Chapter 1—The Woman Who Came Back
The rain had stopped, but the night still felt heavy.
Amara stood beside the window, staring at the empty road outside. The streetlights reflected against the wet pavement, turning everything into blurred gold.
Daniel was behind her.
Neither of them had spoken since they left the house.
Amara’s hands were still trembling.
Her mother was alive.
The woman she had spent years believing was dead had stood in front of her and spoken her name.
Amara swallowed hard.
“She knew my name.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Amara turned around.
“You knew she was alive, didn’t you?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Amara noticed.
“Daniel.”
“I suspected.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
He looked away.
Amara walked toward him.
“You told me my father was killed because of the people he was investigating. You told me my mother was gone. You told me you were protecting me because my father trusted you.”
“I was.”
“But you didn’t tell me everything.”
Daniel’s silence was enough.
Amara felt something inside her break.
“How long?”
“Amara—”
“How long have you known?”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“Not long.”
“Days?”
He said nothing.
“Weeks?”
Still nothing.
“Months?”
“Amara, listen to me.”
“No.” She stepped back. “You listen to me.”
Her voice shook.
“I trusted you.”
“I know.”
“I followed you into places I was terrified to enter.”
“I know.”
“I believed you when you told me you were trying to protect me.”
“I was protecting you.”
“Then why does it feel like I’ve been the only person who didn’t know what was happening?”
Daniel moved closer.
Amara raised a hand.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
For the first time since she had met him, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.
Not afraid for himself.
Afraid of losing her.
“My mother is alive,” Amara whispered. “And you knew there was a possibility.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t know if she was coming back to save you or destroy you.”
Amara stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
He held it toward her.
Amara hesitated before taking it.
She unfolded it.
There was only one sentence written on the page.
If she returns, don’t trust her.
Amara’s heart stopped.
She recognized the handwriting.
Her father’s handwriting.
She looked up.
“Where did you get this?”
“It was inside the safe.”
“The safe we found?”
Daniel nodded.
“But you didn’t show me this.”
“I wasn’t sure what it meant.”
Amara looked down at the message again.
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
Her mother had returned.
Her father had warned her about that exact moment.
And somehow, Daniel had known enough to keep it from her.
A sudden sound came from outside.
Amara froze.
Daniel immediately turned toward the window.
“What was that?”
“I don’t know.”
He moved toward the curtains.
Amara followed.
The road outside appeared empty.
Then Daniel saw it.
A black car parked beneath the streetlight.
Its engine was running.
“Daniel?”
He didn’t answer.
The car’s headlights switched on.
Amara’s breath caught.
The vehicle began moving.
Slowly.
Then it stopped directly outside the house.
Daniel grabbed Amara’s hand.
“Stay behind me.”
“Who is it?”
“I don’t know.”
The driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out.
He looked toward the house.
Then he raised his hand.
Something flashed beneath the streetlight.
A phone.
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
Amara noticed.
“What?”
Daniel slowly turned the screen toward her.
There was a message.
You found her. Now bring her to me.
Amara looked toward the man outside.
“Who sent that?”
Daniel’s eyes remained fixed on the window.
“My past.”
The man outside suddenly walked away from the car.
He disappeared into the darkness.
Amara looked at Daniel.
“What happens now?”
Daniel took her hand.
“We leave.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere your mother can’t find us.”
Amara shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel stared at her.
“I’m done running.”
“Amara—”
“If my father left that warning for me, then there must be a reason.”
She folded the paper and placed it in her pocket.
“I’m going to find out why.”
Daniel watched her for several seconds.
Then he nodded.
“Then we’re going together.”
Amara looked into his eyes.
“Are you sure?”
Daniel reached for her hand.
“This time, I won’t keep anything from you.”
Neither of them noticed the small red light blinking from across the street.
Someone was watching.
And whoever it was had been listening to every word.
