Summary

I thought the trip was the hardest thing I would have to forgive. Then, one night, I saw messages with another girl. One word stayed with me: need. Chapter 4

I thought the hardest part was finding out about the trip.

I was wrong.

After everything that had happened, I tried to move forward.

I had forgiven him.

I wanted to trust him again.

And somewhere inside me, I still believed that what happened was just a mistake—something we could leave behind if we both tried.

But when trust is broken once, you don't suddenly become the same person again.

You become more careful.

You notice things you would have ignored before.

You think twice before believing an explanation.

And sometimes, even when you don't want to doubt someone, your mind starts asking questions on its own.

I didn't want to become that person.

I didn't want to check his phone.

I had never been someone who wanted to go through his private conversations.

But one night, around 4 a.m., something made me look.

I still don't know what exactly pushed me to do it.

Maybe it was the fear I had been carrying since the trip.

Maybe it was simply the feeling that something wasn't completely right.

Whatever the reason was, I checked.

And then I saw messages with another girl.

I read them.

And one line stayed in my mind.

He had said that she had become more than just a habit.

She had become a need.

I don't think he understood what that one word would do to me.

I just sat there, staring at the screen.

I had spent five years believing that I knew where I stood in his life.

Five years of memories.

Five years of conversations.

Five years of being there for each other.

And suddenly, I had one question I couldn't stop asking myself:

If she had become his need, then what was I after five years?

I didn't know how to answer that.

I didn't even know what I wanted him to say.

I was hurt.

Confused.

Angry.

And somehow, still hoping that there was an explanation that would make everything feel normal again.

He eventually admitted that he had been attracted to her.

He regretted it.

He apologized.

He told me that he couldn't imagine his life without me.

He asked me to forgive him.

And I did.

Again.

Maybe people who are looking from the outside would wonder why I kept forgiving him.

Honestly, I wondered that too.

But when you've shared so much of your life with someone, walking away isn't always as simple as saying, “You hurt me, so I'm leaving.”

There were years behind us.

There were families who knew about us.

There were ordinary days that had once felt perfect.

There were memories I couldn't simply erase because something painful had happened.

And there was still love.

A lot of it.

So I stayed.

But this time, something inside me had changed even more.

The first time, I had lost some of my trust.

This time, I started questioning my place in his life.

I wanted to believe his apologies.

I wanted to believe that he understood.

I wanted to believe that nothing like this would happen again.

But wanting to trust someone and actually being able to trust them are two different things.

And I was beginning to learn that the hard way.

He kept telling me that I was important to him.

That he wanted me.

That he couldn't stay away from me.

And part of me wanted to believe every word.

But another part of me kept remembering everything that had happened.

The trip.

The silence.

The hidden truth.

The messages.

The apologies.

The forgiveness.

It felt like I was carrying all of those moments with me every time I tried to trust him again.

I still loved him.

That was the most confusing part.

My heart hadn't stopped loving him just because I had been hurt.

But love was no longer enough to make everything feel safe.

I had forgiven him.

I had stayed.

I had tried.

But somewhere deep inside, I knew that forgiveness could not rebuild trust by itself.

Trust needed time.

Consistency.

Honesty.

And I didn't know how much longer it would take for me to feel safe again.

Maybe that was the real beginning of my struggle.

Not learning how to stop loving him.

But learning how to live with the fact that I could love someone deeply and still feel hurt by them.

And for the first time, I started wondering...

Could love survive when trust no longer felt the same?
