The Hearth‑Watch at Vestur‑Hrimsa: A Jöttnar Pack Tradition
The Lunar Games — Jöttnar Skard
Marking the Eighteenth Winter of Aderyn Eira Garm
Protocol for the Hearth-Watch at Vestur-Hrimsa
The cauldrons are hung over the cedar coals, their steam rising thin and bitter into the freezing dark. Above the timberline, the horns have already sounded. The unshifted youth are on the crags for their First Run.
I gave the apprentices their orders at dusk, but I write them here so my own shaking hands remember what duty requires.
Under the Zenith Moon, the Mother grants a mercy that borders on cruelty: Her light numbs the agony of the bone-break. Spared the tearing pain of their first shift, the young wolves do not know fear. They run in pure, wild euphoria. They push their limbs until their lungs whistle and their marrow freezes, blind to the teeth of the mountain.
They will tumble down the banks to the river before dawn—naked, shivering, human again, and hollowed out by the sudden return of the cold.
My own daughter is among them. My Snow Bird, whose first breath took ten barren winters of weeping at the stone. Seraph claws at the inside of my ribs, screaming at me to leave the iron pots, to sprint up the frost-crags and drag Aderyn back beneath my own skin.
A head healer cannot leave her post. If I cannot be the hands that catch her, I must trust that the healers I forged will not fail my child.
The Three Holds must be kept without fail:
The Sheathing: Wool to the throat before their feet touch the river gravel. Wrap them in heavy, grease-cured sheepskins to trap the core heat before the polar draft seizes their chests.
The First Draught: Two fingers of roasted marrow broth, boiled dark with dried winterberry and bitterroot. Hold the horn to their lips. Force the steam into their lungs so the heat wakes their blood from the inside out.
The Grounding: If the wild high lingers and their eyes remain wide, terrified, and lost to the beast, do not speak. Do not shake them. Sit flat upon the frozen loam, wrap bare arms around their shivering shoulders—skin-to-skin—and pull their spine flush against your sternum. Anchor their wild, hammering pulse to a steady, seasoned heartbeat until their humanity returns.
No elder asks for tallies of the hunt. No warrior demands to know who led the pack across the ridge. Pack law holds until every runner is released from the Watch.
Let the hold roar for the runners. We answer to the frost.
May the Mother guide whoever holds my daughter when the fever breaks.
