Summary

Kathia Sital is a High Priestess, a community builder, and the most patient woman in North Georgia — a title she earns daily. When she opens the Dark Moon covenstead to the Atlanta area, she expects the usual mix of sincere seekers, curious newcomers, and at least one person who thinks a coven is a cult. What she doesn't expect is a rival who keeps losing and absolutely refuses to accept it, a membership roster that's somehow bigger than a mid-size PTA, and the creeping realization that this old converted church might not be big enough to hold everything she's accidentally built. The Society of the Dark Moon is an ensemble comedy in the tradition of Parks and Recreation and Abbott Elementary — warm, chaotic, and quietly sincere beneath all the robes and ritual candles. It's a story about the strange, scrappy communities that form around the places that will have you, and the people who hold those places together. Welcome to the Society. Kathia will take that basket, but please don't kneel.

Prologue

Prologue

After Kathia left Kajra’s earlier in the day, she drove to what looked like a former church building

quite a long way outside of Atlanta.

As she walked in, a young woman fell to her knees in front of her, holding up a basket of wine, incense, and homemade pastry items.

“Blessed be, High Priestess!” The woman said “It’s such a pleasure to finally be in your awe-inspiring presence!”

“YES MY CHILD!” Kathia said. “HUMBLE YOURSELF IN MY….Yeah, I’m joking. You can get up. This is a coven, lieverd, not a cult. And you can call me Kathia. I will definitely be taking that basket, however.”

“Oh, SHE EVEN SPEAKS THE ANCIENT TONGUE!” The woman said.

“Yes, the ancient tongue of Lilith, a figure from Jewish Folklore. Dutch,” Kathia said.

“THANK YOU FOR YOUR GRACIOUS ACCEPTANCE OF THIS MEAGER OFFERING, HIGH PRIESTESS!” the woman said.

“Yeah, you can still just call me Kathia….oh, never mind,” Kathia said.

“ALI!” a voice screamed from the crowd of people. “SHE’S NOT THE ONE WE’RE WORSHIPPING HERE!”

“TAYLA!” Kathia screamed back. “THIS ONE YOURS?”

Tayla Goodson emerged from the crowd.

“Yeah, sorry about that, Kat,” Tayla said. “I told her that this wasn’t that type of thing!”

“Well, at least the enthusiasm’s there!” Kathia said. “However misguided it may be. Maybe we can help with that. Is everything ready to go?”

“Everything’s good to go!” Tayla said.

Kathia walked up to the pulpit and tapped on the microphone.

“Blessed be, everyone,” Kathia said.

“Welcome to The Society of the Dark Moon.”
