Chapter One
The De Luca mansion had never looked more alive.
Warm golden lights spilled across the grand halls, reflecting off crystal chandeliers and polished marble floors. Soft music floated through the air, mingling with the sound of laughter, clinking glasses, and cheerful conversations.
Tonight, the mansion wasn't simply hosting a party.
It was celebrating Aria Moretti's third birthday.
The little girl stood at the center of the garden in a tiny ivory dress, her dark curls bouncing around her shoulders as she laughed.
A small golden crown sat crookedly on her head.
And beside her was an eight-year-old boy who looked far too serious for a birthday party.
Alex De Luca.
"Aria, wait!"
Alex chased after her as she ran across the grass, her tiny shoes barely keeping up with her excitement.
"Alex! Catch me!"
"I'm trying!" he complained, laughing despite himself.
Aria suddenly stopped and turned around.
Alex nearly bumped into her.
She giggled.
"You lost!"
"I let you win."
"No!"
"Yes."
"No!"
Alex crossed his arms with an exaggeratedly offended expression.
Aria stared at him for a moment before bursting into laughter again.
Alex couldn't help smiling.
From a short distance away, their mothers watched the two children with amusement.
Isabella De Luca stood beside Elena Moretti, holding a glass of champagne in one hand while watching her son and Aria play.
"They look inseparable," Isabella said warmly.
Elena smiled.
"They've been like that since Aria could walk."
The two women exchanged an affectionate look.
Neither of them knew how much that little bond would mean in the years to come.
Across the garden, several important businessmen, investors, and powerful figures from Milan's underground world had gathered.
To the outside world, the De Lucas and Morettis were simply two extraordinarily successful families.
But behind the expensive suits, elegant smiles, and luxury cars, there was another world.
A world built on power.
Money.
Loyalty.
And secrets.
At the center of it all stood Valentino De Luca.
The man everyone respected.
The man everyone feared.
Yet tonight, he wasn't the feared figure of the underworld.
He was simply a father enjoying his daughter's birthday.
Valentino stood near the terrace with his oldest friend and business partner, Matteo Moretti.
Several businessmen surrounded them, laughing and discussing their latest ventures.
Valentino glanced toward the garden.
His eyes immediately found his son.
Alex was now sitting on the grass while Aria tried to place her tiny birthday crown on his head.
Valentino chuckled.
"Looks like my son has already found his boss."
The men around him laughed.
Matteo shook his head.
"Don't encourage her."
Valentino turned toward his friend with an amused smile.
"Why not? She already has him wrapped around her little finger."
Matteo laughed.
"She's my daughter. Of course she does."
One of the businessmen standing beside them raised his glass.
"You two have been partners for years now. It's rare to see a friendship like yours survive this long."
Valentino smiled and looked at Matteo.
"Friends?"
There was a playful glint in his eyes.
"At the moment, yes."
Matteo raised an eyebrow.
"What do you mean, at the moment?"
Valentino laughed softly.
He glanced toward the garden again.
Aria was holding Alex's hand now, happily showing him something she had found near the flowers.
Valentino pointed toward the children.
"But that may change very soon."
Matteo followed his gaze.
Valentino looked back at him with a teasing smile.
"Right now, we're just friends."
He paused.
"But soon enough, Matteo..."
His smile widened.
"We're going to become family."
The men around them laughed.
Matteo stared at his friend for a moment before shaking his head.
"You're planning too far ahead, Valentino."
"Maybe."
Valentino lifted his glass.
"But look at them."
Matteo looked toward his daughter.
His little three-year-old princess was laughing beside Valentino's eight-year-old son.
For a moment, all the noise around him seemed to disappear.
The powerful businessman.
The feared man of the underground world.
The man who had survived countless battles and dangerous deals.
He was simply a father watching his little girl play.
Matteo smiled.
Then he placed a hand on Valentino's shoulder and gave it a friendly pat.
"We've been friends for so many years, my brother."
His eyes remained on the children.
"But I suppose..."
He smiled.
"Maybe we won't be just friends anymore."
Valentino laughed and pulled him into a brief embrace.
"That's what I'm saying."
Behind them, Isabella and Elena watched the two men with knowing smiles.
Isabella leaned closer to Elena.
"Those two have already decided the future."
Elena laughed softly.
"Apparently."
The women turned their attention back toward the children.
Alex had finally allowed Aria to place the tiny crown on his head.
He looked ridiculous.
Aria was delighted.
She clapped her little hands.
"Pretty!"
Alex rolled his eyes.
"I'm not pretty."
Aria giggled.
"Pretty Alex!"
Everyone nearby laughed.
Even Valentino couldn't hold back his laughter.
For that one evening, there were no enemies.
No threats.
No bloodshed.
No fear.
Only family.
Friendship.
Laughter.
And two children who had no idea that their lives were about to change forever.
The candles on Aria's birthday cake flickered gently as everyone gathered around the long table.
"Come on, princess!" Elena encouraged, smiling at her daughter. "Blow the candles."
Aria looked at the three tiny candles in front of her.
She squeezed her eyes shut.
Alex stood beside her, watching with a small smile.
"Make a good wish," he whispered.
Aria opened one eye.
"What wish?"
Alex leaned closer.
"If I tell you, it won't come true."
Aria frowned thoughtfully.
Then she closed her eyes again and blew as hard as she could.
The candles went out.
Everyone around the table clapped and cheered.
"Happy birthday, Aria!"
Aria's little face lit up.
Alex immediately grabbed the cake knife.
"I'll help."
"You'll help?" Valentino laughed from behind them. "You mean you'll eat."
Alex looked offended.
"I won't!"
Isabella laughed.
"That's exactly what you said last year."
Everyone laughed again.
Alex carefully cut a small piece of cake and held it toward Aria.
"Here."
Aria opened her mouth and took a bite.
Then, without warning, she scooped a little cream from the cake and smeared it across Alex's cheek.
The entire table burst into laughter.
Alex froze.
He slowly touched his cheek.
"Aria!"
She giggled and ran away.
"Come back!"
Alex chased after her through the garden.
Valentino watched them with a smile.
For a few precious minutes, the mansion was filled with nothing but laughter.
Then—
His phone vibrated.
Once.
Valentino glanced at the screen.
His smile disappeared.
He stepped away from the table and answered.
"Talk."
There was a brief silence.
His expression slowly hardened.
"Are you certain?"
Another pause.
"How many?"
Valentino's eyes moved toward the mansion entrance.
"Keep watching them. Don't make a move until I say so."
He ended the call.
"Valentino?"
Matteo's voice came from behind him.
Valentino turned.
Matteo was watching him carefully.
"What happened?"
Valentino slipped the phone into his pocket.
"Nothing."
Matteo didn't believe him.
"You don't look like a man who just heard nothing."
Valentino forced a faint smile.
"Enjoy your daughter's birthday."
Matteo studied his friend's face for another second.
Then he nodded.
"Fine."
Valentino turned back toward the garden.
Alex had caught Aria.
She was laughing as he carried her back toward the table, complaining that she had cheated.
For a moment, Valentino simply watched them.
His son.
His friend's daughter.
His family.
His gaze softened.
Whatever had happened on that phone call could wait.
Tonight was Aria's birthday.
He wouldn't let anything ruin it.
---
Outside the mansion gates, however, the night was beginning to change.
A black car slowly came to a stop.
Then another.
And another.
Their headlights disappeared as the engines were switched off.
Inside the first car, a man lowered his phone.
"Everyone is inside."
A voice came through the phone.
"Good."
The man looked toward the brightly lit mansion in the distance.
"Do we move now?"
There was a pause.
Then—
"Not yet."
His eyes narrowed.
"Wait until the party is at its peak."
Inside the mansion, nobody noticed.
The music continued.
The laughter continued.
And little Aria continued playing beside Alex...
completely unaware that the night was already moving toward them.
