Prologue
Rain tapped against the glass on a gray morning as her father woke her to say goodbye before leaving for work. Her eyes were still swollen and heavy from crying all night—just like every night before it. She forced a bright smile, desperate to convince her family that she was happy and thriving, but beneath that fragile mask, the sheer weight of her pain and trauma was growing nearly impossible to hide.
Fresh out of college, Lily threw herself into job interviews, desperate for a distraction that could lift the suffocating weight off her chest. She was too resilient to spend the rest of her life trapped in this hollow ache; she was determined to rebuild. Her beauty was arresting—the kind of natural, rare grace that made people pause mid-sentence. With captivating eyes that lingered in everyone's memory and effortlessly striking features, she held an undeniable, lethal charm, a once-in-a-generation beauty who was ready to reclaim her life on her own terms.
She put on makeup to hide her swollen, tired eyes and conceal what her pillow and room had witnessed the night before. With her great sense of style, she picked an outfit that made her look like a confident boss ready to ace the interview.
She took an Uber and arrived at the company, which tested beauty products before they went on sale. Soon, her name was called. She walked in and handed over her resume.
The interviewer quickly noticed how smart she was and asked a technical question about product testing. Lily answered so clearly and intelligently that her very first response blew him away. Thoroughly impressed, he asked a couple more questions before congratulating her and inviting her to start the job the very next day.
That night, she cried until three in the morning, letting the tears wash over the familiar ache before sleep finally took over.
By six, her alarm went off. It was a grueling two-hour commute, and she needed to be at her desk by nine. Even running on three hours of sleep, she refused to let the exhaustion crack her composure. She kept the hurt locked away—never showing a trace on her face, never letting a single word slip to anyone. When the sadness and isolation became too loud to ignore, she poured it all into her journal, the only place where her honesty could live without judgment.
She got ready with her usual quiet precision. Downstairs, her mother had made breakfast, but Lily politely skipped it. She was never someone who could eat in the morning anyway; what she really needed was coffee, the one thing that could drag her mind through the workday after sleepless nights.
She arrived at the office, set her bag at her assigned desk, and grabbed a steaming cup of coffee just as the boss walked through the doors.
He gathered the group and introduced Lily to her new team. They shared a bright, spacious cabin and the other five team members welcomed her with genuine warmth. But one person immediately stood out: Mia. Bursting with bubbly energy and an easy, unapologetic friendliness, Mia was the kind of person who could turn any stranger into an ally in minutes.
The moment Lily caught Mia’s bright smile across the room, she knew right away—this was going to be her person.
The moment the boss walked away, the cabin broke into easy laughter and conversation. The team immediately circled Lily’s desk, gushing over how striking she was, complimenting her sharp outfit, and teasing that having someone so effortlessly stunning had instantly brightened up the whole room.
Before the crowd could overwhelm her, Mia gently pulled Lily aside by the elbow, guiding her toward the quiet corner.
"Okay, let me give you the real orientation," Mia whispered with a grin.
She walked Lily through the office landscape, In five minutes flat, Mia gave her the entire lowdown: who could actually help advance her career, whose advice to trust, and which toxic, credit-stealing coworkers to steer clear of at all costs. It was the candid, protective survival guide only a true friend would offer, and Lily couldn't help but smile, grateful for an instant ally on day one.
Her first day ended on a surprisingly high note. She had already made great friends, and the office was far warmer and more vibrant than she had ever expected.
