Chapter 2
I couldn't stop thinking about Daniel.
It was ridiculous.
I had known him for less than an hour, yet somehow, he had managed to occupy my thoughts more than my entire lecture that afternoon.
"She's the one."
Those words kept repeating in my head.
Who was he talking to?
And why did he look at me when he said them?
I tried to convince myself that I had misunderstood him, but something inside me refused to believe that.
By the time I reached the library, I had already decided I wasn't going to think about him anymore.
I found a quiet table near the window and opened my books.
For the next thirty minutes, everything was fine.
Then someone pulled out the chair opposite me.
I looked up.
Daniel.
I stared at him.
"Are you following me?"
He smiled.
"Of course not."
"Then why are you here?"
He glanced around the library.
"To study."
"There are plenty of other seats."
"And this one was available."
I sighed and looked back at my book.
"You're annoying."
"I've been told that before."
I tried to ignore him.
For a few minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then Daniel said quietly, "You shouldn't be alone after dark."
I looked up.
"Why?"
He hesitated.
"No reason."
"That's not an answer."
"I just think you should be careful."
I studied his face.
There was something different about him now. The playful expression was gone.
"You know something about me, don't you?"
He didn't answer.
"Daniel."
He finally looked at me.
"What makes you think that?"
"The way you reacted when I told you my name. The phone call. Everything."
He leaned back in his chair.
"You're asking too many questions."
"And you're avoiding all of them."
For a moment, we simply stared at each other.
Then he smiled again.
"You really don't trust people, do you?"
"Should I trust you?"
His smile disappeared.
"No."
The answer surprised me.
Before I could say anything, his phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed immediately.
He stood up.
"I have to go."
"Who is it?"
He slipped the phone into his pocket.
"Someone I can't ignore."
Then he walked away.
I watched him leave.
Something wasn't right.
I didn't know what Daniel was hiding.
But I was going to find out.
Even if he didn't want me to.
