### **CHAPTER 1: THE SEAT BETWEEN TROUBLE**
The rain in London never really stopped.
It hit the tall gothic windows of Hartfield Academy, Year 10 Maths classroom, 8:02 am on a Monday. The radiators were hissing. Everyone in dark navy blazers with the gold lion crest.
Evy Sinclair was early, as always. Rule 1 of being a scholarship girl: you have to be twice as perfect.
Light-brown skin, long wavy dark brown hair tied half up with a black ribbon, white shirt tucked in, plaid skirt, tights, prefect pin already even though she was only Year 10. Her books were lined up perfectly, handwriting perfect.
CeCe Monroe slumped next to her, already chewing gum.
"Girl, Mrs. Evans is in a mood," CeCe whispered, her braids with gold beads clicking. "And you know who hasn't come?"
"I don't care," Evy whispered back, even though she did.
The double doors crashed open.
Cold air and rain came in.
Xavier and Xavirian Knight.
The whole class looked.
Same face. Same height. Same dark wet hair dripping, same navy blazers ruined with black leather jackets over them, same expensive black shoes. Twin sons of the family who built Hartfield in 1826. Everyone at Hartfield knew: don't mess with Knights.
Xavier Knight walked first. He never looked at anyone. Dark eyes, jaw tight, gold chain. He had a Head Boy badge in his pocket but never pinned it. 15, Year 11, bad boy who skipped class, smoked behind the chapel, got in fights, but still got A* when he tried. The teachers were scared of him.
Xavirian Knight walked second. Same face but he smiled. Same bad — football captain, detention every week, flirted with every girl — but charming. He winked at two Year 11 girls and they giggled.
Mrs. Evans sighed. "Boys. You're late. Again."
"Traffic from Kensington," Xavirian said, charming lie.
"Seats. Now. Only seats left are next to Miss Sinclair."
Evy's heart stopped.
There were exactly two empty desks.
One on her left. One on her right.
Xavier didn't ask. He dropped his bag and sat on her left. So close his wet leather jacket touched her blazer. He smelled like rain and expensive cologne. He said nothing. Opened no book.
Xavirian sat on her right, arm brushing hers on purpose.
"Morning, Sinclair," he whispered, low. "You smell like good grades."
"Leave her alone," CeCe hissed.
Evy tried to focus on the board. Mrs. Evans writing equations. But she could feel both of them looking.
Then Xavier — cold Xavier who never talked to anyone — leaned over just enough that only she could hear.
"Evy Sinclair. Scholarship. Year 7 entrance, full marks. Year 9, top in London. You sit front row. You never get detention. You wear your prefect pin even in Maths."
Evy turned, shocked. "How do you —"
"I know everything about this school," he said, dark eyes on hers. "Including you."
Xavirian laughed quietly. "Don't get scared, good girl. My brother's been watching you since Year 7. He just doesn't say it."
"I'm not — I'm not —"
Mrs. Evans clapped. "Miss Sinclair! Since you are top, you will tutor the Knights. They are failing Maths. Every day, 7pm, library. Mandatory."
The whole class gasped.
CeCe grabbed Evy's hand under the desk. "Say no."
But Xavier had already stood, looking down at Evy, his wet hair dripping onto her desk.
"7pm, Sinclair," he said. "Don't be late. Or we'll come find you."
And the bell rang, and the good girl's perfect Hartfield life — the one with no trouble — was suddenly, officially, between two bad boys.
