PRÓLOGO

Primero fue el silencio. No el que sigue a una tormenta, ni el que duerme en una ciudad abandonada. Era otro tipo de silencio. Más espeso. Más viejo. Uno que parecía observarnos... como si supiera algo que nosotros ignorábamos.


Después vinieron los rumores. Luces que se apagaban donde jamás debían. Puertas que no volvían a abrirse. Voces pidiendo ayuda que se ahogaban de repente, devueltas otra vez al silencio.


Nadie recuerda el momento exacto en que todo cambió. Algunos culpan a un meteoro, a un satélite caído, a guerras nucleares, a catástrofes naturales o a conspiraciones oscuras. Pero yo estuve ahí.


Y sé que no fue el cielo ni la tierra: fue el hombre.

Fue una elección. Una idea sembrada en un punto sin retorno. Científicos jugando a ser dioses bajo la coartada de buscar la salvación. Un laboratorio enterrado en las entrañas de la montaña y algo que jamás debió despertar.


Ahora, el mundo es ceniza. El sol ya no garantiza seguridad. Las sombras caminan, y nosotros —ocho, y no por casualidad— cargamos sobre los hombros con el peso de lo que queda.


No sé si fuimos elegidos o si simplemente estábamos en el lugar equivocado. Pero de algo estoy segura: nadie va a salvarnos. Nadie vendrá por nosotros.

Y lo que comenzó en aquel búnker... aún no ha terminado.
