Chapter 1: The Return
The rain had been falling for hours.
Marinette stood beside the window, watching the drops race down the glass. She held an old photograph tightly in her hand.
A photograph she had promised herself she would never look at again.
In it, she was smiling beside a boy she once loved more than anything.
On the back, written in faded ink, were five words:
“I’ll come back for you.”
Marinette slowly closed her eyes.
“That was a lie,” she whispered.
Three years had passed since he left.
Three years since the goodbye.
Three years since Marinette had learned that promises could hurt more than words.
Her phone suddenly rang.
She almost ignored it.
Then she saw the message.
Unknown: I'm back.
Marinette froze.
Her heart began beating faster.
Another message appeared.
Unknown: We need to talk.
She stared at the screen, unable to breathe properly.
There was only one person who could make her feel this way.
The person she had spent three years trying to forget.
Her first love.
Her biggest heartbreak.
The boy who had promised he would return.
Marinette's fingers trembled as she typed:
Marinette: Who is this?
The reply came almost instantly.
Unknown: You already know.
Her heart sank.
Before she could respond, someone knocked on her bedroom door.
“Marinette?” her mother called. “Someone is here to see you.”
Marinette frowned.
“Who?”
There was a pause.
Then her mother answered.
“A boy.”
Marinette's phone slipped from her hand.
She slowly walked toward the door.
Every step made her heart beat harder.
She opened it.
And there he stood.
Older.
Different.
But those eyes were exactly the same.
The boy she had loved.
The boy who had broken her heart.
The boy who had promised to come back.
He looked at her silently.
Then he said the words Marinette had spent three years wishing she would never hear again.
“I kept my promise.”
Marinette stared at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“You're three years late.”
He lowered his gaze.
“I know.”
And for the first time, Marinette realized something terrifying.
Maybe she had never stopped loving him.
