Silhouettes & Silence

Summary

Miles “Ghost” Rivera notices everything—the trembling hands before a show, the sadness hidden beneath laughter, the moments his bandmates need someone to lean on. But beneath Black Static’s roaring success, the quiet bassist has grown used to keeping his own needs out of sight. When the concert ends, he slips away, leaving the spotlight to everyone else. Until a camera shutter clicks in the rain. Photographer Sienna Cross captures the moment no one else sees: Miles walking alone after the applause has faded. Everyone else photographed the concert. She photographed the silence. What begins with a photograph becomes a connection neither expected. With Sienna, Miles finds someone who listens without rushing his pauses—and makes him want to share the things he usually keeps to himself. But being seen means letting someone close. As their connection deepens, Miles must decide whether the solitude he knows is worth more than the love he could have. Silence and Silhouettes is Book Five of Black Static—a tender, slow-burning romance about the man who notices everyone, and the woman who finally notices him.

Prelude

There was a strange kind of loneliness that came with being the one who noticed everything.

Miles Rivera had learned that long before anyone started calling him Ghost.

He noticed the little things. The way Knox’s fingers trembled before walking on stage. The way Layla tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear whenever she was nervous. The way Elias stared at empty piano keys long after the music had stopped. The way Jace laughed a little too loudly whenever something hurt. The way Axel hugged people just a little tighter when he thought they needed it.

Ghost carried those moments quietly, collecting them like songs no one else could hear. Someone had to. Someone had to remember who they were beneath the lights.

He never minded standing in the background.

The spotlight belonged to other people.

He was happier in the shadows. Or at least... That’s what he’d always told himself.

Tonight, another sold-out crowd screamed Black Static’s name. Thousands of voices. Thousands of lights. Thousands of strangers who knew every lyric but not a single person standing on the stage.

Ghost stood at the edge of the platform, his bass resting comfortably against him as Knox stepped toward the microphone.

The roar was deafening. He smiled. Not because of the applause.

Because Knox looked happy.

Layla glanced across the stage and laughed at something Jace said.

Elias closed his eyes before the first piano note. Axel spun a drumstick between his fingers with effortless confidence. Ghost watched them all. Making sure everyone was where they needed to be. Making sure everyone was okay.

The first note echoed through the arena.

The world erupted.

For two hours they belonged to everyone.

Then the lights went out.

The crowd disappeared.

The stage emptied.

As always, Ghost packed his bass before anyone else. He slipped out the back entrance while security dealt with the remaining fans.

The city greeted him with cool night air and rain-soaked streets.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

Home.

He pulled his hood over his head and started walking. No destination in mind.

Just away.

Away from the noise.

Away from the expectations.

Away from the version of himself the world thought it knew.

Somewhere behind him... A camera shutter clicked.

Ghost stopped.

He turned slowly toward the sound. Nothing. Just rain. Just silence. He frowned, glanced around once more, then continued walking into the night. High above the street, hidden behind the glow of a second-floor warehouse window... A young woman lowered her camera.

She looked down at the photograph she’d just taken.

A man walking alone beneath a city full of lights.

Everyone else had photographed the concert.

She had photographed the silence.

She smiled to herself. “I see you.”

Ghost never looked back. He had no idea someone had finally seen him.
