Chapter 1: Tokyo's Silence
Flashes engulfed the press room. Journalists from around the globe pressed forward, buzzing with curiosity about the newest signing for Japan’s own Sawada Racing Engineering. A young driver entering motorsport’s premier class had just inked a deal with the freshly minted, all-Japanese grid entrant. Felipe crossed the room, raising his left hand to shield his eyes from the blinding glare, peering through the slight gap between his fingers at the sea of reporters. The commotion around him gradually dissolved into background noise in his mind.
Their voices overlapped: “Felipe, what are your expectations for this season with the new team?” “Do you feel ready to return to Japan?” “Can Sawada deliver a car capable of challenging Kingsley?”
It was a barrage of questions within a space that, despite being crowded to capacity, felt intensely cold to him.
Escaping the press room at last, Felipe slid into the back seat of the team car. The interior was dimly lit. He loosened his tie slightly, clutching the signed team contract in his hands.
A light drizzle began to patter against the windowpane. Amid the quiet atmosphere, Ken’ichirō Sawada opened the door and took his place in the front passenger seat. Turning slightly, he asked: “Ready to go back to Japan, Felipe?”
“Without a doubt, Ken’ichirō. I’ve never felt better,” Felipe replied with a modest smile, looking away from the document for a moment. He turned his attention back to the window, where the rain was growing heavier.
As the car made its way toward the airport, Ken’ichirō spoke again: “Felipe, I need you in top form… we… all of us need you.”
“I appreciate your concern, and your trust, Ken’ichirō. But everything is moving so fast.”
“We’ll have time to rest, don’t worry. You can count on all of us, alright?”
“O-of course. Trust… we’re a team, we’re united.” Felipe shifted his gaze from the window to the road ahead. The wipers swept steadily across the windshield against the oncoming headlights, cutting through the dark, rain-soaked night.
Later, at the departure gate, Felipe stood motionless, lost in his thoughts and the ambient echo of the airport terminal. Ken’ichirō approached him, pulling up his own carry-on luggage. Slightly shorter in stature than Felipe, with graying hair and an impeccable posture, the team principal spoke softly: “I used to get anxious too, back when I was behind the wheel.”
“The sheer volume of information today is different...” Felipe murmured, his eyes fixed on the distance.
“Still refusing to use social media?”
“Definitively. I don’t miss a thing from the outside world.”
“Felipe, if you genuinely feel better off without it, then I ask that you keep it that way.”
“Absolutely. Ken’ichirō, you might be the person who understands me best in this entire motorsport world.”
Ken’ichirō looked at the young driver beside him.
“I’m grateful to have you as my chief, and I know I can consider you a friend,” Felipe added.
“Thank you for the kind words. And how are things with Kaito?”
“Honestly? I can’t see him as anything other than a rival. But I promised I’ll comply with team orders,” Felipe said as they walked toward the boarding jetway.
“You see him as a promising young rival whom you feel obligated to outperform. Meanwhile, he looks at you the exact same way—the only difference is he believes he still has something to learn from you. You two aren’t as different as you think.”
“Perhaps you’re right.”
As they stepped onto the boarding bridge before entering the aircraft, Ken’ichirō turned to ask: “Is your stomach holding up for the flight?”
“Yes, yes. I’m fine, you don’t need to worry so much about me,” Felipe replied, a slight smirk playing at the corner of his mouth as they took their first-class seats.
Felipe settled into his private suite as rain streaked across the plane’s window. Slipping on his headphones, he leaned his head back against the seat, though his feet remained restless—his right foot tapping instinctively.
After a few minutes, the captain announced the flight path: a direct, long-haul route from England to Japan.
Felipe rubbed his face with both hands during the flight crew’s announcements and the safety video playing on the monitor in front of him, fighting off a mild wave of nausea.
Hours into the journey, Felipe flipped through images of his hometown and reviewed technical data from rival teams’ vehicle reveals. The flight passed in a blur of brief, fitful naps until he finally fell into a deep sleep.
When they arrived at their destination, Ken’ichirō gently woke him, resting a hand on his shoulder. “Wake up. We’re here.”
Felipe pulled off his sleep mask abruptly, somewhat startled, and waited for the rest of the crew to disembark first. One of the team members chuckled: “You didn’t even feel us land.”
“I really slept too much this time...”
Felipe turned to the side, resting his right hand under his chin as he looked out at the Japanese horizon. The barren trees of a harsh February winter stirred quiet memories in his mind.
A few minutes later, he left the aircraft pulling his rolling carry-on. Felipe and Ken’ichirō made their way down to the Narita airport underground train station. Turning to Ken’ichirō, Felipe hesitated as he put on his heavy winter coat: “I’m sorry, but... I’d prefer to head to Tokyo on my own on this next train...”
Before he could elaborate, Ken’ichirō cut in gently: “Of course, of course. Don’t worry, I understand. Go ahead.”
Felipe walked over to the ticket vending machine, purchased a Suica Card with yen, and headed down to the platform with his suitcase to await the next train.
Kaito Morishita walked up to Ken’ichirō, watching Felipe step onto the JR Narita Express platform. “Is he heading to Tokyo alone?”
“Yes. I’ll let him travel on his own for today. I believe this homecoming will do him good.”
Felipe waited on the platform, far from his teammates. Station staff announced the train’s arrival over the loudspeakers. A few bystanders glanced at him out of the corner of their eyes. Drops of condensation fell steadily from the overhead N’EX signage.
Boarding the train, he settled into a comfortable seat and awaited departure. Glancing at his watch, the train smoothly pulled away at the exact scheduled second.
“A long seventy-minute ride ahead...” he muttered to himself. He opened his personal briefcase and looked through childhood photographs from the city where he was born.
As the train glided past suburban towns and sleeping rice fields, a sense of calm settled over him. Leaning back against the seat, he stared out at the landscape that had always captivated him. Even with the trees stripped bare by winter, there was a profound beauty to the countryside.
The travel time passed quickly, and soon the arrival at Shinjuku Station was announced. Felipe stepped off into the cavernous expanse of Shinjuku. Navigating one of the world’s busiest railway hubs, he read the signs and oriented himself with ease. Following the directions toward the East Exit, the sensory reality of Tokyo met his eyes for the first time in years—a bustling cityscape that somehow felt like a quiet hum.
Stepping out of the station into the open air, he took in the familiar streets of Shinjuku. Memories flooded back as commuters brushed past his shoulders.
“Tokyo... still as vast as ever,” he murmured. A faint smile touched the corner of his lips as his cold winter breath drifted into the air.
