Chapter 1
Tav’ar POV
The tall, extensive arched window dominated the high walls of my study, letting in the bleak sunlight that filtered through the overcast sky.
The vast expanse of my estate stretched out before me; the thick evergreen forest sweeping across the land until it met the snow topped mountain ranges.
I slowly sipped at the spicy, amber liquid that filled my glass, my throat welcoming the burning sensation.
My ears picked up the purr of an engine in the distance.
Who could that be?
I sifted through my mind trying to think if Saltos told me I had any appointments today but came up blank.
“Saltos,” I called softly my voice a soft whisper but firm.
I felt a soft gust of wind and I didn't need to turn my head to know my loyal guard was standing there.
“Who is that in my compound? I don't recall any visitor coming today?” I asked, irritation slightly edged in my voice as I hated surprises.
“It's Malachi,” he answered calmly.
I almost dropped the glass in my hand.
“Why wasn't I made aware of this?” I asked my voice a harsh whisper.
“He just showed up at the gate sire, and Duol recognized him and called me to confirm his entry,” he answered calmly, not at all shocked by my response.
“It’s been two hundred years since I sent him on that mission in the Congo Basin, I assumed he was dead after five years of no letters or calls.”
Did he find what I sent him looking for?
“So did we sire, so did we.”
I tipped the glass back, pouring all the contents down my throat and swallowing.
I turned to him, his face emotionless and calm.
“Well have Annelise prepare a welcoming dinner for him and send him right to my study. Gather everyone, I have a feeling we are about to be celebrating “ I said calmly, my mood improved and elated.
Two thousand years ago
Screams, cries, groans and shouts filled my ears as the Nightwalkers ravaged our village. Most of my people had been killed, and their empty corpses discarded on the ground like banana peels.
The grass thatched huts blazed under the blue black night sky as the rancid smell of burnt flesh filled the night air.
Hot tears, from the rage within me and irritation from the ungodly smoke, streamed down my face.
My entire village had been massacred.
All because I refused to sign my soul away to that monster and help him cause more destruction.
This was my punishment.
If a family had a daughter born with a rare trait, the ability to summon shadow creatures and travel in the abyss she was destined to belong to one of them.
A bad turn at destiny that made them mates.
It didn't matter if the family hid those daughters, the Nightwalker fated to be with that woman always found them.
Always!
