Chapter 1

By the time Yelena reached the river, the rain had turned the city into a smear of black asphalt and reflected light. She kept her hood low as she crossed the last intersection, one hand in her coat pocket, the other holding a black umbrella that was doing very little against the wind.

The warehouse waited beyond the rows of shuttered businesses, exactly where the address had placed it.

It was the cars that bothered her.She stopped beneath the awning of a closed café and looked across the street without appearing to look.

Two vehicles had been mentioned in her instructions.

There were four.

A black sedan sat beside the warehouse entrance, an unmarked SUV behind it, and a delivery van was parked half on the curb. Farther down the street, another car idled beneath a dead streetlamp.

Yelena checked her phone. No messages.

Her instructions had been simple: go alone, deliver the package, leave.

The last part had always been understood rather than spoken. Couriers weren't supposed to become involved in the business they carried.

They were supposed to arrive, hand something over, and disappear before anyone decided to remember their face.

She crossed the street anyway.

The warehouse door opened before she reached it. A broad-shouldered man in a dark coat stepped outside and looked her over.

"You're the courier."

"That depends who's asking."

His expression hardened. "Come inside.

"Yelena glanced past him at the darkness beyond the entrance. "You've got more security than I was told to expect."

"Plans change."

"Usually before I arrive."For a moment he simply stared at her.

Then he stepped aside.

Yelena entered.

The warehouse smelled of wet concrete, oil, and something metallic beneath it. Crates lined one wall, and several men stood around the loading area with the practiced stillness of people who were armed and wanted everyone to know it without having to say so.

She counted six before the doors shut behind her. Her fingers brushed the package beneath her coat.

Still there.

She had no idea what was inside the small black case. She knew only that it had passed through three sets of hands before reaching hers and that the man who gave it to her had repeated the same instruction twice.

Don't open it.

Yelena had no intention of doing so.

The lights went out.Someone grabbed her arm.She twisted hard, drove her elbow into a rib, and heard a curse. Another man came at her from the side. She ducked, caught his wrist, and sent him into a steel support. A hand seized the back of her coat before she could move again. She drove her heel down, broke free, and reached instinctively for the knife beneath her sleeve.

"Enough."

The voice was quiet enough that everyone heard it.

The lights came back on.

Yelena stood with one hand inside her coat and three men between her and the exit.

A gun was aimed at her chest.

At the far end of the warehouse stood a man she hadn't noticed when she'd entered.

He was dressed in a black suit, immaculate despite the weather outside. Dark hair, strong jaw, straight nose, severe mouth. Nothing about him was particularly remarkable until she looked at his eyes.

Calm.

Not the false calm of someone trying to appear in control.

He simply was.

One of the men moved toward her. Yelena withdrew her hand slowly. He searched her and removed the knife from her sleeve, then another from her boot and a third from inside her coat.

"That's excessive," he muttered.

"Occupational hazard."

The man in the suit looked toward the table. The black case had been taken from her during the struggle.

"Open it."Yelena's gaze followed it.

"My instructions were to deliver it unopened."His eyes returned to her.

"Open it."

She considered refusing.

Then she looked at the gun pointed at her and decided she could postpone her principles. The case clicked open.Inside lay a black leather ledger. The man in the suit picked it up himself. He opened the cover and read the first page without expression. Names. Dates. Ports. Financial institutions. Numbers beside entries she didn't understand. He turned another page, then another.

The room had become noticeably quieter.

Yelena watched him instead of the ledger. Men like him were usually easy to identify. They filled rooms with noise because they needed everyone to understand their importance. This man didn't bother. The others watched him before they moved, waited for him before they spoke.

He closed the ledger.

"Who gave you this?"

"A client."

"Name."

"I don't give out client information."

The man beside him stepped forward. He was older, composed, and carried himself with the controlled confidence of someone accustomed to extracting answers.

"Your name."

"Nadia."

"Last name?"

"Volkov."His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Is that your real name?"Yelena smiled.

"Do you make a habit of asking strangers that?"The man glanced toward the man in the suit.

The stranger said nothing. That silence was becoming more interesting than the questions. The older man returned his attention to her.

"I'm Slade. You were hired to deliver the ledger. We need to know who hired you and what you were told."

"You've already got the ledger."

"We're not asking about the ledger."Yelena held his gaze.

"Then you're asking the wrong person."Slade studied her for a moment before looking toward the man beside him. He turned another page.

"How long have you been working as a courier?"

"Long enough."

"Who do you work for?"

"People who pay me."His eyes lifted from the ledger. For the first time, Yelena felt as though he was actually looking at her rather than simply assessing the situation.

"What were you told about the package?"

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"Only where to take it."Victor closed the ledger.

"Take her upstairs."Yelena's attention sharpened.

"Am I being arrested?"

"No," Slade said.

"Then I assume I'm being detained."

"Temporarily."

"That's a reassuring choice of word."

She allowed the men to move her toward the staircase, but as she reached the first step, she looked back.the man beside slade was still standing beside the table. The ledger lay closed beneath his hand.He wasn't looking at it anymore.

He was looking at her.

Yelena held his gaze for a second before turning away. She had delivered the package.

As far as she was concerned, the job should have ended the moment the case left her hands. Instead, she was being taken upstairs by armed men while a stranger examined the identity she'd given them.

That was the part she didn't like.

Not the guns. Not the locked doors.

It was the fact that they had asked for her name before they had asked why the ledger mattered.

By the time the door closed behind her, Yelena had already made a decision.

Nadia Volkov was going to have to survive the night.

And if 'he' intended to find out who she really was, he was going to have to work for it.
