering against my chest. Questions flooded through my mind, each one louder than the last. When minutes I reached the graveyard. Rows of weathered Headstones stood silently beneath the pale moonlight, shadows stretching across the frost covered grass, i made my way to a familiar stone that stood tall amoung the rest. I sank to my knees. There. Carved in the cold grey grave, was my father's name. A lump formed in the back of my throat. As I traced the letters with trembling fingers. Tears blurred my vision as I glance down at the photo within my grasp one last time. What truly had he been hiding and why had no one told me? The grave offered no answers. So alone I sat beside him.
Overwhelmed by the forbidden answers that had died with him.
