Introduction
The last word of the email glowed on the screen like a lighthouse in the fog: “Congratulations.”
Clara stood still, breath caught. Five years of grind, sleepless nights polishing her portfolio, polite “no”s, devastating radio silences—all of it dissolved at once, sucked in by that one word. At Veridian Dynamics. Senior designer position. Dream come true. Her fingers trembled on the trackpad. She reread the message three times, looking for the flaw, the hidden clause, the cruel joke. There was none.
A laugh escaped her, nervous, then liberating. She jumped up and did an awkward pirouette in her too-small studio, bumping into the stack of books on the minimalist workspace she desperately tried to cultivate. Didn't matter. Everything would change. She would finally leave this grey city, get a real apartment with windows opening onto something other than a brick wall, send a photo of the office to her mother with a simple “wink.”
She spent the evening in a vibrant bubble of euphoria. She called her best friend, Lina, who screamed with joy on the other end. She ordered sushi like crazy, even the truffle roll she never allowed herself. She opened the cheap champagne that had waited its hour for months on the fridge shelf, and took a first sip while watching the sunset tint the low clouds pink.
Then fatigue hit her, heavy and sweet. The adrenaline dropped, leaving behind a deep, happy exhaustion in her muscles. She slipped into bed, smile still glued to her lips. The weight of freshly washed sheets was a caress. Through the thin wall, she heard the neighbors' muffled laughter. For once, the noise didn't irritate her. It seemed part of a universal symphony of success.
Her last conscious thought was a calculation: With Veridian's salary, I could buy myself that black wool coat… the one in the window…
Sleep swallowed her without warning, like a dive into a lake of warm ink.
