The First Story
Long before Evelyn Hart was born, before the little town of Briar Glen had a name, there was a story.
Nobody knew who had written it.
Some said it had been created by a lonely king who wished to give his kingdom a future.
Others claimed it had been written by a witch who wanted to preserve a world that was disappearing.
A few whispered that it had never been written by a human being at all.
Whatever the truth was, the story was unlike any other.
It did not merely describe a world.
It created one.
Mountains rose from its pages.
Rivers began to flow.
Stars appeared in the sky.
People were born between sentences.
And when the first character opened their eyes, the story became alive.
But there was a problem.
The story had no ending.
Its final page remained blank.
The author tried to finish it.
Once.
Twice.
A hundred times.
Every ending they wrote disappeared by morning.
Eventually, the author understood.
The story did not want an ending.
It wanted another storyteller.
So the manuscript was closed.
Its pages were bound beneath dark blue leather, its corners protected with silver, and a strange golden keyhole was placed upon its cover.
Then the manuscript vanished.
It passed from hand to hand.
From author to author.
From generation to generation.
Some found it and could not understand its purpose.
Others tried to control it.
One author attempted to write themselves into the manuscript.
They were never seen again.
Another tried to destroy it.
The manuscript simply appeared on their desk the following morning, perfectly untouched.
And some authors heard the whispers.
The whispers from between the pages.
Finish us.
Remember us.
Tell our story.
But eventually, the manuscript always moved on.
Until one rainy evening, many years later, it appeared on the doorstep of a small house beside an ancient forest.
Inside that house lived an author named Evelyn Hart.
Evelyn had no idea that the manuscript had been searching for her.
She did not know that somewhere beyond the pages, forgotten kingdoms were waiting.
She did not know that characters she had abandoned were still alive.
She did not know that something had begun moving inside the oldest story she had ever written.
And she certainly did not know that someone had been waiting for her.
For a very long time.
Deep beneath the pages of the First Story, in a place where no author had ever written a word, a boy sat alone beside a locked door.
He looked very young.
Perhaps ten years old.
Perhaps a hundred.
It was difficult to tell.
A shadow stretched behind him.
He held a single golden feather between his fingers.
Then he heard something.
A sound from very far away.
A sound that had not been heard in the manuscript for generations.
The scratch of a pen.
The boy lifted his head.
For the first time in years, he smiled.
“She has started writing again.”
Behind him, the locked door trembled.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice whispered from the darkness beyond it.
“At last.”
The boy stood.
He slipped the golden feather into his pocket.
“It's time.”
The door began to open.
And somewhere in the ordinary world, Evelyn Hart was about to receive a box that would change her life forever.
The first story had found its author.
But this time...
the author was going to find the story.
