Prologue
THIRD PERSON
“Are you sure you want to go out tonight, honey?” An omega elf woman with black hair said to his son from the kitchen sink. She was cleaning the dishes from that night’s dinner.
“Yes, mom. It will be fine.” The son, a young omega elf with dark grey-ish hair—almost black but not— said, reassuring his mother.
“Okay, but remember tomorrow is your birthday, so don’t stay out too late, Elyon.” She said with concern, but accepting the fact that his son was going out.
“Yeah. I will.” Elyon said with a smile, leaving a kiss on his mother’s cheek. “Love you, mom.”
“Love you too, honey. Have a good time.” She was with a smile and then shooed his son away so she could finish the dishes.
The young omega left his house that night, heading to a house where a Halloween party was taking place. It was the day before his birthday, the day he would finally turn nineteen. He was nervous, but also excited. Why? Because turning nineteen meant getting the ability to tell who your fated mate was. Elyon Wynfir was not the usual romance type, but he appreciated relationships just like his parents’ one. The sacrifice his father had made at a young adult age of leaving his coven just to be with his mother was inspiring. The love they had for each other was what he wished for.
When he arrived at the house, it was crowded. He greeted some of his friends and took a drink. Even though it was a party with minors, they had clearly managed to slip alcohol into the drinks. Upon looking around in the crowd, he noticed the familiar faces of the Atomic Felines band members. Bramville, being a small town with one school for everyone, made it easy to know people. Westly, Jaden, Raven, and Liam were younger than Elyon, some still in school, but they had formed a band together, and tonight was their first official performance.
Elyon saw Raven and Liam talking to each other, all smiles and giggles. The elf couldn’t help but let out a chuckle. Elyon had always noticed the feelings Liam had for the omega, but was still surprised by how unnoticed they had gone for Raven since the alpha was obvious. Just the way he looked at Raven was enough to tell what his feelings were. Sometimes, Elyon wished someone would look at him that way. The party went smoothly, and then it was time for The Atomic Felines to perform. They got up on a made-up stage in the backyard, the crowd around waiting patiently.
“Hello everyone! We are the Atomic Felines!” Jaden said with a big smile into the microphone. “Let’s party!”
Their performance was great, the band had a lot of talent, and Jaden’s voice was incredible. The way they covered songs to their rock rhythm was amazing. Some people danced and followed the singing. Elyon vibed with them without realizing how much time had passed. Suddenly, someone approached him and said ‘Happy birthday’. The elf looked at the time on his phone. It was already midnight. Some more people approached Elyon, congratulating him on his birthday. The band still played on the back.
After all the congratulations, Elyon’s attention returned to the stage and landed on Liam. Noticing a sudden glow near the alpha’s heart. A glow that wasn’t there before. A glow that made Elyon let out a panicked gasp. A friend beside him asked if he was okay. Elyon nodded and said he was going to leave for the night. His friends wondered why he was leaving mid-performance.
“I have some plans with my parents for my birthday. I need to get some sleep.” Elyon mentioned, and his friends understood, letting him go.
Never in his life had Elyon wanted to get home so quickly. Careful not to wake his parents, he entered the house and headed straight to his room. Once he was saved behind the closed door, everything sank in on him. The image of the glow in Liam Paige’s chest only meant one thing. Since he was a mixed breed between an elf and a wizard, his parents educated him in the ways fate would show. The glowing of a person’s chest right on the heart meant mates. Fated mates.
Liam Paige was Elyon’s fated mate.
Liam was his alpha.
Something fluttered in his chest. Excitement. Happiness. But then, the image of Raven and Liam popped into his mind, breaking his illusion apart. Liam loved another and probably would never love him. Elyon had to do something. He could tell Liam and try to get his attention, or…Or hide his scent from the alpha. That way, he wouldn’t realize they were mates.
Sneaking into his father’s study, Elyon looked through spellbooks for a way to hide his scent from the alpha. Book after book, he looked for the perfect spell. Until he finally managed to find the perfect spell. He would need to gather a few things, but it wouldn’t be difficult at all. At times like that, Elyon was grateful that his father had taught him how to use his magic from a very young age, which had helped him become an expert today.
With Liam’s nineteenth birthday coming up in a few months, Elyon put his plan in motion, and a few weeks later. The spell had been successfully placed on himself. His scent basically gone for everyone. To some, he looked like a mere beta now. Word got around fast in the small town of Bramville. Elyon Wynfir was a beta. Elyon felt proud of how successful he had been, but deep down, he felt sad about having to suppress his second gender. But it was the best way to keep his scent gone.
Gone for Liam Paige not to notice him.
SOME MONTHS LATER
Today was an exciting day for Liam. The blonde alpha had finally turned nineteen. The age when you could tell who your fated mate was. And Liam had someone in mind, someone whom he had been in love with for years, but waited until his birthday to finally make a move. Because for him, Raven Powell was for sure going to be his fated mate. He couldn’t wait to smell his scent and confirm his suspicions. Of course, Raven would not know of him yet, since the omega was a year and a half younger than him. But Liam had no problem; he was willing to wait for Raven to turn nineteen and for him to realize they were fated to each other.
As the day passed by, Liam felt impatient to know if Raven was his omega. Waiting for night to fall felt like torture. Why wait for the night? Because the party he had prepared to celebrate with his friends was then. Meanwhile, the day was spent celebrating with his family. Having a twin sister forced him to have two different celebrations on the day of his birthday, and turning nineteen didn’t make a difference.
“So, are you excited to find your mate?” Lois, his twin sister, asked with curiosity.
“Absolutely. But I don’t think I needed to be nineteen to know.” He mentioned, making his sister more curious.
“Why? Do you have an idea who your mate is, twin bro?” She asked.
“I do.” Liam nodded.
“Who is it?” Lois asked again
“It’s confidential. I’m not telling you.” The alpha said with a grin.
“Wow. You are so mean. We shared the same womb, and now you keep secrets from me?” The woman said in a dramatic tone, overreacting as she usually did when she wanted to make her brother feel bad for not spelling the tea.
“You are so dramatic. Don’t use the shared womb trick on me, Lois.” Liam said with a chuckle.
“Well, I tried.” The woman said, defeated, and then continued. “Anyways, if you do find your mate. You have to let me know.”
“Like you would tell me right away if you found yours.” Liam said with an arched brow.
“I would. Absolutely, because that’s what siblings do.” Lois said with a huff.
The celebration with the family had gone well. Night finally came, and Liam put on his best outfit to impress Raven. By the time he arrived at the party place, his heart was racing with nerves and excitement. Upon entering the place, the guests were already there. His senses were alert to the scents around the room. As he walked further in, he received congratulations from everyone. With a smile on his face, Liam thanked them, but his eyes wandered around the room, looking for a single person.
“Liam!” The alpha heard a familiar voice coming from behind, followed by arms that wrapped around him for a hug.
Liam trembled at the touch and took a deep sniff in the air. Expecting a scent coming from the omega hugging him from behind. Nothing. Perhaps he had to be closer to scent him. The alpha turned around, taking Raven in his arms in a hug. With how close they were, Liam took another sniff at the omega. Still nothing.
“Happy birthday Liam!” The omega said with a big smile after breaking the hug apart. Liam tried to take another sniff of his scent, but got nothing.
‘Not mate.’ His animal self confirmed in his mind, breaking the alpha’s heart in the process. A tumult of emotions began to reach him.
“Thank you, Rae.” The alpha said, hiding all those feelings behind a smile. It was his birthday, and he had to be in his best behavior. But deep down, it still bothered him.
If Raven was not his mate, then who?
Liam had a million questions, but one look at Raven made them go away. That smile that made him fall in love was all he needed to reassure himself that he didn’t need a fated bond to mate with Raven. He was not going to give up.
Raven was going to become his mate one day.
PRESENT DAY
It had been another successful Sun Festival in the Bramville pride. The Atomic Felines were the closing performance. The crowd was vibing with the show, and everyone was having a great time. But Elyon Wynfir’s eyes were focused on a single person on the stage, Liam. The omega couldn’t help being hypnotized by him. Liam was an attractive man with his blonde hair, green eyes, strong jaw, and that warm, smooth, sweet yet earthy aroma of sandalwood that drove Elyon crazy when he stepped close to him.
The scent of his fated mate.
A mate that he was never going to bond with.
A mate that had eyes for one omega.
But that omega was not him.

The concert came to a close, and the band stepped off the stage. As usual, they gathered to talk about the performance and how well it had gone. It was their routine. Wes and Jaden said goodbye to their friends, leaving Liam alone with Raven. They talked about how great the concert had been and how they gathered a lot of new crowd their way. The night was still young, and Liam didn’t have any plans in mind, so he decided to go for it and asked Raven to hang out.
“Do you want to go for a drink to celebrate?” Liam asked with a smile to his friend—and crush.
“Sorry, Liam. I already have plans with Erik.” Raven gave him an apologetic smile. Something broke inside Liam. All Raven talked about lately was Erik this and Erik that. All his free time was spent with him, and it annoyed him. But he didn’t show it. He acted calm and relaxed on the outside, while inside, he was pissed.
“Oh. I see. Another day then?” The alpha asked with a fake smile.
“Sure.” His omega friend answered and then said goodbye, leaving Liam alone behind the stage.
Liam gathered his things and walked to his apartment in the pride grounds. Full of disappointment, but also anger. For years, he had been in love with Raven, but not a single time had the omega noticed or reciprocated his feelings. He went years seeing him date other people, suffering every time. Waiting patiently for his time. But now, that alpha had shown up. Erik ruined everything for him. But Raven deserved better. Better than that straight alpha. Raven deserved him. Tired of waiting, Liam made up his mind. He was not going to let Erik take him away. Not anymore. Raven was his. He was going to confess his feelings to Raven.
‘That’s a bad idea. He is not our mate.’ Liam’s animal self, Levi, said in his mind.
‘Quiet, Levi. You’ll see. He is going to accept my feelings. I know it.’ Liam reassured his animal self, confident that his confession was going to work.
But sadly, what he expected didn’t come true.
