Chapter 1 rejected
The whole pack is watching when Alpha Kael rejects me.
One hundred and twelve wolves in human skin, ringed around the fire pit, and every pair of eyes is on me as the mate-bond snaps into place between us like a struck wire.
Champagne and pine. That's what he smells like. That's what fate smells like.
It's my eighteenth birthday. The Mating Moon. The night unmated wolves present themselves and pray the Moon Goddess is kind.
She is not kind to omegas.
But the bond doesn't care about rank. It slams into my chest so hard my knees buckle, and across the fire, Kael Blackwood goes rigid.
For one heartbeat, I see it land on him too. His nostrils flare. His claws punch through his fingertips.
Then his face goes cold.
"No."
The word drops into the silence like a stone into still water.
A laugh ripples through the crowd — sharp, delighted. Of course they're delighted. I'm Mara Vane. Wolfless at eighteen. The omega who scrubs the packhouse floors and eats last. The girl the Goddess forgot.
And the bond chose *me* for *him*.
Kael steps around the fire, slow and deliberate, and stops an arm's length away. Up close he's even bigger. Scar through his left eyebrow from the rogue hunt that killed his father. Gold eyes, fully shifted now, dragging over me like I'm something stuck to his boot.
"You feel it too," I whisper. "Don't lie. You feel it."
"I feel it," he says, loud enough for everyone. "And I reject it."
Someone gasps. Someone else laughs harder.
Sable Draven slides out of the crowd and hooks her arm through his — Sable, the Beta's daughter, all curves and perfect control of the russet wolf she shifted into at sixteen, two years early. She's been warming his bed for a year. Everyone knows. Everyone including me.
"I, Kael Blackwood, Alpha of the Blackpine Pack," he says, voice carrying to the treeline, "reject you, Mara Vane, as my mate."
The pain is not metaphorical. It feels like my ribs cracking open one by one. I hit my knees in the dirt, and the thin silver scar on my wrist — the one I've had since birth, the one the pack healer said was just a birthmark — *burns*.
White-hot. Blinding. I bite my scream in half.
"And I take Sable Draven as my chosen mate," Kael finishes, and the pack erupts in howls.
Chosen. Not fated. A slap wearing a smile.
Through the ringing in my ears, I hear his final verdict, tossed over his shoulder as he turns away with her:
"Leave Blackpine by moonset, omega. Rogues don't get pack protection."
---
The Hollow eats the moonlight.
I've been running for an hour — barefoot, in my ceremony dress, the one I sewed from packhouse scraps because I actually believed tonight would change everything. Branches tear the skirt. My wrist still throbs where the scar burned, pulsing in time with my heart like something *in there* is knocking.
Then the forest goes quiet.
Every cricket. Every owl. Gone.
Three shapes detach from the dark between the trees. Rogues — wolves gone feral, eyes wrong, mouths open. The biggest one is already mid-shift, bones cracking wetly as he goes down on all fours.
I have no wolf. I have no claws. I have a torn dress and a burning wrist and eighteen years of being nobody.
I close my eyes.
The lunge never lands.
Instead there's a sound like the entire forest inhaling at once — and a snarl so deep I feel it in my molars. The rogues *whimper*. Actually whimper. Then they're gone, crashing away through the underbrush like rabbits.
I open my eyes.
A wolf stands where they were. Black as the Hollow itself, twice Kael's size, with eyes like molten gold — and across its massive forehead, a jagged marking like a crown.
It shifts.
The man who rises from the shift is the most terrifying thing I've ever seen. Tall. Scarred. Power rolling off him in waves that make my knees want to bend on their own. When he looks at my wrist — at the silver scar still glowing faintly through my skin — he smiles.
"Eighteen years," he says softly. "I've waited eighteen years for that mark to wake up."
He takes one step closer, and the bond — *a bond*, impossible, searing, champagne-and-pine gone and replaced with smoke and winter — detonates in my chest.
"Hello, mate."
