Chapter 1: The Girl In The Mirror
Lilian had always wondered what people saw when they looked at her.
Some thought she looked intimidating. Others thought she was angry when she was simply quiet. A few assumed she had everything figured out.
They were all wrong.
That morning, Lilian stood in front of the mirror in the small room she had learned to call home.
Her hair was messy. Her eyes were still sleepy. The girl staring back at her didn't look particularly extraordinary.
But Lilian smiled at her reflection.
For a second, she imagined dimples appearing on her cheeks.
She smiled wider.
Nothing.
She laughed quietly at herself.
"Maybe in another life."
Then she picked up her bag and left the room.
Outside, the corridor was already noisy. Doors opened and closed. People called each other's names. Someone was laughing loudly at the other end of the hallway.
Lilian walked through them without saying much.
She had become good at that.
Walking through crowded places while feeling completely alone.
Nobody knew how many things she carried inside that quiet girl.
Nobody knew about the little girl she used to be, or the things her family had gone without. Nobody knew how often she thought about her mother. Nobody knew how badly she wanted to give her a life where she never had to worry about money again.
And nobody knew that behind all her dreams was one simple promise:
Someday, I will make it.
She didn't know exactly how.
She didn't know how long it would take.
She didn't even know who she would become along the way.
But Lilian knew one thing.
She was not going to remain the girl standing in that mirror forever.
She picked up her bag, took one last look at her reflection, and walked toward the door.
Two years.
Just two more years.
Then the chapter would end.
And perhaps, somewhere beyond it, there would be people who understood her.
People who stayed.
People who felt like home.
Until then, Lilian would keep going.
Quietly.
Beautifully.
And entirely on her own terms.
