CH 1 A Stranger's Perfect Shadow
By summer, the city had faded behind Valerie’s family, replaced by endless fields, wooded hills, and a blue lake stretching beyond their sprawling ranch. For Valerie, raised among towers and crowded streets, the countryside felt almost unreal—too vast, too quiet, and beautifully unfamiliar.
That morning, she decided to explore it on horseback.
She rode slowly along the edge of the woods, still learning the rhythm of the animal beneath her. The air smelled of grass and pine, and somewhere beyond the trees, the lake flashed between the branches.
Then a gunshot cracked through the stillness.
The horse jolted violently.
Before Valerie could steady herself, it reared, and she slipped hard to the ground. Pain shot through her ankle as the horse bolted toward the trees.
Near the lake, David had been fishing.
The gunshot made him look up. Then came the frightened scream of the horse.
He dropped his fishing tackle and ran.
He found Valerie sitting in the grass, one hand gripping her ankle.
“Are you hurt?”
She nodded.
Without another word, David helped her up and carried her toward the small cabin near the lake. His tackle remained abandoned by the water as he returned for the horse, leading it back and tying it to a tree beside the cabin.
The house was old, weathered by years of sun and rain, but there was something unexpectedly warm about it. Valerie looked around in quiet fascination. She had known grand rooms, polished floors, and city lights, yet somehow this little cabin felt more peaceful than any place she had ever known.
David noticed her looking.
“It’s not much,” he said.
Valerie shook her head.
“It’s beautiful.”
For a moment, neither spoke. Beyond the cabin, the lake stirred beneath the morning light, and the countryside seemed to hold its breath.
Valerie looked at him.
“By the way, I’m Valerie.”
“David.”
It was a simple introduction.
Neither of them knew that, before the summer was over, those two names would become part of a memory neither would easily forget.
