The Night We Met
The rain began at exactly 11:47 p.m.
Not the gentle kind that whispered against windows, but a cold, relentless storm that turned the city into a blur of silver streets and trembling lights.
Ayaan stood beneath the narrow roof of an abandoned train station, staring at the tracks.
His jacket was soaked at the shoulders. His hands were cold, but he barely noticed.
He had been waiting for someone.
Someone who had promised to come.
Someone who had disappeared three years ago.
A distant train horn echoed through the darkness.
Ayaan lowered his eyes.
“Maybe you really aren't coming.”
He smiled bitterly.
Three years.
Three years of unanswered messages.
Three years of wondering whether the memories they shared had meant anything.
And yet, tonight, he had returned to the same place where everything had begun.
The station clock suddenly stopped.
11:59.
Ayaan frowned.
Then the lights went out.
The entire station fell silent.
For several seconds, there was nothing except the sound of rain.
Then—
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming from the opposite end of the platform.
Ayaan's heart stopped.
A figure appeared through the rain.
A girl.
She wore a long dark coat, her hair moving with the wind. She stopped beneath the broken station light, keeping her face hidden in the shadows.
Ayaan stared.
He knew that silhouette.
He knew the way she stood.
He knew the tiny hesitation before she took another step.
His voice came out barely above a whisper.
“...Mira?”
The girl froze.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then she lifted her face.
It was her.
Mira.
The person he had spent three years trying to forget.
And the person he had never truly stopped loving.
Ayaan took one step toward her.
“You came.”
Mira's eyes filled with tears.
“I shouldn't have.”
“Then why did you?”
She looked away.
“Because I wanted to see you one last time.”
The words hurt more than Ayaan expected.
“One last time?”
Mira nodded.
“I have to leave tonight.”
Ayaan's expression changed.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“That's not an answer.”
“It is the only answer I can give you.”
He walked closer.
“Three years, Mira. You disappeared for three years without telling me anything. And now you come back just to say goodbye?”
Her lips trembled.
“You think it was easy for me?”
“Then tell me.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because if I tell you…”
She stopped.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“...you'll come with me.”
Ayaan stared at her.
“And that's so terrible?”
Mira closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I don't want you to lose your life because of me.”
The rain grew heavier.
Ayaan stepped forward until only a few feet separated them.
“You already took three years from me.”
Mira looked at him.
“And I spent every one of those years wishing I could give them back.”
Silence.
Ayaan's anger slowly disappeared.
What remained was the same feeling he had tried so hard to bury.
Love.
Quiet.
Painful.
Unfinished.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver pendant.
Mira's eyes widened.
“You still have it?”
“You gave it to me.”
“I thought you threw it away.”
“I tried.”
A faint, sad smile appeared on his face.
“But I couldn't.”
Mira looked down.
“I wish you hated me.”
“I tried that too.”
“And?”
“I failed.”
Her eyes filled with tears again.
Ayaan gently placed the pendant in her hand.
“You don't have to explain everything tonight.”
Mira looked at him.
“Then what do you want?”
“One honest answer.”
“What?”
“Did you ever stop loving me?”
Mira became completely still.
The question seemed to break something inside her.
She looked toward the dark tracks.
Then back at him.
“No.”
Ayaan's eyes softened.
“That's enough.”
A distant sound suddenly interrupted them.
A car engine.
Mira's expression changed instantly.
“They found me.”
Ayaan turned toward the station entrance.
“Who?”
“I don't have time.”
She grabbed his hand.
For the first time in three years, their hands touched again.
Ayaan looked down at their intertwined fingers.
Neither of them spoke.
Then Mira whispered—
“Run.”
They disappeared into the rain together.
Neither of them knew that this night would change everything.
Neither knew that their reunion was not the end of their story.
It was the beginning.
And somewhere beyond the darkness, a secret was waiting—
one that would force them to choose between the life they wanted...
and the love they could never escape.
