Chapter 1-Where am I
I opened my eyes and saw a ceiling of gold and white, a ceiling I didn’t recognize. I tried to lift my hands, but all I saw were tiny hands.
Panic hit me.
“Where am I?” I tried to say, but it came out as a wail.
A woman rushed over. She smelled like flowers. She smiled at me.
“Shh, shh, it’s okay,” she whispered, picking me up. Her face was kind. “There you go, little one.
My little one?
Who was she?
Where were my parents? My apartment? My job?
I calculated my age. I was three months old. My body was tiny, my head heavy, and I couldn’t even hold myself up.
People moved around me. Voices. A man’s voice, far away. Other women’s voices toou
I didn’t understand any of ito
The woman holding me hummed. “Yes, yes. Mama’s got you.i
Mama?
I had a mom. She was in another city. She was fifty-two, and this woman was not her.
Confusion. Fear. And under it all, exhaustion. I’d just escaped one life of being told what to do. Now I was trapped in a baby’s body, with a stranger calling me “little one” and a name I didn’t knohe

I knew I died, but how did I get here?
