The Hunger Beneath

THE HUNGER BENEATH

Chapter One

The Apartment

Megan Carter moved into Blackwood Apartments on a rainy Thursday in October.

She remembered the day because the rain had followed her for three hours.

By the time she pulled into the parking lot, her windshield wipers were struggling against the downpour. The apartment complex looked older than it had in the photographs.

Six stories of weather-stained brick.

Forty-eight apartments.

One narrow parking lot surrounded by dying trees.

A flickering sign above the entrance read:

BLACKWOOD APARTMENTS

The second half of the sign hadn't worked in years.

Megan turned off her car and stared at the building.

She was twenty-eight years old, newly divorced, and exhausted.

She didn't want a beautiful apartment.

She didn't want a perfect neighborhood.

She wanted somewhere cheap where nobody knew her.

Blackwood seemed perfect.

At least, that's what she thought.

The landlord, Mr. Holloway, met her in the lobby.

He was a thin, nervous man in his seventies who smiled too much.

"Apartment 3B," he said, handing her the keys.

Megan looked up.

"Is the building usually this quiet?"

Holloway smiled.

"Most people keep to themselves."

"That's good."

He hesitated.

Then he added:

"Especially after dark."

Megan laughed.

He didn't.

She stopped laughing.

"What does that mean?"

"Old building."

He looked toward the elevator.

"Old noises."

The elevator doors opened.

Holloway stepped inside.

Megan followed.

As the doors closed, she noticed something scratched into the metal wall.

Three words.

DON'T LOOK BACK.

She frowned.

"Kids?"

Holloway didn't answer.

---

Megan spent the next several months settling into her new life.

Blackwood wasn't a bad place.

It was just strange.

The pipes knocked at night.

The elevator occasionally stopped between floors.

The lights in the hallway flickered whenever it rained.

And sometimes, around two in the morning, Megan heard footsteps outside her apartment.

Slow footsteps.

Step.

Step.

Step.

They always stopped outside her door.

The first time it happened, she assumed it was a neighbor.

The second time, she looked through the peephole.

Nobody was there.

The third time, she opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

But the elevator at the end of the hall was open.

Megan stared at it.

She lived on the third floor.

The elevator had stopped on the fourth.

She closed her door.

She told herself it was nothing.

For almost a year, it was.

Then people began disappearing.

---

The first was Mr. Holloway.

His apartment was directly across from Megan's.

One morning, his newspaper remained outside his door.

His car remained in the parking lot.

His wallet was on the kitchen counter.

His clothes were in the closet.

But Holloway was gone.

The police searched the building.

They found nothing.

His disappearance became an unsolved case.

Six months later, Apartment 4B became vacant.

Then 4A.

Then 5C.

Nobody knew what happened.

There were no signs of struggle.

No broken doors.

No blood.

No abandoned vehicles.

Just people who seemed to vanish.

Megan started keeping a list.

Holloway — Missing.

Sandra Lewis — Missing.

Robert and Elaine Price — Missing.

Thomas Bell — Missing.

Seven names.

Then eight.

Then nine.

Megan eventually stopped writing them down.

Because she realized something.

Every missing person had lived in the building.

And every missing person had complained about the same thing.

Footsteps.

---

Daniel Reyes moved into 3C two years after Megan.

He was thirty-one, worked nights as an emergency medical technician, and had an annoying habit of knocking on Megan's door whenever he cooked too much food.

"You need to eat," he told her one evening.

Megan looked at the container in his hand.

"What is it?"

"Lasagna."

"How do I know you didn't poison it?"

"You don't."

She smiled.

"Fair."

Their friendship developed slowly.

Coffee became dinners.

Dinners became late-night conversations.

Daniel eventually told her why he had chosen Blackwood.

"My mother lived here."

Megan looked up.

"Really?"

"Apartment 2A."

"What happened to her?"

Daniel looked toward the window.

"She disappeared."

Megan stopped smiling.

"When?"

"Eight years ago."

Neither spoke for a moment.

"That's why you moved here?"

Daniel nodded.

"I wanted to know what happened."

Megan looked at the hallway.

"Have you found anything?"

"Not yet."

Then he smiled.

"But I have a theory."

"What?"

"Something is wrong with this building."

Megan laughed.

"That's not a theory."

Daniel smiled.

"No. That's a fact."

---

Three years passed.

The disappearances continued.

But slowly.

One person every few months.

Then every few weeks.

The police stopped investigating seriously.

The landlord changed.

The city stopped advertising apartments in Blackwood.

Eventually, half the building was empty.

Megan and Daniel remained.

They became closer.

They talked about leaving together.

They even found a small house outside the city.

But they never moved.

Something always stopped them.

And then, one winter morning, Megan discovered something beneath the wallpaper in her bedroom.

A door.

It hadn't been there before.

There was no handle.

Only a small metal plate.

And carved into the wood were four words:

IT IS STILL SLEEPING.

Megan called Daniel.

He stared at it for a long time.

Then he whispered:

"Sleeping where?"

A sound came from beneath their feet.

A deep vibration.

Barely audible.

Like something enormous breathing beneath the Earth.

Megan looked at Daniel.

Neither of them spoke.

For the first time, they both understood.

Whatever was happening at Blackwood...

it had nothing to do with ghosts.

Something was underneath them.

And it had been there for a very long time.

---

Chapter Two

The Thing in the Mirrors

The city eventually forgot about Blackwood Apartments.

That was the strangest part.

The disappearances became old news.

The building became a place people avoided.

Graffiti covered the lower walls.

The elevators stopped working.

The landlord stopped answering calls.

But Megan and Daniel stayed.

They told themselves they were investigating.

The truth was more complicated.

They were afraid to leave.

Because by then, both of them had started seeing things.

Megan noticed it first.

Her reflection sometimes moved a fraction of a second after she did.

At first, she blamed exhaustion.

Then she tested it.

She stood in front of the bathroom mirror.

Raised her right hand.

Her reflection followed.

She lowered it.

The reflection lowered its hand.

Everything seemed normal.

Then Megan smiled.

Her reflection didn't.

Megan stopped smiling.

The reflection continued.

Slowly, the reflection raised one finger to its lips.

Shhh.

Megan stumbled backward.

The mirror returned to normal.

She called Daniel.

He arrived within minutes.

"I saw it," she said.

Daniel didn't laugh.

Instead, he said:

"So have I."

---

They began investigating the building.

They searched old records.

They found blueprints.

Blackwood had been built in 1964.

But the blueprints showed something strange.

The original plans showed seven floors.

The current building had six.

Megan stared at the document.

"Where did the seventh floor go?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know."

They searched city records.

Every document said six floors.

Except one.

A construction report from 1963.

It contained a single handwritten note.

SUBSTRUCTURE SEALED. DO NOT DISTURB.

Below it was a symbol.

A circle containing an eye.

Megan stared at it.

"That's on my door."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

She took him upstairs.

The strange wooden door was still there.

The symbol had appeared above the words.

An eye.

Inside the eye were dozens of tiny circles.

Like pupils.

Daniel touched the wood.

The building shook.

They both stepped back.

Something knocked from behind the door.

Knock.

They froze.

Knock.

Megan whispered:

"There's something behind it."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Another knock.

Knock.

Daniel looked at the floor.

"It's underneath it."

---

Over the next two years, they discovered more.

Blackwood had been built over an abandoned mine.

The mine had been closed in 1958 after workers reported hearing voices underground.

Thirty-two miners had disappeared.

No bodies were recovered.

The official explanation was a collapse.

But an old newspaper article contained something else.

A surviving miner had claimed that the workers had discovered a cavern.

Inside were thousands of strange black stones.

And every stone had an eye carved into it.

The mine was sealed.

Five years later, Blackwood Apartments was built.

Megan read the article twice.

Then she noticed the date.

The first disappearance at Blackwood had happened three months after construction ended.

Daniel stared at her.

"People have been feeding it."

Megan looked at him.

"Who?"

"Whatever's down there."

---

The entity appeared slowly.

Never completely.

A shadow in a mirror.

A silhouette at the end of a hallway.

A face reflected in a window.

It never attacked them.

Not directly.

Instead, it whispered.

Sometimes in Megan's voice.

Sometimes in Daniel's.

Sometimes in the voices of people they had never met.

Then, one night, it spoke clearly.

Megan was brushing her teeth when her reflection looked at her.

Megan.

She froze.

The reflection smiled.

You are running out of time.

Megan backed away.

"What are you?"

The reflection tilted its head.

I am the door.

Megan's blood went cold.

"What is behind you?"

The reflection's smile disappeared.

Hunger.

The mirror cracked.

A thin black line appeared across the glass.

Then the reflection whispered:

He is waking.

---

The next morning, Daniel showed Megan something.

An old photograph.

His mother.

Standing outside Blackwood eight years before she disappeared.

Behind her was a man Megan recognized.

Mr. Holloway.

But there was something else.

In the background stood a little girl.

She was staring directly at the camera.

Daniel zoomed in.

The girl's eyes were completely black.

Megan whispered:

"Who is she?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know."

Megan looked at the date.

The photograph had been taken twenty years before she was born.

Yet the girl looked exactly the same.

---

Years passed.

Blackwood deteriorated.

The city condemned it.

But no demolition company would touch the building.

Workers who entered refused to return.

One demolition crew lasted twelve minutes.

The foreman told police:

"We heard something breathing under the basement."

Then he quit.

Megan and Daniel were the only people who continued going inside.

By then, they were the last residents.

They had spent nearly a decade trying to understand Blackwood.

And they had finally discovered the truth.

The entity wasn't the thing beneath the building.

It was a servant.

A collector.

A creature that gathered souls.

But it wasn't feeding itself.

It was feeding something else.

Something beneath the Earth.

Something ancient.

Something enormous.

And it was beginning to wake.

---

Chapter Three

The Awakening

Megan knew the end had begun when the birds stopped singing.

There had been birds around Blackwood for years.

Pigeons.

Sparrows.

Crows.

They nested in the trees surrounding the parking lot.

Then one morning, every bird disappeared.

The next day, insects vanished.

Then animals.

Dogs refused to walk near the building.

Cats hissed at empty hallways.

Even rats abandoned the basement.

Daniel found the reason three days later.

The ground beneath the apartment complex was warm.

Not warm like sunlight.

Warm like a living body.

He placed his hand against the basement floor.

It pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then again.

Like a heartbeat.

Megan stared at him.

"How long?"

Daniel looked frightened.

"I don't know."

The heartbeat came again.

THUMP.

The building shook.

---

The entity appeared that night.

It stood at the end of the hallway.

For the first time, Megan could see its entire body.

Tall.

Thin.

Almost human.

Its skin was black.

Its face was empty.

No eyes.

No mouth.

Yet Megan could hear it breathing.

Daniel stepped in front of her.

The creature spoke.

You have stayed longer than the others.

Daniel raised a flashlight.

"Where is your master?"

The creature tilted its head.

For several seconds, it didn't answer.

Then it pointed toward the floor.

He is awake.

The building shook.

The creature continued:

He has been asleep beneath you for longer than your species has existed.

Megan whispered:

"What is he?"

The creature's body trembled.

For the first time, Megan heard fear in its voice.

Hungry.

Then it disappeared.

---

The next morning, cracks appeared across the basement floor.

They spread through the building.

Through the lobby.

Through the parking lot.

Across the surrounding streets.

The city experienced a series of unexplained earthquakes.

Scientists blamed underground fault activity.

But Megan knew better.

Blackwood was sitting on top of something.

Something that was moving.

The final night came in the winter of the tenth year.

Megan and Daniel stood in the lobby.

The entire building was shaking.

The walls groaned.

Windows shattered.

The elevator doors opened and closed repeatedly.

Then the floor collapsed.

A massive hole appeared beneath the apartment building.

Megan looked down.

She couldn't see the bottom.

Then something moved.

Daniel grabbed her hand.

"Run."

The first finger emerged from the Earth.

It was enormous.

Wider than a truck.

Black.

Covered in stone-like scales.

It curled around the edge of the crater.

Then another finger appeared.

Then another.

The Earth began splitting apart.

The apartment building started collapsing into the hole.

Megan and Daniel ran outside.

Behind them, Blackwood Apartments disappeared.

But the thing underneath continued rising.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Like a mountain dragging itself from the ground.

First came its shoulders.

Then its neck.

Then its head.

It kept rising.

Higher than the surrounding buildings.

Higher than the clouds.

Megan couldn't understand its size.

It looked like an entire mountain had grown a body.

Then the eyes opened.

Thousands of tiny eyes.

They covered its face.

Its neck.

Its chest.

Its enormous arms.

They blinked independently.

Thousands of tiny eyes searching the world.

Daniel whispered:

"That's impossible."

Megan shook her head.

"No."

She stared upward.

"It's real."

The demon finally stood.

Its head disappeared into the clouds.

Then every eye turned toward the city.

The creature opened its mouth.

The sound that came from it was not a roar.

It was a whisper.

A whisper heard inside every human mind on Earth.

I AM HUNGRY.

---

Chapter Four

The First Meal

The city stopped moving.

Cars remained abandoned in the streets.

People stood frozen.

Everyone was looking at the mountain-sized creature rising from beneath Blackwood Apartments.

The demon's thousands of eyes moved independently.

Some watched the city.

Some watched the sky.

Some looked toward the ocean.

Some looked toward distant mountains.

It was studying the world.

Then it opened its mouth.

The air began moving toward it.

At first, only dust.

Then papers.

Then branches.

Then cars.

People screamed as the wind became a hurricane.

Daniel grabbed Megan.

"Get inside!"

They ran into a parking garage.

The demon inhaled again.

The sound became deafening.

Then the souls began leaving the living.

Megan watched through a broken window.

White lights rose from people in the streets.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Millions.

They floated upward.

The demon swallowed them.

Its thousands of eyes glowed.

And the creature grew.

Daniel stared.

"It's feeding."

Megan shook her head.

"On souls."

The demon took its first step.

BOOM.

The ground shook for miles.

Its second step crushed an entire section of the city.

BOOM.

Its third step sent buildings collapsing.

BOOM.

It had crawled out of the Earth.

Now it was walking across it.

---

Megan suddenly saw the smaller entity.

It stood at the edge of the crater.

The creature that had haunted Blackwood for years.

The thing that had drained the residents.

The thing Megan had believed was the monster.

It looked tiny now.

It bowed toward the demon.

Megan understood.

"You were feeding it."

The entity looked toward her.

For the first time, Megan saw something resembling a smile.

Yes.

"Why?"

The entity answered:

Because it was hungry.

The demon reached down.

One enormous finger touched the smaller creature.

It dissolved instantly.

A cloud of black smoke rose into the air.

The demon inhaled.

The smoke disappeared.

The servant was gone.

Megan stared.

Daniel whispered:

"It killed its own servant."

Megan looked at the demon.

"No."

She watched the thousands of eyes.

"It ate it."

---

The demon continued walking.

It didn't destroy the world immediately.

That was what made it worse.

It moved slowly.

Deliberately.

For months.

The first year, entire cities disappeared.

The second year, oceans began boiling away.

The third year, the world's governments collapsed.

Humanity tried everything.

Missiles.

Nuclear weapons.

Aircraft.

Submarines.

Nothing hurt it.

The demon simply kept walking.

It was not angry.

It wasn't trying to conquer Earth.

It was eating.

Over the next several years, civilization became a memory.

Megan and Daniel survived longer than most.

They traveled with small groups of survivors.

They moved underground.

They avoided mirrors.

They covered windows.

They learned never to look at the sky when the demon was near.

But there was nowhere to hide forever.

Eventually, the demon found them.

One morning, Megan woke to a strange sound.

THUMP.

She looked outside.

A gigantic eye was staring through the clouds.

Daniel woke beside her.

He looked out the window.

"We're out of time."

Megan took his hand.

"At least we're together."

The demon's voice entered their minds.

YOUR WORLD IS SMALL.

Megan closed her eyes.

BUT IT WAS ENOUGH.

The ground shook.

Daniel squeezed her hand.

Then the darkness came.

---

Years later, Earth was silent.

The oceans were gone.

The cities were gone.

The forests were gone.

Humanity was gone.

Earth had become a dead, black sphere drifting through space.

Above it stood the demon.

Its mountain-sized body floated among the stars.

Thousands of tiny eyes watched the darkness.

Then the demon looked away from Earth.

It stared toward another world.

A blue planet.

Oceans.

Continents.

Cities.

Billions of living souls.

The demon's eyes opened wider.

A low growl rolled through space.

It began moving.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Toward the new planet.

The dead Earth disappeared behind it.

The demon didn't look back.

It didn't need to.

It was already hungry again.

Far away, on the blue planet, a little boy stood beside his bedroom window.

He looked up at the night sky.

One star disappeared.

Then another.

Then another.

The boy frowned.

Something enormous was moving between them.

Then the child screamed as two massive hands landed on his planet
