Prologue - Valie

“I have never killed anyone myself before this...but I have never done anything to prevent people from getting killed as well. So it’s my karma, I guess.” I said, looking down at my hands clasped together on my lap.

“Well you saved me!” Ewan said.

“Uh…you might be the only one I guess.” I said, unable to suppress a smile.

“And the people who were kidnapped.”

“Hmm…”

“Well, then if I go to hell, I will ask them to take your sins and give it to me. I would be happy to take your part of the punishment with mine.” He said with a wink, as he got down on his knees right in front of the chair I was sitting on.

I made a face at him, unable to take in the corny dialogue. He chuckled at that and held my hands, loosening my fingers and interlocking his with mine. Then he paused for a moment and then looked up to me.

“You know this is the best way I can tell you that I love you without actually making you uncomfortable?”

“You don’t make me uncomfortable.” I said in a hurry, worrying he might start crying considering how he did a few days back.

Well, I got shot at the very end. I guess he was seriously going crazy inside his head. He never showed his emotions to anyone, but he cried that day. In front of other people, I saw the tear drop trickle from his cold emotionless eyes. Dai scolded me because I could not help but laugh at Ewan’s confused expression as he wiped his tears and looked at his hand. Like, “Wait. I am crying? Like these are actual tears?”

He was strong, very serious, cold, and unapproachable when he stood among his employees or even if he was just taking a stroll outside. But now we were in my safe house. It was only me and him. And only at times like this I see him do things that me from a few months ago won’t believe. So the crying part was a surprise for me.

Well, even he would not believe it himself. Mr. Ewan Lorenzo, the 5th conglomerate heir in the city is now kneeling in front of the only daughter of the people who he despised since birth.

He looked up at me with a weary smile, as if he just came back from a war he did not think he would win and said,

“Then I guess we have to seal the deal.”

“And how do you suggest we do that?” I asked, my voice showing the urgency because now I need to look for papers and pens that might be back at my office.

“With a kiss.” He said with a small smile.

Oh. So that’s what he was planning to do. Stupid me.

“I can allow a peck.” I said, with a smile, relieved that I don’t need to get up from my chair. The bullet got into my thigh (yeah, the bulletproof vest was useless) and it was just 4 days since the hospital released me. Dai might kill me if the wound opens again. Yeah, again. I am sorry. I just wanted to find a book to read.

“Then a peck it is.” He said and leaned in until his warm lips touched mine and I felt a bit giddy with physical touch for the first time in my life.
