Summary

Tobias Knight belongs to Mallory Black. Not only on his knees. Not only in her bedroom. Not only when the collar is around his throat. After months of discipline, punishment, pleasure, and devotion, Tobias has finally accepted what he once feared most: he wants to be owned. Completely. But belonging to Mallory does not mean disappearing. And when a high-profile case drags him back into the ruthless world of power, control, and public judgment, Tobias is forced to face the one question submission alone cannot answer. Can he be her pet and still remain himself? As the case consumes his days and tests every rule Mallory has written into his life, Tobias must learn that ownership is not escape. It is not hiding. It is not becoming smaller so someone else can hold him. Mallory does not want the broken pieces of him. She wants all of him. The lawyer. The pet. The pride. The fear. The need. The brilliance. The guilt. And when the case finally ends, Tobias will discover what it means to be taken apart by the only woman strong enough to keep every piece. Terms of Possession is the final book in A Study in Surrender, a dark BDSM romance about ownership, identity, power, pleasure, and the dangerous beauty of being completely kept.

Chapter OneTobias

The bracelet was still there.

I knew it before I opened my eyes.

It rested against my wrist beneath the edge of the weighted blanket, small and dark and permanent enough to make the room feel different. Not louder. Not softer.

Claimed.

The word came before I could stop it.

I opened my eyes and stared at the silver tag.

Kept.

My chest tightened.

Last night, I had been too drained to understand the full weight of it. The milking session had emptied me past thought, and Mallory’s hands had placed the bracelet around my wrist like an answer I had no strength left to argue with.

This morning, the answer remained.

So did the fear.

Above me, Mallory shifted.

“Awake.”

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Do not touch it.”

My fingers froze where they had started to move toward the tag.

I had not even noticed.

My face heated. “Yes, Miss Black.”

“Up. Kneel.”

I pushed the weighted blanket aside and rose carefully, settling on my knees at the foot of her bed. The collar was still around my throat. The bracelet was still around my wrist. Both felt heavier in the daylight.

Mallory sat up slowly, dark hair loose over one shoulder, black silk robe falling open enough to show skin, but her face was not soft.

Not this morning.

This morning, she looked like she had been waiting for me to wake so she could tell me exactly what last night had changed.

“Emotion,” she said.

“Overwhelmed.”

“And?”

“Afraid.”

“Of?”

I looked at the bracelet.

“Being more yours than I know how to be.”

Her eyes sharpened.

“There.”

The word landed hard.

She got out of bed and came to stand in front of me. I kept my hands open on my thighs. My right hand wanted to curl toward the bracelet again. I fought it.

Mallory saw.

“Good. You are learning what wants to hide.”

“Yes, Miss Black.”

She touched the tag on my wrist with one finger.

“This bracelet means I have claimed you.”

My breath stopped.

“It does not mean you are finished. It does not mean you are safe from correction. It does not mean the rules become gentler because you cried beautifully when I gave it to you.”

Heat moved up my neck.

“No, Miss Black.”

“It means you are deeper in my claim now.”

The words went through me slowly, then all at once.

Deeper.

Not safer.

Not looser.

Deeper.

“And because you are deeper,” she said, “your terms change.”

My stomach tightened.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

She stepped back and pointed toward the floor.

“Stay there. Hands open. Eyes on me.”

I obeyed.

Mallory went to the dresser and picked up the black folder I had seen last night. Beside it sat the collar box. My old fear moved under my ribs at the sight of both together.

She opened the folder.

“These are not suggestions. They are not negotiations. You may question for clarity when permitted, but you do not debate the shape of my claim.”

My hands twitched.

“Open.”

I flattened them.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term one. The bracelet remains on at all times unless I remove it, safety requires it, or I decide otherwise. You do not touch it for comfort. You do not twist it when nervous. You do not use it as proof instead of using words.”

My throat tightened.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term two. Inside this house, your body is mine to place. You do not sit on furniture unless instructed or permitted. Your default place is kneeling, standing where I put you, or at the foot of my bed.”

The room seemed to narrow.

Not because I disliked it.

Because I wanted it too much.

Mallory noticed.

“Words.”

“I want that.”

“And?”

“I’m embarrassed by how much.”

“Good. Term three. Unless guests are present or I instruct otherwise, you are shirtless inside my house. Soft pants only. No work armor in my space after I have removed it from you.”

My breath caught.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term four. Your phone belongs to permission under this roof. Work emergencies are handled properly, but you do not reach for connection, distraction, control, or reassurance without asking.”

My face warmed because she knew exactly where that rule came from.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term five. Every morning, before work, you kneel for inspection. Collar, bracelet, body, mood, hands, eyes. If your body carries soreness from punishment, training, or pleasure, you report it. If your emotions are already trying to hide, you report that too.”

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term six. Workday chastity remains, and it is no longer experimental. It is part of how I keep you contained outside my house.”

My pulse kicked.

She paused.

“Color?”

“None.”

“Emotion?”

“Owned.”

Her mouth softened faintly. “Correct.”

The word hit so deeply I had to force myself not to lower my head.

“Eyes,” she reminded.

I lifted them again.

“Term seven. At work, you are still mine, but you are not useless. You will not use my claim as an excuse to shrink from responsibility. You will work well because my pet is not sloppy in the world.”

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term eight. When you return, you kneel at the entry before you receive the collar. Bag, phone, keys, shoes, jacket, tie, report. Nothing skipped. Nothing rushed. If you come home carrying fear, resentment, or need, it comes out before the collar goes on.”

That one hurt.

“No collar until after report?”

“Not always.”

My chest tightened.

She watched me absorb it.

“The collar is not a gag for your truth, Tobias. If you need leather before honesty, then leather has become hiding.”

My throat worked.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term nine. During scenes, eyes open unless I allow them closed. Hands open unless I bind them or instruct otherwise. Breaking either rule is no longer a small correction. It is punishment.”

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term ten. Punishment will become harsher when the mistake is repeated.”

My breath caught.

Mallory’s gaze did not move.

“You are claimed now. I will not keep reteaching lessons gently because fear prefers familiar doors.”

A shiver moved through me.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term eleven. Pleasure is not owed for obedience. Pleasure is not proof. If you turn reward into currency, I will remove it until your body remembers who decides.”

My hands pressed harder against my thighs.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term twelve. You may ask for reassurance once. Clearly. If you circle it, provoke it, perform for it, or try to extract it through suffering, I will treat that as manipulation.”

That word still hurt.

It should.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term thirteen. The house across the street is not your home. You do not enter it without permission. You do not look to it when afraid. You do not imagine it as punishment unless I make it one.”

My eyes burned.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term fourteen. You will keep a nightly log. One need. One resentment. One fear. One truth. If you write what you think I want instead of what is real, you will rewrite it on your knees.”

I swallowed.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Term fifteen.”

Her voice lowered.

My whole body went still.

“When I say you are mine, you answer without hesitation.”

My breath shook.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“No. That is not the answer.”

The room went silent.

Mallory stepped closer.

“You answer, ‘Completely.’”

My throat tightened so hard it almost hurt.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

Her eyes held mine.

“You are mine.”

“Completely,” I whispered.

“Again.”

“Completely.”

“Again.”

My voice shook.

“Completely.”

Her expression warmed by the smallest, most devastating degree.

“Good pet.”

The praise cracked through me.

Not soft.

Not soothing.

Claiming.

She closed the folder and set it on the bed.

“Do you accept these terms?”

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Do you consent?”

I breathed once, searching beneath the fear, beneath the heat, beneath the terrifying relief of having fewer places to hide.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Do you want them?”

That question undid me more than the rest.

Because yes felt too large.

Yes meant I wanted harsher. Deeper. Stricter. I wanted the way her claim removed choices I used to hurt myself with. I wanted the rules that made me more obviously hers. I wanted the inspections, the kneeling, the permission, the shirtless vulnerability, the reports before the collar, the answer I had to give when she said mine.

I wanted all of it.

“Yes,” I said, voice rough. “I want them.”

Mallory touched my bracelet.

“Then this morning you begin.”

My pulse jumped.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Stand.”

I rose carefully.

“Remove your shirt.”

I froze.

I was already in sleep pants and a T-shirt from the night before, soft and plain, something she had allowed after the final scene because my body had needed warmth.

Now her eyes rested on it like it did not belong.

Because under the new terms, it didn’t.

I pulled it over my head and folded it over my arm.

“Where does that go?”

“Laundry, Miss Black.”

“Later. For now, place it on the chair.”

I obeyed.

The air touched my chest, and the morning suddenly felt sharper. This was not a scene. Not the pain room. Not the pleasure room. No restraints. No tools.

Just her house.

Her terms.

My body under them.

Mallory’s gaze moved down me, clinical and possessive at once.

“Inspection.”

My mouth went dry.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

She checked the collar first. Two fingers beneath the leather. Then the bracelet, turning my wrist to inspect the fit. Then my hands.

“Open.”

They already were, but I opened them wider.

“Eyes.”

I kept them on her.

“Body?”

“Sore from last night. Drained. No bad pain.”

“Emotion?”

I swallowed.

“Exposed.”

“And?”

“More yours.”

Her hand paused at my wrist.

“Yes.”

The word settled over me like a lock.

Then she stepped back.

“Bathroom. Bed. Breakfast. You will remain shirtless. You will not touch the bracelet. You will ask before sitting anywhere except the floor. If you forget, the first punishment under the new terms happens before coffee.”

My face heated.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“And Tobias?”

I looked at her.

“You will fail.”

The words struck.

She did not soften them.

“When you do, I will correct you. That is not the claim weakening. That is the claim doing what it was made to do.”

My eyes burned.

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“Say it.”

“When I fail, the claim is not weakening.”

“And?”

“The correction is part of being kept.”

“Good.”

The morning became difficult immediately.

I almost sat on the edge of the bed to put away the weighted blanket.

Almost.

Mallory said nothing.

I caught myself halfway down and froze.

Heat rushed into my face.

Her eyebrow lifted.

“What did you almost do?”

“Sat without permission.”

“Why?”

“Habit.”

“And what do you do now?”

“Ask or kneel.”

“Choose.”

I lowered to my knees.

“Good.”

No punishment.

Not yet.

Just the first edge of the new life pressing into me.

In the bathroom, I reached toward the bracelet when the silver tag clicked softly against the sink.

Stopped.

Hands open.

Breathed.

In the bedroom, I made the bed shirtless, feeling every brush of fabric against skin that still remembered last night, feeling Mallory’s eyes on my back, feeling the absence of casual privacy.

At breakfast, I stood beside the chair until she looked at me.

“What do you ask?”

“May I sit, Miss Black?”

“You may.”

I sat carefully.

That simple permission went through me with embarrassing force.

Mallory saw.

She always saw.

“Good pet.”

I closed my eyes.

Her fork touched the plate.

My eyes opened immediately.

Too late?

I did not know.

Mallory watched me.

“What did you do?”

“I closed my eyes.”

“Why?”

“Praise.”

“And?”

“Feeling too much.”

“Is this a scene?”

“No, Miss Black.”

“Then no punishment. But you will say the correction.”

I breathed in.

“I do not hide from praise.”

“Again.”

“I do not hide from praise.”

“Good. Eat.”

By the time breakfast ended, I understood.

These terms were not decorative.

They were not a list to admire and place in the collar box.

They were going to live in the house. In breakfast. In laundry. In where I sat, what I wore, how I asked, what my hands did before my mouth caught up.

Mallory had not claimed me to make me comfortable.

She had claimed me to take me deeper.

After breakfast, she handed me the folder.

“You will copy the terms in your own handwriting.”

“Yes, Miss Black.”

“On your knees.”

My breath caught.

Her eyes darkened.

“There it is.”

I lowered myself to the floor at the low table, shirtless, collared, bracelet visible, pen in hand.

The first line shook.

I am deeper in her claim now.

Mallory stood above me.

“Again,” she said.

I looked up.

“That line is not a term. It is a truth. Write it cleanly.”

My throat tightened.

I tore the page free.

Started again.

This time, my hand steadied.

I am deeper in her claim now.

The bracelet stays.

My body is hers to place.

My default is kneeling unless permitted otherwise.

I do not use the bracelet as proof.

I report before I hide.

I answer “Completely” when she says I am hers.

By the time I finished, my knees ached and my chest felt too full to breathe around.

Mallory took the page, read it once, and placed it in the collar box.

Then she touched the bracelet.

“You are mine.”

I looked up at her.

No hesitation.

“Completely.”

Her hand slid into my hair.

“Good pet.”

And just like that, the first morning under the deeper claim began with me on my knees, shirtless in her house, marked at the wrist, collared at the throat, and finally starting to understand that being kept had never meant being held gently.

It meant being held exactly where she wanted me.

Even when I shook.
