Chapter 1- Your Desire
Come See Dylon
"Dylon, you stay away from the gypsies, ya ’ere me boy! Na gypsies, na good fuh you, seen?”
"Ya mom, I ’ere ya!”
I would have never guessed that the day I left my mother’s cottage by the sea in Guyana....would be my last day there. Adamina, the Gypsy, I was told to stay away from, changed my life. As I lay here slumped over bleeding on the kitchen floor, I wonder if I’ll make it. Adamina was right; she did give me all that I desired. I’m not an evil person; I just chose to keep my desires. If I do not make it......Vanessa will have to carry my burden, the deal I made with Adamina. I remember running up to Adamina; she had so many different colored scarves around her hair, so many bangles, rings, and earrings. She was always selling things, from jewelry to food; Adamina sold it all.
“Aye gypsy lady, what do you sell and why does my mother warn me to stay away from you?”
“Your mother is a wise woman as well as a fool.”
“How can she be wise and a fool?”
“Your mother is wise enough to know that everything comes at a price but a fool because sometimes, everything is worth the price. She will never know...but you will. You have that look that says you are desiring something heavy in your heart. What do you desire, child? I can give you all that you desire.”
“The kids tease me because I can’t grow any hair. My mother says I have a condition. My skin is different colors. My eyes are too big, and I have very thin lips like my father’s.
"So, you want to change your appearance, do you? What would you give up to change it all?”
“Anything!”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I said anything!”
***
“Where are we?”
“First, go look in the mirror, then I will explain everything to you.”
“I can’t believe it! My skin is as smooth and olive as my mother’s! My eyes! They’re not huge anymore; they’re small and narrow! I have hair!? I have hair now! I have long dreads! My lips! I have the lips of my mother, nice and full! Why do I have freckles and why are my eyes black as coal?? Where’s my hazel color? Why am I an adult now?
“I have given you all that you desire. I wanted your youth. You have freckles because my powders mixed together when I blew them on you. Your eyes are black and will remain so until you decide to change them. You said your eyes were big. You never said you wanted to keep your eye color.”
“What powders? How do I change my eye color back?”
“I used my powders to change your appearance. If you want to change your eye color, you will find someone who has the eyes you like, then make a bargain with them.”
“That makes no sense. How do I get my eye color back!?”
“You simply lay both of your hands over their eyes and then your eyes will change. Simple. ”
“Where are we? I need to see my mother.”
“You can never see your mother again, she will never understand your changes. We are not in Guyana anymore. We are in London. I also must tell you, your different colors of clothing and the layers are like mine. You can travel and make whatever bargains you desire if you stay dressed this way. I have given you a small bag of powders. I have also put a few things in your satchel to sell. Do not look in the satchel! Let the people reach in and pick what they want. Do you have any questions of me?”
“Where do I sell the things, you’ve given me? I know I’m not immortal because you took my youth...so how long can I live?”
“You are wise just like your mother, Dylon. You can sell your things wherever you like.”
“My life.... How long do I have it!? When will I die?
“Sooner, than later.”
Adamina was gone in a puff of green and yellow powder. Don’t look in the satchel.... Why can’t I look in the satchel? If I die sooner than later.... then I’m taking as many people with me as I can!!
“Hey mon, Hey mon, come get an item or some-ting from Dylon!”
“Hey mon, Hey mon, come get an item or some-ting from Dylon!”
“Hey, what are you selling? I’m running late for the gym and left my headphones at home. Please tell me you have some.”
“I have whatever you desire.”
“Look, I don’t have time for games. Do you have headphones or not?”
“I have whatever you desire. Reach into the satchel.”
“Thank you. That’s all you had to say! How much?”
“They will be yours for $40.00.”
“I’m not paying you $40.00! You’re selling junk on the street. I’ll give you $20.00.”
“These are special earbuds. The music is enhanced so that the sound will explode in your ear. You’ll never hear anything as clear as this again.”
“I don’t care how enhanced these are! Look, take the $20.00, I’m gone!”
***
“Hey Rick, I see you finally made it bro! What took you so long? You know we have to get a full work out for this competition in a week!”
“I know! I had to stop and get some earbuds from the bargain guy that’s always in the square selling stuff. I was in a rush and left my headphones at home.”
“You mean, you bought earbuds from the guy with all the different colour clothes!? I wouldn’t buy anything from him. He dresses weird.”
"So, are we doing this, or do you want to stand around talking about how the guy dresses?”
“Alright, alright, we’ll get to it.”
I bet Rick never noticed the faster he lifted weights, the louder the music became. I told him these were special earbuds. More weights...the more intense the Rammstein’s Du Hast song became.... more weights...higher decibels.... until he was on the bench screaming in pain unable to remove the earbuds. I told him they were special.... once you put them in... you cannot take them out. Louder he screamed, pulling at the earbuds. His friend tried to pull them out but could not help him. Rick was becoming desperate to pull them out. So, he dropped the weights and they fell on his chest, choking him as he tried to pull at the earbuds. His friend tried to lift the weights off, but they were too much for him. Louder the music became, everything started going black as Rick’s air supply was slowly being cut off...until his eardrums popped, and blood and puss oozed from his ears...
I told him the sound would explode in his ear.
