Chapter 1 - Caden’s POV – Many Years Ago
Caden’s POV – Many Years Ago
Mrs. Viola took the four of us to the city park; my little sister, Sophie, and our friend, Tim, had to stay home sick. We were six years old, so the two girls, Kiara and Kimmy, were tossing a ball around while Kyler and I had a sword fight not too far away.
“Kids,” we heard Mrs. Viola call out, “come take a little break.”
We ran over to the bench where Mrs. Viola was sitting. She poured everyone a small cup of juice and pulled out four chocolate-covered fruit bars.
“Go ahead and eat up, your moms sent these,” she said with a smile.
I walked over to the next bench and sat down to eat my chocolate in peace. Kimmy sat on the other end of the bench and beamed at me. She wore her long, black hair in two braided pigtails, and her blue eyes practically glowed against her sun-kissed skin.
When she sat down next to me, I looked at her, and my fruit bar slipped right out of my hand.
“Caden,” Kimmy said sweetly, “you dropped your fruit bar.”
“I know,” I muttered, annoyed with myself.
Kimmy stood up and stepped in front of me.
“You love eating more than I do anyway,” she giggled. “Here, you can have mine,” she said, handing me her fruit bar, which already had a bite taken out of it.
“But you love this too,” I said. “Are you sure?”
She just nodded, smiling. “You can give it back to me someday.”
“I’ll give it back when we grow up and you marry me,” I said.
Kimberly’s smile widened. “It’s a deal, Caden King,” she said, before skipping back over to Mrs. Viola.
