I. The Transaction
Focus: Establish Tony’s rigid, billionaire lifestyle and his desire for “uncomplicated companionship.”
Plot Point: Tony and MJ meet and agree to their arrangement. Contrast Tony’s cold, structured world with MJ’s immediate, vibrant energy.
The penthouse apartment on the 48th floor was a masterclass in architectural silence. The atmosphere inside it was exactly what Tony paid for: silent, predictable, and flawlessly curated. The guests and members suddenly came in and sat on this floor just next to the penthouse’s skyline, insulated from the humid summer heat and the chaotic honking of taxi cabs below. Every surface—from the polished Calacatta marble floors to the custom minimalist cabinetry—was designed to absorb sound, to project an aura of absolute, unshakable control.
Tony stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, a glass of neat scotch resting in his hand. He liked things that had clear terms and conditions. His businesses ran on them; his life did too. He had built an empire on predictability, and that unpredictable variables were liabilities. In his personal life, they were entirely unacceptable. That was exactly why he agreed to this arrangement. It was a transaction and a clean, legally binding, month-to-month agreement for companionship. No messy emotional fallout, noun expected expectations. Just a young, beautiful woman to accompany him to galas, share dinners, and disappear when he needed his space. He checked his Patek Philippe watch. 20:00. She was precisely zero minutes late, which, in Tony’s world, meant she was cutting it close. Right on cue, the private elevator chimed. Then came the storm.
The doors slid open, and the silence of Tony’s perfect world evaporated.
“Oh my god, you will not believe the traffic on the lower level,” a vibrant voice erupted into the foyer, accompanied by the chaotic clatter of oversized shopping bags and the sharp, rhythmic clicking of five-inch stiletto heels.
MJ burst into the room like fireworks detonating in an art gallery. She was a blur of vibrant energy—dressed in a stunning, emerald-green silk dress that looked incredibly expensive but worn with casual defiance. A Gucci handbag slung carelessly over her forearm like a grocery sack.
“I know, I know, I’m cutting it close,” she gasped, completely ignoring the stiff, formal posture Tony had assumed. She dropped the handbag onto his pristine, hand-woven silk rug with a heavy thud.
“But look! They had limited edition ones in stock. I had to bribe the sales associate, which technically means I went a tiny bit over the weekly allowance, but look at the hardware!”
Tony looked down at the Gucci handbag disrupting the monochrome perfection of his living room, then up at MJ. Her long, dark hair was beautifully styled but slightly windblown, and her browneyes sparkled with undeniable, exhausting energy.
“Rough night?” She asked, not a hint of hesitation in her voice. She turned her head, flashing a brilliant, completely unbothered smile.
Tony blinked. People rarely approached him without an invitation, let alone with such casual familiarity.
“Just a quiet one,” he replied; his voice measured.
“Until now.”
MJ let out a bright, melodic laugh that seemed to vibrate through the stiflingly serious room.
“Oh, come on. Quiet is just a polite word for boring. I’m MJ.” She extended her hand; her nails painted a chaotic glittery black that contrasted wildly with the stark minimalist of the bar.
“Tony,” he said, shaking her hand. Her grip was warm and entirely lacking the practiced, deferential stiffness he was used to.
“Well, Tony,” she said, leaning slightly, the scent of expensive perfume and rain swirling around her. “You look like a man who follows all the rules. I make it a habit at least three before midnight.”
In a year later, Dr. Tony hosts lavish parties, clubs and galas in desperate attempt to reunite with his former college student, MJ in order to set up an agreed companionship between the two.
Within ten minutes, Tony’s carefully constructed evening was completely derailed. MJ didn’t talk about politics, market trends, or real estate. Instead, she discussed her talent that’s already remained unhidden to the world, which was vocal performance. He discovers that she’s a singer and vocalist; she can perform in different genres such as pop, jazz, ballad, classical, etc. She also talked to him about how she has slight knowledge of ethics such as what’s good, bad, right or wrong; and philosophy such as ‘the examined life’ and its branches (metaphysics, logic, epistemology, aesthetics). MJ had a wide, clear guess that Tony was a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) holder and studied at a university for around 5-7 years to become a doctor; working as a professor in a community college before. After all those years of a pain in the ass hard work for him; especially when he built an empire and ran his own business, he had become one of the wealthiest men of the city.
For MJ, she was in high maintenance—that much was instantly clear. When the bartender brought her drink, she politely but firmly sent it back because the mint wasn’t slapped correctly to release the oils. She knew exactly what she wanted, exactly how it should be served, and didn’t have an ounce of shame about demanding it. Yet, beneath the whirlwind of her quiet, but vibrant personality, Tony caught glimpses of something entirely genuine. When a waiter tripped nearby, dropping a tray of silverware, the rest of the lounge ignored it with cold, elite indifference. MJ, however, immediately knelt to help gather the scattered forks, offering the embarrassed young man a reassuring wink before sliding back onto her stool. Tony was fascinated. His life was filled with people who wore masks of perfect sophistication. MJ’s charm was raw, unedited, and entirely intoxicating.
“You’re an expensive habit, aren’t you?” Tony murmured, a rare, genuine smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
MJ tilted her glass against his, the crystal chiming softly. “The best luxury always is, Tony. But I promise you, I’m worth the premium tier.”
As they talked into the late hours of the night, Tony found himself thinking about an arrangement. He wanted this vibrant light in his rigid, shadowy world. But as he looked down at her—vibrant, completely unfazed by his wealth, and radiating a warmth that the penthouse hadn’t felt in years—he found himself holding back.
He believed he could compartmentalize it—set the boundaries, pay the allowances, and keep it safely under his control. He had no idea that the chaotic force sitting next to him was about to rewrite every single rule he owned. He had purchased her companionship to make his life easier. He just hadn’t realized that the most expensive thing in his life was about to cost him his control.
