CHAPTER ONE — A CHILDHOOD I NEVER ASKED FOR
I was just a child when I first began to understand that life was not always going to be easy.
I did not choose the family I was born into. I did not choose the circumstances that surrounded my childhood. I only knew that I wanted to feel safe, loved, and accepted like every other child.
But as I grew older, I began to see things that I did not fully understand as a child.
My mother’s life was complicated. There were different people coming into our lives, and sometimes I was taken to places that I did not understand. At that age, I could not explain what was happening. I only knew that something about my childhood felt different.
There were moments when I wished I could simply be a normal child.
I wanted to laugh without worrying about what was happening around me. I wanted to feel protected. I wanted to believe that home was a place where nothing could hurt me.
But life slowly taught me that not every home feels like home.
As the years passed, I began to experience things that changed the way I saw myself and the people around me.
There were times when I felt unwanted.
There were times when I felt judged for things that were never my fault.
And there were times when I wondered why I had to carry so much pain while I was still so young.
I did not have the words to explain everything I was feeling.
So I kept many things inside.
I smiled when I needed to smile.
I stayed quiet when I wanted to speak.
And I learned how to continue living even when I did not understand why life had become so difficult.
My childhood was not the childhood I had imagined.
But even then, there was a small part of me that still hoped things would become better.
I did not know what the future had in store for me.
I only knew that I was tired of being defined by the things I had never chosen.
I had been rejected, judged, misunderstood, and hurt in ways I could hardly explain.
Yet somehow, I was still here.
Maybe I did not have all the answers.
Maybe I did not even know where my life was going.
But somewhere deep inside me, there was still a small voice whispering:
“Keep going, Vanessa. Your story is not over.”
And so, despite everything I had been through, I chose to face another day.
I was still here.
And that was enough to begin again.
