Chapter 1

Chapter 1 — The Knock at 3:17

The first time the house knocked, nobody was inside.

At least, that was what everyone in Oduka Village believed.

It had been abandoned for twenty-three years.

The house stood at the very end of a narrow red-dirt road, beyond the last streetlight and the final row of small houses. Its windows were black, its walls were covered in stains, and thick vines climbed over the roof like fingers trying to pull it into the ground.

Nobody went there after sunset.

Children were warned not to play near it.

Adults pretended not to be afraid of it.

But twenty-two-year-old Daniel Nwosu had never believed the stories.

Until the night he heard the knock.

Daniel had returned to the village because his grandmother had died.

After the funeral, his mother handed him an old iron key.

“Your grandmother left you something,” she said.

“What?”

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward the window.

“The house.”

Daniel laughed.

“What house?”

His mother's face changed.

“The one at the end of the road.”

The laughter disappeared from Daniel's face.

“Grandma owned that place?”

His mother nodded slowly.

“Don't sleep there.”

“Why?”

“Because she never did.”

That answer stayed in Daniel's mind all evening.

At 11:46 p.m., curiosity defeated fear.

He took a flashlight, the old key, and walked toward the abandoned house.

The village became strangely quiet as he approached.

No dogs barked.

No insects chirped.

Even the wind seemed to disappear.

Daniel unlocked the front door.

It opened by itself.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and something sweet—almost like flowers left too long in a closed room.

His flashlight moved across the walls.

Old photographs hung everywhere.

Daniel stopped.

One photograph showed his grandmother as a young woman.

Beside her stood a little girl Daniel had never seen before.

He moved closer.

Someone had scratched the girl's face out of the photograph.

Then Daniel noticed something worse.

There was another photograph beneath it.

A photograph of Daniel.

His heart stopped.

He picked it up.

It showed him standing in front of the house.

But Daniel was only five years old in the picture.

And beside him stood the same little girl.

A cold sensation moved through his body.

He dropped the photograph.

Then—

Knock.

Daniel froze.

Three slow knocks came from somewhere inside the house.

Knock.

He turned toward the hallway.

Knock.

His flashlight flickered.

Daniel whispered:

“Who's there?”

Silence.

Then a child's voice answered from upstairs.

“Daniel…”

His blood turned cold.

The voice sounded exactly like his grandmother.

Except his grandmother had been dead for three days.

Daniel stepped backward.

The upstairs floor creaked.

Then the voice whispered again.

“Daniel… you finally came home.”

The flashlight went out.

And from the darkness above him came three more knocks.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The clock on the wall suddenly began ticking.

Daniel looked at it.

3:17 a.m.

The house had been waiting for him.
