Chapter 1

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FAMILY

At nineteen, Nuella Smith had already learnt that life rarely followed the plans people made for it.

She had graduated from the polytechnic at seventeen with a National Diploma, an achievement her mother still mentioned with pride whenever relatives came visiting. While most people expected her to immediately find a job or continue with another academic programme, Nuella had chosen a different path. Fashion had always fascinated her—the precision of a well-fitted garment, the transformation of an ordinary piece of fabric into something beautiful, and most importantly, the possibility of building something that would eventually carry her name.

She was therefore spending the year at a fashion academy in Lagos, undergoing an upgrade and taking her craft more seriously than ever.

Her family lived a fairly simple life. Her father, Mr. Smith, was a car engineer, hardworking and reserved, while her mother, Beatrice, sold thrift clothes to support the family. They were not wealthy, but they were comfortable enough to provide for their children and, above everything else, they were close.

Nuella was the only daughter and the last child.

Andrew, her eldest brother, was twenty-four and had already completed university. He was currently serving his country through the NYSC programme. James, twenty-two, was still in university and remained the most playful member of the family. Between the three siblings, there was the usual mixture of arguments, teasing and affection that came with growing up together.

As far as Nuella knew, her family was complete.

She was wrong.

It was a warm afternoon in July when her father asked everyone to sit down in the living room.

Nuella noticed the seriousness on his face almost immediately.

Her mother sat quietly beside him, her hands folded in her lap. Andrew had just returned from his place of primary assignment and was standing near the window, while James sat opposite their parents, unusually silent.

Nuella looked from one person to another.

"What's going on?"

Her father didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he gestured for her to sit.

"Come and sit down, Nuella."

She obeyed, though the uneasy feeling in her stomach only grew stronger.

Her father took a deep breath.

"There is something I should have told you and your brothers a long time ago."

Nuella glanced at Andrew and James. Neither of them seemed to know what was coming.

Mr. Smith lowered his eyes for a moment before continuing.

"Before I married your mother, I had two sons."

The words settled heavily over the room.

Nuella stared at him.

"Two sons?"

"Yes."

For several seconds, she said nothing. Her eyes moved slowly to her mother, hoping perhaps she had misunderstood.

"Mummy?"

Beatrice reached for her hand.

"I knew about them, my dear."

Nuella's brows drew together. "You knew?"

Her mother nodded.

"I found out a long time ago."

Nuella looked back at her father. "Then why didn't anybody tell us?"

"It wasn't an easy thing to explain," he replied quietly. "I was young. Their mother and I separated, and over the years we lost contact. I made mistakes, Nuella. There are things I wish I had done differently."

Andrew finally spoke. "Where are they now?"

"In Abuja."

"And they know about us?"

"They know about me now."

Her father's voice became softer.

"Their mother was seriously ill. Before she died, she asked them to find their father. Somehow, they were able to trace me."

The room became silent again.

Nuella felt a strange mixture of emotions. She was shocked, but beneath the shock was something else—curiosity.

She had two brothers.

Two grown men whose names she had never heard until that afternoon.

"How old are they?" she asked.

"Vincent is twenty-nine. Damilare is twenty-seven."

James let out a quiet breath.

"So Dad has two sons older than Andrew?"

Mr. Smith nodded.

Nuella almost smiled at the absurdity of it, but the expression disappeared when she saw her father's face.

This wasn't a joke.

There was genuine regret in his eyes.

"Are they coming here?" she asked.

"They want to meet the family."

"When?"

"Today."

Nuella's heart skipped.

Today.

She had barely processed the information when the sound of a vehicle stopping outside drew everyone's attention.

Andrew walked towards the window.

"They're here."

Nuella remained seated for another moment before eventually standing.

She didn't know what she expected to see.

When she stepped outside, two men were already approaching the house.

The first was tall, composed and impeccably dressed. There was something unmistakably confident about the way he carried himself. The second man walked beside him with a more relaxed expression, occasionally exchanging a few words with his brother.

Their eyes met with Mr. Smith's.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then the taller man spoke.

"Dad."

Mr. Smith's expression changed.

He walked towards him.

"Vincent."

The two men embraced.

It was not dramatic. There were no carefully prepared words, no attempt to explain thirty years in a single conversation. There was simply the quiet emotion of a father finally standing before a son he had lost contact with many years ago.

When they separated, the younger man stepped forward.

"Dad."

Mr. Smith pulled him into another embrace.

"Damilare."

Nuella watched from a short distance.

These were strangers, yet they were family.

Damilare turned towards Andrew first.

"You must be Andrew."

Andrew smiled faintly and extended his hand.

"Yes."

"I'm glad to finally meet you."

They shook hands before Damilare turned to James.

"And you are James."

James laughed. "You've done your research."

Damilare smiled. "We had to."

Then Vincent looked towards Nuella.

His expression softened.

"And this must be Nuella."

She nodded.

"Yes."

He studied her face for a moment before smiling.

"Our little sister."

Something about the words touched her unexpectedly.

Nuella had spent nineteen years being the only girl in the family. She had never imagined there would suddenly be two older brothers standing in front of her.

Damilare opened his arms.

"Come here."

She laughed softly before stepping forward.

He hugged her warmly.

"It's good to finally meet you."

Nuella smiled. "It's good to meet you too."

From that moment, the awkwardness slowly began to disappear.

They went inside, talked, ate together and began filling in pieces of a family history that had been separated for years. Vincent spoke about his life in Abuja and the company he had built, while Damilare talked about technology, university and the work he was involved in. Andrew asked questions about their childhood, and James, true to his nature, eventually turned the conversation into jokes.

Their mother watched everything quietly.

She had initially feared what the revelation might do to her family, but as she watched Vincent and Damilare interact with their father, something inside her softened.

They were not outsiders.

They were her husband's sons.

And now, whether she had expected it or not, they were part of her family too.

By the end of the evening, Nuella found herself sitting beside Vincent and Damilare as though they had known one another for much longer than a single day.

Vincent looked at her.

"We'll come back next weekend."

Nuella smiled.

"You don't have to."

"We know."

Damilare laughed. "But we want to."

Nuella shook her head, smiling.

For the first time in years, the Smith household felt different.

Larger.

Fuller.

There were new voices in the house, new stories to learn and new relationships to build.

Nuella didn't know what the future held for them.

She only knew that the family she had always believed was complete had somehow become bigger.

And perhaps, she thought that night as she lay in bed, some families were not meant to be discovered all at once.

Some were found slowly.

Some were found after years.

And sometimes, the people who arrived unexpectedly became the people you could never imagine living without.
