Chapter One — The Laurent Heir

London never truly slept.

Not even at two in the morning.

Rain covered the city in a thin silver veil as a black Mercedes moved through the nearly empty streets of Mayfair.

Inside the car, Nathaniel Laurent sat silently in the back seat.

One hand rested against the armrest.

The other held a glass of untouched whiskey.

His eyes remained fixed on the city passing beyond the tinted window.

“Sir.”

Nathaniel didn't look up.

“What?”

His right-hand man, Ethan Cole, glanced at him through the rear-view mirror.

“We're here.”

The car stopped in front of an old building hidden between two modern offices.

From the outside, it looked abandoned.

It wasn't.

Nathaniel stepped out.

Two men waiting near the entrance immediately straightened.

“Mr. Laurent.”

Nathaniel gave them a brief nod and walked inside.

The moment the heavy door closed behind him, the atmosphere changed.

Men in dark suits stood along the hallway.

Nobody spoke loudly.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody dared to.

They all knew who had just walked in.

Nathaniel Laurent.

Thirty years old.

Heir to the Laurent empire.

To the public, the Laurent family owned luxury hotels, restaurants, shipping companies and private investment firms across Europe.

That was the version printed in newspapers.

The other version was never printed.

The Laurent family had controlled London's underground network for decades.

And Nathaniel had been raised to inherit all of it.

He entered a private room at the end of the corridor.

Three men were already waiting.

One of them immediately stood.

“Nathaniel.”

Nathaniel removed his black coat and handed it to Ethan.

“Where is the money?”

The man hesitated.

Nathaniel's expression didn't change.

“I asked you a question.”

“It will be here tomorrow.”

Silence.

Nathaniel looked at him for several seconds.

“You told me the same thing yesterday.”

“I can explain—”

“You don't need to.”

Nathaniel walked toward the table.

He picked up the file lying there and opened it.

Numbers.

Names.

Locations.

Everything was neatly arranged.

He turned one page.

Then another.

Finally, he closed the file.

“Get out.”

The man's face went pale.

“Nathaniel, please—”

“Now.”

The man left without another word.

Ethan waited until the door closed.

“You're letting him walk away?”

Nathaniel looked toward the window.

“Tonight.”

Ethan understood.

There would be consequences later.

There always were.

Nathaniel poured himself a glass of water instead of touching the whiskey.

His phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

Dad.

He answered.

“What?”

His father's voice came through immediately.

“You've been avoiding me.”

“I've been busy.”

“You're thirty, Nathaniel.”

Nathaniel's jaw tightened.

“And?”

“You know exactly what I mean.”

He did.

His father had been talking about marriage for months.

Nathaniel walked toward the window.

“I'm not discussing this tonight.”

“You will.”

A pause.

Then his father's voice became firmer.

“You're coming home tomorrow. Your mother has arranged dinner.”

Nathaniel gave a humorless smile.

“Cancel it.”

“She already invited them.”

“Then uninvite them.”

“It's not a request.”

Nathaniel's expression hardened.

For the first time that night, something close to anger appeared in his eyes.

“I don't marry strangers because my family wants an alliance.”

His father was silent for a moment.

Then came the words Nathaniel hadn't expected.

“This marriage has nothing to do with an alliance.”

Nathaniel frowned.

“What does it have to do with?”

“You'll find out tomorrow.”

The call ended.

Nathaniel stared at the phone.

He hated surprises.

Especially when they came from his family.

---

The next morning, several miles away from the Laurent estate, a young woman was rushing through the rain because she was already late for university.

Lily Bennett had no idea that her life was about to collide with the Laurent family.

And she certainly didn't know that the man whose name was feared across London's darkest circles was about to become a part of her life.

She was simply trying not to miss her morning lecture.

With a half-eaten piece of toast in one hand and her university bag hanging from one shoulder, Lily ran toward the bus stop.

“Please don't leave…”

The bus doors closed.

Lily stopped.

She stared at it as it disappeared down the street.

“Perfect.”

She checked the time.

8:41 a.m.

Her first lecture started at nine.

She sighed, pushed a strand of hair away from her face and started walking.

She had no idea that, somewhere across London, Nathaniel Laurent was being told her name for the first time.

And that name was about to change everything.
