Chapter 1: the Blueprint clash
The air in Mr. Harrison’s classroom smelled of stale coffee, dry-erase markers, and pure academic panic. Maya Lin gripped her mechanical pencil so tightly her knuckles turned white. As a junior who treated architectural drafting like a sacred art form, she had spent three weeks crafting a meticulous, color-coded binder for the City Youth Innovation Showcase. Her goal was simple: win the municipal grant, build a sustainable community center model, and secure her academic legacy.
Then, the door banged open.
"Sorry I'm late, traffic on Fourth Street was an absolute dystopian nightmare," Leo Vance announced, sauntering in with a messy mop of curls, a half-eaten granola bar, and a backpack that looked like it had survived a war zone.
Mr. Harrison didn’t even look up from his grading. "Ah, perfect. Leo, glad you could join the land of the living. Maya, meet your partner."
Maya froze. Leo Vance? The resident chaos-gremlin of the school’s digital media department? The guy who coded rogue holographic art installations in the hallways just for fun, completely ignoring school property codes?
"Excuse me?" Maya stood up, her pristine binder clutched to her chest. "Mr. Harrison, there's been a mistake. My project requires structural integrity, zoning compliance, and exact measurements. Leo’s idea of structural integrity is duct-taping a tablet to a cardboard box."
Leo grinned, leaning against her desk and flashing a dimpled smile. "Ouch, Lin. Duct tape is structural genius, first of all. Second of all, Mr. Harrison paired us because you have the brains of an urban planner and I have the kinetic magic to make people actually look at your buildings. We’re destiny, baby."
"We’re a disaster," Maya muttered, though her cheeks betrayed her with a sudden, traitorous flush.
