CHAPTER 1
The rain had been falling since midnight.
Ethan Carter sat on his bed, staring through the window as lightning flashed across the dark sky.
He couldn't sleep.
Something about that night felt different.
Then he heard it.
Knock... knock... knock...
Ethan froze.
The sound had come from downstairs.
He slowly opened his bedroom door.
The house was completely silent.
"Mom?" he called.
No answer.
He walked down the stairs.
Another sound came from the living room.
Knock... knock...
Ethan switched on the light.
Nothing.
Then he noticed something beneath the old wooden table.
A small, dusty box.
He had never seen it before.
Ethan picked it up.
There was a name written on the top.
Daniel Carter.
His father's name.
Ethan's heart began beating faster.
His father had died eight years ago.
Why would his father's name be written on a box that had suddenly appeared in their house?
He opened it.
Inside was an old photograph...
and a sealed letter.
Ethan turned the photograph over.
His hands began shaking.
Five words were written on the back:
"DO NOT TRUST YOUR MOTHER."
Ethan stared at the message in disbelief.
Then he heard footsteps behind him.
He slowly turned around.
His mother was standing in the doorway.
She looked at the box in his hands.
Her face suddenly went pale.
"Ethan..."
"Where did you find that?"
