Summary

BUMPY RIDERS In 1880, four childhood friends return to their hometown of Wilfredhill after years of trying—and failing—to make something of themselves. Colt Mercer, Hank Rourke, Silas Boone, and Jesse Crowe once promised each other that they would leave town, achieve their dreams, and return as successful men. Instead, life takes them down four different roads, and one by one, they find themselves back where they started. The people of Wilfredhill jokingly call them the Bumpy Riders—four men whose lives have been anything but smooth. But Wilfredhill has changed. Sheriff Samuel Whitlock has turned the town into his own territory, using his badge to control the people, steal land, and silence anyone who dares to oppose him. When the four friends discover that their families and their old home are in danger, they put their failures aside and stand together once again. What begins as a fight to protect their hometown soon leads them into a dangerous world of outlaws, betrayal, violence, and secrets buried deep in Wilfredhill's past. For the first time in years, the four friends have something worth fighting for. Their home. Their people. Their second chance. And they will have to ride together to protect it.

CHAPTER 1 — COLT MERCER

The road to Wilfredhill was dry and quiet.

Colt Mercer rode alone beneath the afternoon sun, his old brown hat pulled low over his eyes. Dust covered his boots, his coat, and the side of his horse.

He had been riding for three days.

For twelve years, he had stayed away from Wilfredhill.

Now he was going home.

Colt could see the town in the distance.

A few wooden buildings stood along the main street. Smoke rose from a chimney near the saloon, and horses were tied outside the general store.

It looked almost the same.

Almost.

Colt slowed his horse as he reached the old wooden sign.

WILFREDHILL

He stared at it.

A memory came back.

Four boys beneath an old oak tree.

Four boys making a promise.

They would leave Wilfredhill.

They would make something of themselves.

And one day, they would return together.

Colt had been the first to leave.

He had also been the first to break the promise.

Not because he wanted to.

Life simply had other plans.

He looked down at himself.

His coat was worn.

His boots were old.

His saddlebag contained a few clothes, some ammunition, and a small amount of money.

Nothing about him looked successful.

Colt gave a quiet laugh.

“So much for the great return.”

He kicked his horse forward.

The horse carried him into town.

People looked at him as he passed.

Some recognized him.

Others only saw another tired traveler.

Colt stopped outside the general store.

Before he could dismount, a young woman walked out carrying a wooden box.

She looked at him carefully.

“You lost?”

Colt shook his head.

“No.”

“Passing through?”

“No.”

She waited.

Colt removed his hat.

“I grew up here.”

The woman's expression changed slightly.

“You did?”

“Long time ago.”

Before she could say anything else, an older man stepped out of the store.

He was tall, thin, and gray-haired, with a wooden walking stick in one hand.

He looked at Colt.

Then looked again.

His eyes widened.

“Colt Mercer?”

Colt turned.

“Thomas Dawson.”

The old man smiled.

“Good Lord.”

He walked closer.

“I thought I'd never see you again.”

“Neither did I.”

Thomas looked him over.

“You've changed.”

“So have you.”

Thomas laughed.

“I suppose twelve years will do that.”

The young woman placed the box on the ground.

“Father, you know him?”

Thomas nodded.

“This is Colt Mercer.”

He looked at Colt.

“You remember my daughter, Clara?”

Colt shook his head.

“I don't think I've met her.”

“You haven't. She was a child when you left.”

Clara looked at Colt.

“Father has told me stories about you.”

Colt smiled.

“I hope they're not all true.”

“Most of them are.”

Colt laughed.

For a moment, Wilfredhill felt like home again.

Then he noticed something.

The street was unusually quiet.

Several buildings looked abandoned.

A family was loading furniture onto a wagon.

Two deputies stood outside the sheriff's office.

Colt's smile disappeared.

“What happened here?”

Thomas looked away.

Clara became quiet.

Colt noticed.

“Thomas?”

The old man sighed.

“Come inside.”

They entered the store.

Thomas closed the door.

Colt leaned against the counter.

“Tell me.”

Thomas looked at him.

“Sheriff Samuel Whitlock.”

Colt frowned.

“Who?”

“He wasn't sheriff when you left.”

Thomas paused.

“He became one after you boys were gone.”

“And?”

“He changed this town.”

Thomas explained everything.

Whitlock had started by buying land.

Then he began taking land from people who could not pay their debts.

When people refused to sell, he found other ways to pressure them.

Some families left.

Some lost everything.

Some simply stopped fighting.

Colt listened silently.

“What about the Mercer property?”

Thomas hesitated.

Colt immediately noticed.

“What happened to my family's land?”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Whitlock took it.”

Colt's jaw tightened.

“On what grounds?”

“Debt.”

“My family had no debt.”

“I know.”

“Then he stole it.”

Thomas didn't answer.

Colt looked toward the window.

“Where is he?”

“Sheriff's office.”

Colt started toward the door.

Thomas grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

Colt stopped.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“No, Colt.”

Thomas's voice became serious.

“You've been gone for twelve years. You don't know what this man is capable of.”

Colt looked at him.

“Then tell me.”

Thomas released his arm.

“He owns half the town.”

“And the other half?”

“Afraid of him.”

Colt looked through the window.

Across the street, a tall man wearing a black hat stepped out of the sheriff's office.

He wore a silver badge on his chest.

Sheriff Samuel Whitlock.

He looked across the street.

His eyes met Colt's.

Neither man moved.

Whitlock slowly smiled.

Then he walked back inside.

Clara came beside Colt.

“That was him.”

“I know.”

“You should leave.”

Colt looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because people who challenge Sheriff Whitlock usually regret it.”

Colt looked back at the sheriff's office.

“I didn't come back to challenge him.”

“Then why did you come back?”

Colt didn't answer immediately.

He looked toward the distant hills.

His family's old land was somewhere beyond them.

“I wanted to see home.”

Clara's expression softened.

“And now?”

Colt put his hat back on.

“Now I want to see what he took from me.”

Thomas shook his head.

“You're going to get yourself killed.”

“Maybe.”

Colt stepped outside.

He climbed onto his horse.

Before riding away, he looked at Thomas.

“Do you know where Hank is?”

Thomas was silent.

Colt understood.

“He came back?”

“Not yet.”

“What about Silas?”

Thomas shook his head.

“And Jesse?”

“Nothing.”

Colt looked down the road.

The four boys who had once promised to return together were scattered across the country.

Maybe they had forgotten the promise.

Maybe they were ashamed.

Maybe they simply didn't care anymore.

Colt didn't know.

But he knew one thing.

He was going to find them.

He kicked his horse forward.

As Colt rode toward the northern edge of town, Clara watched him disappear into the dust.

Thomas stood beside her.

“You think he'll bring the others back?”

Clara asked.

Thomas looked toward the road.

“I don't know.”

He paused.

“But if Colt Mercer has truly returned…”

He looked toward the sheriff's office.

“…Wilfredhill is about to change again.”

Far away, Colt continued riding toward the land that had once belonged to his family.

He had returned to Wilfredhill with almost nothing.

But he had one thing left.

A promise.

And this time, he wasn't sure whether he would keep it alone.
