Twenty Years Later
Twenty Years Later
The airport was crowded.
Announcements echoed through the departure hall. Suitcases rolled across polished floors. Families said their goodbyes, while travelers hurried toward their gates.
But Kang Ji-hyun barely noticed any of it.
He was running.
Not like the athlete he had once been.
Not with perfect form or measured breathing.
He was running like a man who had just been given one final chance.
His heart pounded against his chest.
His breathing grew heavier with every step.
Yet he didn’t stop.
For twenty years, he had believed that some people were meant to remain only in memories.
For twenty years, he had told himself that the past was the past.
And for twenty years, he had been wrong.
His hand tightened around the small, worn piece of cloth inside his pocket.
He had carried it for longer than he could remember.
It had faded with time.
The edges were no longer perfect.
But one small letter was still visible.
N.
His fingers trembled.
He had never thrown it away.
Not when it became old.
Not when life changed.
Not even when he convinced himself that the person who had given it to him had forgotten him long ago.
A voice came through the airport speakers.
“Final boarding call…”
Ji-hyun stopped.
His eyes searched the departure hall.
People moved between him and the gates.
Then—
He saw her.
A woman standing several meters away.
Her back was turned toward him.
She was holding a suitcase.
For a moment, the entire airport seemed to disappear.
Twenty years vanished.
He was no longer a successful man in his late thirties.
He was eighteen again.
A young runner.
A pair of unwanted running shoes.
Blood on his feet.
And a mysterious girl laughing at him.
The girl who had given him a simple napkin.
The girl whose name he never learned.
The girl he had loved.
The girl he had lost.
Ji-hyun took one step forward.
Then another.
The woman suddenly paused.
As if she had felt something.
Slowly, she began to turn around.
Ji-hyun’s heart stopped.
Their eyes were about to meet.
And after twenty years of silence...
Their story was finally about to begin again.
Twenty years ago, they were strangers.
Twenty years later, they were running toward each other.
But neither knew how much they had lost along the way.
