Girls love to have fun
I was halfway through my third outfit change when Kyle peeked into the bedroom.
“You look incredible, Amy.” His smile was easy, warm, his eyes taking me in with that soft attention he saves for people he loves. “Penelope’s going to love it.”
I turned back to the mirror. Lipstick a shade too bold. The neckline of my rose dress dipping lower than I usually let it. Or maybe not low enough for her. Hard to tell with my heart in my throat.
I forced a smile. “You think so?”
He nodded. “Yeah. She always says you clean up nice. Besides, you’re her favorite, aren’t you?”
My heartbeat skipped.
If he only knew.
I turned away before the heat in my neck gave me away.
That night on their boat returned in pieces, like light glancing off water.
The four of us together at first. Our husbands, Kyle and James, flushed from sun and rum, their jokes slurring until they finally retreated below.
Penelope stayed on deck with me, her green eyes catching mine with an inevitable gravity I felt deep in my ribs.
The silence stretched until I could hear my pulse and the soft slap of water against the hull.
Her hair brushed my cheek when she leaned in, that red flare catching the wind.
The warmth of her breath.
My chest lifted without meaning to.
A sweet ache climbing through me before her mouth even touched mine.
We didn’t speak. We just gave in to whatever had been simmering between us all night.
I was drunk, but I remember everything.
Her fingers threaded into my hair, drawing me closer.
Her mouth opened against mine like she’d been waiting for the chance.
And I didn’t hesitate. Not for a second.
My body answered hers before I could think.
Ever since that night, I kept my distance.
Stopped replying.
Turned down invites.
Stayed on dry land.
And she never pressed. She just sent check-ins, a heart, a quick “thinking of you,” enough to let me know she was still there if I wanted her.
Now she was having a baby.
A baby.
And I was going to her shower with a gift clutched in my hands, a tiny cotton dress covered in pale pink flowers, boxed and finished with a satin ribbon. A polite gesture from the good girl mask I kept dusting off. Not from the woman who had been naked with her on that rocking deck, my mouth moving over her like I was starving, learning her by taste and sound and the way she arched into my hands.
She looked radiant in the invitation photos: pregnancy glow, emerald eyes, her husband’s arm around her, both smiling like their life was falling into place.
The same man who had been passed out cold while I drew shivers from his wife with my fingers and tongue.
I hated how much I missed her.
Kyle crossed the room and brushed his lips against the side of my neck. Soft. Warm. Safe.
“You’re my favorite too,” he murmured.
I tried to smile at our reflection, but something in my chest tightened.
I wanted to love him better than this. Wanted the way he touched me to be enough. But all I could think about was another touch. A woman’s hands.
The way she gripped my hips that night while we lay naked on the deck, the wood still holding the sun’s warmth. Her mouth lowering to my breast, her lips parting against me with a patient hunger that left me helpless. When her tongue brushed my nipple, heat shot through me so fast I rose to meet her, my hand sinking into her hair, holding her there. Not rough. Just desperate enough to reveal how badly I’d wanted her.
“I have to go or I’ll be late,” I whispered, guilt clinging tighter than the silky dress.
I stepped back before he could see the flush crawling up my neck, before he could read anything in my face I wasn’t ready to explain.
My heels clicked too loudly on the hardwood as I crossed the room. Purse on my shoulder. Gift in my hands. Breath held. Every movement too quick, like I was trying to outrun what I’d just remembered.
“I’ll drive you,” Kyle said, grabbing his car keys.
“It’s fine,” I started, but he was already opening the door.
“You’ll want to drink,” he said, smiling. “It’s a party. Celebrate. I’ll pick you up after.”
My stomach tightened.
“Okay,” I managed..
We walked to his black SUV that always felt a little too large and too polished.
Kyle hummed along to the radio during the drive, tapping the steering wheel in a mindless rhythm. I watched houses blur by, imagining the version of me who hadn’t crossed that line on the boat.
The one who hadn’t wanted her.
The one who could drive to this shower thinking only of celebrating a pregnant friend, not of the dizzy pull in my throat at the thought of seeing her again.
“You’ve been weird about her lately,” Kyle said.
My voice thinned. “What?”
“Penelope. You used to talk about her all the time.” He shrugged. “Now you don’t even hang out with her.”
“She’s pregnant,” I said, too quickly. “That changes things.”
“Sure,” he said, though he didn’t sound convinced. “But you were close.”
I didn’t answer.
He pulled up beside her house, lights glowing through the trees.
“Tell Penelope I said congrats,” he said.
“Yeah,” I whispered, and stepped out.
Inside, the house was loud with laughter, heels clacking against tile, the sweet smell of lemon cake drifting on a warm draft. Women gathered around a mimosa bar, sundresses bright as flowers, conversations full of gossip I didn’t care to step into.
I hovered by the gift table, clutching my box like a shield.
To Penelope, with love. Sarah.
My eyes snagged on the name like a splinter.
Sarah who?
I pictured Penelope’s mouth on someone else’s skin. The way her hands would explore. Her thigh easing between legs that weren’t mine. The way her breath would stir another woman’s pulse.
I hated it.
A flash of her sister’s face caught me across the room, raised brows, half-smile, but no wave. We’d met once or twice. That was all.
I stood there too long, heat crawling up the back of my neck.
Then I heard her laugh.
And saw her.
Penelope moved through the crowd like she was floating, her hair loose down her back, her peach-colored dress clinging softly to the swell of her belly. Bare knees. Soft leather sandals with thin straps tied neatly around her ankles. Her lips flushed like she’d just finished a cold rosé.
She was stunning. And impossibly calm.
As if nothing had happened.
“Oh my god,” she said, already reaching for me. “You came!”
I smiled too fast. “Of course.”
She pulled me into a side hug, soft and careful. Her perfume wrapped around me. Gardenia and warm vanilla. The same scent that had stayed with me long after her mouth left mine.
My stomach tightened.
“You look amazing,” I said.
“You’re sweet,” she said, brushing a hand over her belly. “It’s mostly hormones and this bowling ball I’m smuggling.”
She laughed. Warm, easy.
I wanted to shake her and scream, Do you remember?
But I only said, “You’re glowing.”
She giggled, stroking her bump. “You’re just saying that because I’m huge and you’ve always been too nice to tell me the truth.”
“You’re so beautiful,” I blurted. Too fast. Too much. Heat crawled up my neck.
She tilted her head, smiled sideways. “And you look just as delicious as the last time I saw you.”
The air thinned.
Last time.
The deck.
Her skin.
Her mouth.
Before I could reply, her sister swooped in, plucking my gift from my hands, replacing it with a mimosa.
“Pen,” she said, “go sit. Time to gather! Let the queen open her loot!”
We shifted into place. Penelope eased onto the couch, her hands supporting the underside of her belly. She looked around the room like she couldn’t believe it was all for her.
Someone raised a glass. “To Penelope, may labor be short, and epidurals strong!”
Laughter rippled through the room. Glasses clinked.
Penelope smiled wide. “You guys are too good to me.”
The gifts came in a parade. Tiny blankets, tiny clothes, tiny toys. I smiled when everyone else did. Sipped my drink. Watched her.
The way she tucked her hair.
The way her fingers slid over the floral dress I’d given her.
The quick, deliberate glances she sent me.
An hour blurred by. Penelope made her way around the living room, her hand brushing each person’s arm as she thanked them on their way out. She looked tired, beautiful in that almost painful way people get when they’re one breath from collapsing but still pretending they’re fine.
I drifted toward the door, waiting for my moment to slip away.
Her sister swept past, juggling used cups in one hand and her phone in the other. “Pen, I need to go. My youngest has a fever and the sitter’s useless. Love you!”
She blew her a kiss across the room and slipped out before Penelope could answer.
The room emptied fast.
I should go too.
I lifted my purse higher on my shoulder. Took a breath. Stepped forward.
“Wait,” Penelope said behind me.
I froze.
Of course I did.
I turned.
She stood a few feet away, one hand braced on her lower back, exhaustion softening her smile.
“Would you mind staying a little?” she asked. “Help me clean up? I’m… kind of wiped.”
“Sure,” I said. “Of course.”
How could I say no?
The door clicked shut behind the last guest. The quiet settled in around us.
Penelope reached for a trash bag.
“No,” I said, taking it from her. “Sit. Rest. You’re carrying a human. I can handle it.”
She laughed as she lowered herself onto the couch. “You always were bossy.”
I cleaned. Pretended this was normal. Pretended I wasn’t replaying the memories from the boat in my head.
I gathered plates, napkins, and plastic flutes sticky with juice and champagne. Dumped what I could. Rinsed what I couldn’t. The cake sat half-eaten on its stand. I scraped the half into a container, snapped on the lid, and slid it into her fridge.
When I came back to the living room, Penelope was slouched into the corner of the couch, head tilted, hair spilling over her shoulder, eyes half-lidded.
I told myself not to stare, but stood there anyway, watching the slow rise and fall of her breathing.
“Thank you,” she murmured.
I swallowed. “It’s nothing.”
“It isn’t.” She looked at me, calm and sure. “You didn’t have to stay.”
“You asked,” I said.
She smiled softly. “Can I ask you for one more thing?”
I nodded.
She tipped her chin toward her feet. “Help me get these off? I can’t reach past my knees.”
I knelt before I realized I’d moved.
Her feet were warm when I touched her ankles. The straps had left pale dents in her skin. I loosened each knot, slips of leather falling away. She flexed her toes in relief.
“Better?” I asked.
She sighed. “So much.”
I stayed kneeling. Looking up.
Her gaze held mine, warm and amused, like she could feel exactly what she was doing to me.
She shifted, slowly exhaling as she settled back. Her dress slid higher along her thighs. Inch by inch. Until the small triangle of her red hair came into view, soft curls framing the tender pink of her sex, slightly swollen and glistening.
My eyes dropped before I could stop them. And flicked away too late.
“God,” she murmured, laughing under her breath. “Nobody tells you how feral your body gets at this stage.”
I swallowed hard.
“Hormones are a menace,” she said, her voice dipping into something warm and low. “I feel so horny all the time. Like I’m sixteen again.”
Her thighs eased wider.
Then her fingers slid down the hem of her dress, lifting it slowly. Deliberately. Exposing more of her curls, the soft folds beneath catching the light.
She looked at me with the murky, magnetic green of deep water, the kind that pulls you under before you realize you’ve swum too far.
“God,” she moaned. “I could really use your tongue right now.”
My face flushed hot. She was open in front of me, red hair highlighting the wet, flushed folds she wasn’t bothering to hide. My breath shook.
“Penelope…” I whispered, though I didn’t know if I meant stop or please.
She watched me. Her hips lifted in a quiet invitation.
My knees pressed into the carpet as I leaned in. Her scent met me halfway, warm skin, faint salt, and beneath it the deep, unmistakable heat of her arousal. It hit me low and lingered.
My hands trembled, but I lifted them and pressed my palms to her inner thighs. Her skin was warm, soft, welcoming. She relaxed instantly, opening for me.
I hesitated, too aware of myself, too aware of her, and sober in a way that made everything terrifyingly real.
Her fingers slipped into my hair, her thumb brushing the back of my neck.
“Don’t be nervous,” she whispered. “You already know how good you make me feel.”
My palms pressed harder without meaning to. Her hips answered with a small, offering lift.
One deep breath.
Her scent filling my lungs.
And I was lost.
I closed the distance fast, hunger stripping away every trace of restraint. My mouth met her heat and something inside me tightened. I dragged my tongue up her slit, slow at first, tasting her warmth, her salt, the slick sweetness waiting for me.
She gasped, her hips rising into my face.
“Yes,” she breathed. “Just like that.”
I circled her clit with my tongue, soft at first, then firmer. Her whole body shivered. The sounds she made were low and throaty and impossible to ignore.
“Oh… fuck,” she whimpered, thighs pressing around my head as I licked deeper. “That… God, that feels so good.”
Her hips rolled toward me, needy. “More,” she said, voice catching.
I slid one hand down and slipped two fingers inside her. Her moan broke open, long and trembling, her walls clenching around me, drawing me in.
Her hand knotted in my hair as my tongue worked her clit, circling, flicking, finding the rhythm that made her gasp, the one she pushed her hips into.
I thrust my fingers deeper, curling them up into that soft, swollen spot inside her. Her pussy tightened hard, each pulse a demand.
Her breathing quickened, eyes fluttering closed.
“Don’t… don’t you dare stop.”
I didn’t.
I added a third finger, easing it inside her and stretching her with every stroke. Her cry broke high in her throat as her hips jerked forward. Her clit fluttered against my tongue in frantic waves.
Her whole body arched. Her walls clamped around my fingers as her orgasm hit. I held her through it, my mouth soft and slow now, guiding her through each pulse as it crashed through her.
Gradually her thighs loosened. Her hips sank into the cushions. She let out a long, shaky breath.
She lay back panting, lips parted, skin glowing, hair damp against her temples. Her legs remained open, wet and gleaming.
When her gaze found me, her eyes were glassy, cheeks flushed.
“God,” she whispered, a smile tugging at her mouth. “You have no idea how much I needed that.”
I swallowed, my fingers still inside her, her silkiness contracting faintly around me in slow aftershocks. “I… I’m glad,” I said, barely audible.
I pulled my hand from her. She exhaled at the loss.
Something in me ached.
Not from desire.
From wanting her this much again, knowing exactly what it meant.
Penelope closed her eyes, a faint smile lingering on her lips. I stayed there on the floor, staring up at her, tasting her still on my breath, wondering how I was supposed to stand up, walk out of this room, and pretend I hadn’t just cheated on my husband again.
Kneeling there, her wetness cooling on my lips, I understood something I’d been trying not to admit.
This wasn’t a mistake I had made twice.
It was a mistake I knew I would make again.
