1. THE COMPARISON
Why Your Phone Makes You Hate Your Real Life
You wake up. First thing you do is pick up your phone. Before you brush your teeth, before you greet anyone in your house, you have already compared yourself to ten people.
You went online on social media. One guy just posted his new body after gym — abs, clear skin, veins. Another posted his JAMB score — 320. Another just got admission abroad. Another girl posted her birthday photoshoot — 17 but looks 24. Another posted "soft life" in Lekki, brunch with friends. Another boy posted his new laptop, making money online at 16.
You haven't even stood up from your bed and you already feel behind. Chest tight. Small shame. You lock your phone, but the feeling stays with you while you brush your teeth.
"Everybody is doing better except me."
That feeling is not because you are dull, ugly, or slow. That feeling is because of something called COMPARISON TRAP. And it was designed to make you feel that way so you keep scrolling.
Growing up you compared yourself to people in your street. Your brain was built for the small number. Now you compare yourself to 2 million people every single day on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram. Your brain was never built to handle that much comparison. So it crashes. And when it crashes, it tells you one big lie: "You are not enough. You are late. You are behind."
Let's break that lie into three smaller lies today, so you can see it clearly.
LIE 1: THEY HAVE A PERFECT LIFE AND YOU DON'T.**
Look at that boy with gym body. You don't see that he is also insecure, that he uses pump before photo, that he edits light, that he is fighting with his father at home and his school fees is not yet paid. Look at that girl with clear skin. You don't see the 50 pictures she deleted, the pimple patch under filter, the tears last night because her boyfriend left her on read and her mum shouted at her. Nobody posts their 3am cry. They post their 2pm glow. Nobody posts their family problem. They post their birthday surprise. You are comparing your real life — with dirty room, unwashed plates, NEPA taking light, small data — to their highlight reel. Of course you will feel like you are losing. You are playing an unfair game.
LIE 2: IF YOU GET WHAT THEY HAVE, YOU WILL FINALLY BE HAPPY.
This is the biggest scam of teen life. I thought if I get a new phone, I will be happy. I got it, happy for two days, then I saw someone with iPhone 15 Pro Max and my happiness disappeared. I thought if I get 5 A's in WAEC, I will feel enough. I got it, happy for one day, then someone posted 7 A's with scholarship to Canada. I thought if my skin clears, I will be confident. My skin cleared small, then I started worrying about my hair. Happiness that depends on having more never finishes. The goalpost keeps moving. You will never arrive. You will just keep chasing and feeling empty.
LIE 3: YOU ARE BEHIND.
Behind who? Who set the timetable for life? Who wrote that at 17 you must have clear skin, 6 A's, iPhone, and boyfriend who posts you? At 17, some people are making millions from crypto. Some are still in SS1. Some are pregnant. Some have never kissed. Some lost their mum. Some are still learning to read well. Life is not one race where everyone starts on the same line with same lane. Your path is your path. Your chapter 2 cannot be compared to someone's chapter 20. You are not late. You are on time for your own life.
So what do you actually do? You don't have to go invisible on social media. You will still use it. But you can use it without it draining you.
DAY 1: UNFOLLOW :Open your following list. Unfollow 10 accounts that make you feel down when you are watching their page. Not because you hate them. Because you love your peace. You unfollow 21 accounts — fitness models, luxury girls, academic braggers, couple pages. In 48 hours, your mind became quieter. You are allowed to protect your mind without explanation.
DAY 2: REAL LIFE LIST.** Write good things that happen and make you feel good. Example: "My siblings bought gifts for me." “I won the most puntual student in class”. Your brain needs to see that your life has value social media cannot measure in likes.
You are not behind. You are not ugly. You are not dull. You are a human learning how to be human in a world that shows you fake perfection every day.
YOU ARE ENOUGH TODAY . Not after you get abs. Not after you clear your skin. Not after admission comes. Not after she replies. Not after you make money. Today, with pimples, with small money, with confusion — YOU ARE ENOUGH .
