THE SOVEREIGNS OF BLACK RIVER
Prologue
================================================================================
"The transition from man to monster does not begin with the lengthening of bone or the splitting of skin. It begins in the quiet of the mind, with a phantom scent of honey and ash that tastes like a death sentence."
--------
Aiel, the first Sovereign King of the Black River Lycans, died because his bed was empty. The grimoires stored in the lower septs of the granite keep called it the Sovereign's Curse - a biological design flaw hidden deep within the primary alpha lineage.
A king was not given the luxury of choice. When the bloodline reached its zenith, the Lycan's mind would fracture, carving a single, hyper-vivid image into the back of his eyelids. A fated mate. A phantom queen.
If she was not found, the mind would rot from the top down. Aiel had spent his final winters tearing at his own chest with calloused claws, weeping blood onto the stone floors because the empty space beside him in the dark was a vacuum that suffocated his beast. He didn't fall to a silver blade or a vampire's venom. He fell to the deadly silence of a woman who never crossed the water.
Now, his son wore the iron chain of the lineage.
Loial stood at the highest precipice of the western battlements, his heavy leather coat snapping against his thighs like a broken sail. Below him, the Black River thundered through the jagged throat of the canyon, a rushing artery of midnight glass and white foam that divided the ordered brutality of his pack from the wild, volatile magic of the Black Forest.
For ten years, his nights had been a blood-soaked theater. Every time his eyes closed, the storm in his mind cleared to reveal a single, recurring image: long, thick strands of silver-white hair flowing wildly like moonlight caught in briars, and a pair of wide, watchful emerald eyes that looked at him with an intoxicating mix of terror and absolute defiance. He didn't know her name. He didn't know the shape of her jaw. But his wolf knew the exact shape of her soul.
She was out there, hidden beneath the suffocating canopy of the cursed woods. And she was the match that would either purify his lineage or burn his kingdom to the ground.
"The pack is waiting, My King," Vane's flat, mechanical voice drifted through the freezing rain behind him. The Pack Guardian stood like a monument of dark iron, his amber eyes fixed on the distant tree line where the purple embers of old witch-wards flickered like dying stars.
"Gunnar has called a council of the lower septs. They smell the restlessness in your blood, Loial. They know the Sovereign's madness is beginning to take its toll."
Loial didn't turn around. He bared his fangs, a low, territorial rumble vibrating deep within his chest as the scent of wild aconite and sweet honey drifted across the chasm, cutting through the smell of wet stone and leather.
"Let them whisper," Loial rasped, his voice sounding like grinding stones.
"Let them tally the laws of dead grandfathers. My father died a slave to his dreams, Vane. But I have already died a thousand times in my sleep just to touch her skin. Tonight, I cross the threshold. If the forest will not yield her to my nightmares, then I will carve her out of its heart."
Across the water, deep within a clearing where the trees shifted and the roots bled, Shevva dragged an obsidian blade across her pale palm, her blood anchoring the defense lines of a coven that had spent a generation preparing for the wolf's hunger.
She did not know the king was coming. She did not know her freedom had already been forfeited to an ancient law. But as the first drop of her blood hit the moss, the earth groaned. The sky over the Black River fractured into an expanse of violet lightning.
The hunt had officially begun.
