Chapter 1
We meet her at 38, married for 18 years. She waits for her husband to come home. His behavior has been changing, but she's spent years convincing herself everything is fine.
She receives the message from her best friend: “We need to talk. I'm sorry.”
She looks at her husband when he walks through the door and asks:
“Is it her?”
Cut to black.
He finally admits the affair. But the betrayal is worse than she imagined—this isn't some stranger. It's the woman who knew everything about their marriage.
We flash back to how they became best friends and how she trusted her completely.
Her husband says, “I think I love her.”
She looks back at the eighteen years of her marriage and realizes how much of herself she sacrificed trying to keep him happy. We see the little things she gave up—friends, dreams, opportunities, pieces of her personality.
She begins asking herself:
“When did being his wife become my entire identity?”
She takes off her wedding ring.
The divorce is final. At 38, she's terrified of starting over. She doesn't know who she is without being someone's wife.
She starts rebuilding—new routines, new friendships, rediscovering old passions.
Then she meets him.
He's kind. Patient. He doesn't push.
And that scares her.
He tells her, “You don't have to earn my love.”
She doesn't know how to respond.
Her new relationship begins. For the first time, someone treats her the way she always wished she'd been treated. But she can't trust it.
When he doesn't text back for several hours, her old fears immediately return.
She starts pulling away.
He asks,
“Are you afraid I'm going to hurt you… or are you afraid I won't?”
