Chapter 1 The Invitation

Chapter 1 – The Invitation

It had been two years since college ended.

The group that once spent every day together had now been scattered in different directions by life. Careers, responsibilities, deadlines, and expectations had slowly replaced laughter, freedom, and late-night conversations.

Reena worked in a corporate company in Chennai. Her life had become a cycle of meetings, reports, targets, and deadlines.

Yamini worked night shifts. She slept during the day and worked through the night.

Ammu was balancing work and family responsibilities at the same time.

Nandhini worked as a freelance designer. Even though she worked from home, stress never seemed to leave her.

Karthi was stuck in an IT job, spending most of his day staring at a laptop screen.

Ajay worked in sales, constantly traveling and chasing targets.

Arjun was trying to build his own startup. He had big dreams, but those dreams came with enormous pressure.

Only two years had passed since graduation, yet it felt like an entire lifetime.

One Friday evening, while cleaning her desk after work, Reena accidentally found an old photograph hidden inside a drawer.

She picked it up.

The picture showed all seven of them smiling together during a college cultural event.

Reena.

Yamini.

Ammu.

Nandhini.

Karthi.

Ajay.

Arjun.

Looking at the photograph brought an unexpected smile to her face.

"Life was so simple back then..."

she whispered to herself.

After staring at it for a few moments, she opened their old college group chat.

The chat had been silent for months.

She typed a message.

"Guys... how about we meet at the café tomorrow evening?"

She hit send.

Within seconds, notifications started appearing.

Ajay: "I'm in."

Yamini: "Finally!"

Ammu: "Count me in."

Nandhini: "I'll be there."

Karthi: "Coffee is on me."

Arjun: "Done."

Reena smiled.

Some things never changed.

---

The next evening.

6:30 PM.

A small café in the middle of the city.

Ajay arrived first.

Then Karthi.

One by one, the others joined.

For the first few minutes, things felt slightly awkward.

But it didn't last long.

Soon, the old memories returned.

The laughter followed.

"Karthi, remember when you almost broke the projector during the final-year presentation?" Ajay asked.

The entire table burst into laughter.

"That wasn't me!" Karthi protested.

"Stop lying."

"Who got called to the principal's office?"

"Not me!"

More laughter.

For a moment, it felt like they were back in college.

After some time, Reena took a sip of coffee and asked,

"So... how's life treating everyone?"

The smiles slowly faded.

"Stress."

"Pressure."

"Deadlines."

"Targets."

One after another, everyone gave the same answer.

Nobody seemed truly happy.

Nobody seemed free.

Life had slowly taken over.

"What happened to us?" Reena asked with a weak smile.

Ajay nodded.

"College was better."

"We were together every day."

"We laughed every day."

"We fought every day."

"And somehow, we always fixed everything."

Silence settled over the table.

Each of them was thinking about the same thing.

College.

Yamini finally broke the silence.

"Guys..."

"When was the last time all of us went on a trip together?"

Nobody answered immediately.

They tried to remember.

None of them could.

Karthi shrugged.

"We'll plan something when we get time."

Ammu immediately hit the table.

"That's exactly what we've been saying for the last two years."

Everyone laughed.

"So what do you suggest?" Ajay asked.

Ammu crossed her arms.

"We're going in two days."

"Discussion over."

The table exploded with reactions.

"What?"

"In two days?"

"Are you serious?"

"Very."

After several minutes of arguing, laughing, and debating...

everyone agreed.

The trip was officially happening.

---

"Beach?" Reena suggested.

"No."

"Hill station?"

"No."

"Resort?"

"No."

"Then where?"

A mischievous smile appeared on Karthi's face.

"The forest."

"The forest?" Nandhini asked nervously.

"There's an old route through the forest."

"I heard there's an abandoned mansion somewhere nearby."

Ajay immediately looked interested.

"Now that's exciting."

Yamini nodded.

"Finally. Something different."

Ammu clapped her hands.

"Done."

Reena wasn't completely convinced.

But seeing everyone's excitement, she agreed.

The destination was decided.

The forest.

---

That night.

Rain poured heavily across the city.

Thunder echoed through the darkness.

Nandhini sat on her bed, packing her travel bag.

Flashlight.

Power bank.

Clothes.

Snacks.

Everything was ready.

She checked her phone.

11:10 PM.

The rain continued outside.

Lightning flashed across the sky.

Just as she was about to lock her phone, a notification appeared.

Unknown Number.

She frowned.

Curious, she opened the message.

There was only one sentence.

"Thank you for accepting the invitation."

Nandhini stared at the screen.

Invitation?

What invitation?

She immediately replied.

"Who is this?"

No response.

No typing indicator.

Nothing.

Assuming it was a prank, she placed the phone aside.

But at that exact moment...

the same message arrived on the phones of six other people.

Reena.

Yamini.

Ammu.

Karthi.

Ajay.

Arjun.

Every single one of them received it.

---

Within minutes, the group chat became active again.

Ajay: "Guys, did anyone else get a weird message?"

Yamini: "Wait... me too."

Reena: "Hold on. Same here."

Screenshots flooded the chat.

Everyone had received the exact same message.

The same wording.

The same unknown sender.

"Ammu, was this your idea?"

"No!"

"Karthi?"

"Not me."

"Ajay?"

"I got it too!"

After several minutes of discussion, they eventually convinced themselves it was just a prank.

One by one, everyone went offline.

But something still bothered Nandhini.

She opened the screenshot again.

And then she noticed something strange.

The timestamp.

11:11 PM

She quickly checked the others.

Ajay.

11:11 PM.

Reena.

11:11 PM.

Karthi.

11:11 PM.

Everyone.

The exact same time.

The exact same minute.

A cold feeling crept through her chest.

Then her phone vibrated again.

Another message.

From the same unknown sender.

Her fingers froze.

Slowly, she opened it.

One sentence.

"See you soon."

Nandhini immediately tried calling the number.

Not available.

No profile picture.

No information.

Nothing.

She refreshed the screen.

The sender had disappeared.

Only the messages remained.

Outside, the storm grew stronger.

Lightning illuminated her room for a brief second.

She turned toward the window.

Nobody was there.

Yet she couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.

Her phone screen continued glowing in the darkness.

The final message stared back at her.

"See you soon."

That night, Nandhini fell asleep.

But she couldn't stop thinking about those words.

Because someone knew about their trip.

Someone knew about their decision.

And most importantly...

How did they know the invitation had been accepted?
