The man who came from the river
The river was not supposed to speak.
Yet that night, it called his name.
“Eri…”
He stopped walking.
Behind him, the forest was silent.
No insects.
No birds.
Not even the wind moved through the ancient trees.
Eri tightened his grip around the wooden staff in his hand and stared into the darkness ahead. The river lay beyond the trees, its black surface reflecting a moon that seemed far too large.
Again, the voice came.
“Eri…”
This time, it came from the water.
His people had warned him never to answer a voice that came from the river after sunset.
But Eri had never been a man who turned away from the unknown.
He stepped forward.
One foot.
Then another.
The reeds parted.
The river appeared.
And there, standing in the middle of the water, was a man.
Eri froze.
The stranger was impossibly tall. Water flowed around his legs, yet he did not move. His body seemed carved from darkness, while his eyes burned with a strange golden light.
Eri raised his staff.
“Who are you?”
The stranger smiled.
“I am not the question you should be asking.”
The river suddenly began to tremble.
Eri felt the ground beneath his feet shake.
“What do you want?”
The stranger lifted one hand and pointed beyond the river, toward the vast wilderness that stretched farther than Eri's people had ever traveled.
“There is a land waiting for you.”
Eri's expression hardened.
“I have a home.”
“You have a beginning.”
The words struck him harder than any spear.
Behind Eri, distant voices echoed through the forest.
His family.
His people.
They were searching for him.
The stranger's golden eyes remained fixed on his.
“Gather them,” he said. “Take everything you can carry.”
“Why?”
“Because before your journey ends, your name will become the beginning of a kingdom.”
The river exploded.
Eri staggered backward as a wave of water crashed toward him.
Then—
Silence.
He opened his eyes.
The stranger was gone.
Only the moon remained.
And on the surface of the river floated a single object.
A small black stone.
Eri reached down and picked it up.
The moment his fingers touched it, a vision struck him.
A vast settlement.
Fields stretching beneath the sun.
Hunters returning from the forest.
Traders carrying strange goods.
Children running through crowded streets.
Elders gathered beneath sacred trees.
And at the center of it all stood a man wearing the symbols of a king.
But Eri knew the man.
It was his descendant.
His blood.
His future.
Then the vision changed.
Fire.
Warriors running through smoke.
People screaming.
A kingdom surrounded by enemies.
And finally—
A throne standing empty beneath a sacred tree.
Eri dropped the stone.
The vision vanished.
He stood alone beside the river, breathing heavily.
For the first time in many years, fear entered his heart.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for the people who trusted him.
When Eri returned to the settlement before dawn, his wives were waiting.
So were the elders.
One of them stepped forward.
“You were gone all night.”
Eri looked toward the eastern horizon.
The first light of morning was appearing.
“We leave today.”
The elders exchanged confused glances.
“Leave?”
Eri nodded.
“We are going into the wilderness.”
A murmur spread through the gathering.
“For how long?”
Eri looked toward the distant forest.
“I don't know.”
“And where are we going?”
Eri was silent for a moment.
Then he answered:
“To the land that has been waiting for us.”
No one knew it yet.
But that morning marked the beginning of a journey that would change generations.
A journey that would give birth to a kingdom.
A kingdom that would one day be known as Nri.
And somewhere beyond the forest, destiny was already waiting.
